Let's see. Education is a problem. The government is the solver of all problems. So . . . . let's introduce legislation in Texas to make it a crime, punishable by a fine up to $500, for missing a Parent-Teacher conference.
At least that guy did.

Yes........let's see......so what happens if a parent IS a teacher and on the other side of the problem?
Cut rate perhaps on the fine?
Ah, the complications we have that result in laws we can't understand........
Another reason to homeschool
I wonder why liberals are against school vouchers? Oh yeah, I forgot. Because the teachers union is a big donor to the democratic party and vouchers would allow for competition. How would you like to be a teacher and schedule a meeting with parents(on your own time might I add) and the parents no show and don't even call.
Don't doctors still charge for an appointment if you don't call and cancel?
All I can say is, if this is true, he's an idiot--and I'm a Republican. I wish our Texas Legislature would meet only once in FOUR years, instead of two--that way they'd do less damage!
i've got a better idea. our state legislators are supposed to be our representatives, right? they should have a direct relationship with the people who have elected them, correct?
i propose we pass a constitutional amendment which states that we, as voters, citizens, and taxpayers, should be empowered to schedule conferences with these *sshats so that they can hear our views. sit across the table from us and listen to our concerns. and if they don't show up, they are charged with a class c misdemeanor.
further, three of such class c misdemeanors, and their driver's license is suspended (it's a right, not a privilege, correct?).
the fourth time, it's a state jail felony. the fifth time, its a regular felony. after that, death penalty, baby.
and no resignations allowed. you campaigned for this, you get a state paycheck on our dime, you get all the kickbacks, your brother-in-law gets the sweeet state contracts, SO you do the work -- or else!
now that's something i think the electorate can get behind. i'm circulating a freaking petition, pronto.
Homeschooling children to avoid talking to the teacher is a cop-out for the parent. A parent can make the public schools better by being involved and working with the teachers.
11:55, this is 11:08--Amen and LOL!
I don't think it will work but it is not a bad thought. Do you have any idea how hard it is to be teaching a class and a few kids ruin it for every student in the classroom. It is not fair to the kids who are remotely interested and may learn something. So you try and contact the parents in order to help the child and solve the problem then they don't care enought to even show up. It pisses me off and that is why our country will fail in years to follow. Not enough parents give a crap. It is across the board for all races and financial status'. The ones with the fancy cars and the three story houses don't show either.
People home school their kids to give them a better education and avoid the liberal agenda that government schools promote. It is not to avoid a simple parent teacher meeting. Look at the big picture.
Homeschool parents have problems with teachers too. Parents don't do all of the educating themselves, but have other homeschool parents do some of it.
Dealing with controversy isn't unique to the public schools. We are just more aware of it in the press.
Anon 12:03 I ask a lot of people I meet, why they home school? For a better education is rarely their answer. Most of the time it is for religious reasons in that they don't want their kids corrupted by the influence of other kids.
Why not take a look at what the Germans, Japanese, English (to an extent), and other countries do. After all, we get upset when our American graduates don't fair as well in math and science. Each of those countries has some degree of testing at about the 6th or 7th grade level. Those that qualify and are serious about learning move on to secondary, (prep) school and college. The others are channeled off to other schools for vocational training. Maybe thats why they beat our sox off when we compare. Gee, we are comparing our "educate the masses" to their "cream of the crop".
