McSad?

There was a blurb in the Messenger a couple of weeks ago that McDonald's is considering shutting down its Decatur site for about three months in order to bulldoze the current one and build a nice new shiny McDonald's in its place. I was trying to remember when that place opened. 1980-ish? Don't know what we'll do without one of the fanciest places in town.

I would NOT bet the farm on this date however, I BELIEVE that particular Decatur McD's opened in 1988.

I know for certain it was at least 4 years earlier than that. my guess is '83.

Is that a knock on McDonalds or the town? You must be putting one of them down. It's what you do.

Anyhow, it was a hugely big deal when it first opened. Us kids were giddy ("SoftServ" ice cream for $.15!).

I think adults were a little giddy too if the truth be known, because it kind of signified that Decatur had grown up (our first real fast-food franchise!).

I was in line with a my sisters & cousins as the first people to order (although second to actually receive our food) when it opened, but I don't remember how old I was at the time. But hhl's guess sounds about right.

I hope when they re-open they get employees the will respect their customers.

83 to 84 sounds right

I remember a few kids in my class having birthday parties there and sitting on the saddle seats in the back. I would have been far too old for that in 1988. I'm guessing '83 / '84 also. It was a big freaking deal when it opened. Was around the same time Wal-Mart opened and killed Bridgeport for good.

'83 sounds about right, or maybe a smidge earlier -- I remember how excited everyone was, and how I could buy myself an ice cream with change I found in the couch. Big deal for a little kid.

Also, I had the best breakup line of my life there -- got dumped right before xmas, got in my car while he was still kind of talking, and said, "well, merry fucking christmas!" (he might not've heard me?) and peeled out. Beautiful peelout. Wish it was on purpose -- really, it was just that I couldn't drive all that well, and I came closer to stalling out than peeling out ... boy, was I glad when first gear finally engaged! Ahh, good times at McD's ...

I believe it was 83. I graduated in 1984. We crossed Sandy to come eat.

It had to be before 1984. That is the year I graduated. We would cross the Sandy and go eat at Mickey D's.

Ever since I watched 'Supersize Me', I will not eat anything at McDonalds, especially the chicken mcnuggets. All I see is that guy forcing the food down and getting sick.

I worked there for one month in 1980 and, at that time it had not been opened very long.

Maybe they should bulldoze and leave it be. It could become the new PIT. Then we could all make the lap and then park there and play are music real loud and do other important stuff.

1981 is the year

No some of the older good one's are going to be working at the McDonald's in Wal-Mart until the new one reopens.

When I was a little kid, I used to think the saddle seats were sooooo cool! I'm now wondering though, if they shut down for 3 months, where will I take my kids to get their nutritious meals?

Hell, buy 4 months worth of mcd's food in advance. It'll still have the same nutritional value and flavor.
