anonymous #1: Would that be Babe's ???? Talk about good. The one in Sanger is excellent.

I am not sure it is permanently shut down, I think they finally had to change the grease for the FF's and CF's steaks. The original grease was only good for 10 years or 50,000 "grease cooks"!

Are you SURE Babe's Chicken Diner is coming to Decatur??? It's my hubby's favorite!

Anonymous said...

But we have Chili's now!

I had to force myself to type that out. I cannot believe that that place has a full parking lot everytime I've been past it.

Anonymous said...

Oh com'on...we'll NEVER see a Hooter's on our town square!!

Anonymous said...

I've seen hooters on the town square, though.

Anonymous said...

Hooters.....which town square? In Texas??

Anonymous said...

LOL...duh!! "REAL" hooter's on the square! Lotta hot women working around our square!!

You people are so bright.

It's not mysterious. They've been announcing it for a week. The Babe's deal isn't a rumor but it's not a done deal either.

Anonymous said...

and it's paid for.

Anonymous said...

I'll tell ya one damn thing, we NEED more parking space around the square, especially for the lunch crowd! Hope Babe's will be open for lunch and not just dinner!

Matties was nothing to get excited over. I lived in Wise County twenty some-odd years and I only ate there a handful of times. I never understood the hype.

I was also disturbed by the fact that they served "Ho-made pie" (as the window proclaimed). I never saw the ho's that made the pie....I guess they kept them locked up in the back. Oh well, I guess I'll never know.

I "heard" that Babe's is going in next to Walgreens across from the new Albersons (or Brookshires) right down the street from Arby's

Anonymous said...

Lol, okay (Last anon) your just trying to stir up the pot here!! QUIT IT!

Anonymous said...

Lol...I agree w/bigcatdaddy...I'd much rather see a Babe's come in town than to see Matties stay - sorry but the food just isn't all that great anymore since the "real Mattie" left.

Anonymous said...

Babe's isn't anything to crow about, either. At least not worth the lines at the one in Roanoke.

Its the same food you find at Luby's, just without the hair nets and giant moles.

Anonymous said...

if the sanger babe's is the same outfit as the one that was first in roanoke over off 114, i hope they dont come here. that fried chicken is so damn good my arteries will be so clogged i will never see that alberstson over by the arby's ever get built.

i "heard" that tom thumb was going up before the alberstsons because long john silvers is building out front and they want to start contrcstion soon before before don pablos and texas roadhouse go up on the service road across from where the taget supercenter has broke ground behind the chipotle and will be beside and 16-screen amc.

bigbelly said...

LUBY'S??!! Uh, I don't think so! Babe's is not your cafeteria style place...it's great down home-cooked food!

Target is going to Bridgeport...

Anonymous said...

Brookshire's is looking in Decatur and Bridgeport. I could tell you how I know but then I wouldn't be anonymous.

Decatur won't get another grocery store chain for a number of years. The grocery companies don't believe Decatur has the population to support one and compete with Wal-Mart. Trust me, I'm right on this one, I've been working in the grocery business for 10 years. They will not attempt to compete with Wal-Mart in a town the size of Decatur.

bigcatdaddy said...

I agree with previous anon. No way they will try to compete with Wally World

Anonymous said...

Target has been coming to Bridgeport for five years now.

To anon at 3:10pm - Duh...the long lines at Babe's says it all!!!

Anna and Jerry Nicholas are very good people and have done Wise County well with Matties. I will surely miss it. It's not just an eating place it is also a place to see and talk with people you know. I don't care what they put there it won't be the same without Jerry's "ho-made" pies!

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I heard Brookshires was coming to Bridgeport too.

Can Decatur get that stopped?

:)

Anonymous said...

I agree about Jerry and Anna. Wonderful folks - generous, friendly, involved.......

Anonymous said...

They may not come but they sure are spending a lot of time looking and have a feeler out on two pieces of ground.

To bigbellyfrombabe's: Britney Spears sells a lot of records but that doesn't mean the music is good. Social proof is all you really need. Of course I know y'all are a bit slow on the uptake so it is not very surprising.

The food is prepared the same way as Luby's. You're just falling for the "homecooked" line. I'd suggest working in the kitchen sometime, but you're probably white and I know white folks don't do that kind of work anymore. My girlfriend did work there, but I sent her back to the barrio when I realized that white people shouldn't mix with others. The stupidity could spill over from us and make other races just as retarded as we are.

As for grocery stores, not competing with Wal-Mart in the town the size of Decatur is asinine. Have you gone to Bowie lately? A Supercenter Wal-Mart opened not too long ago, and a few weeks back a Brookshire's opened. They already had a small IGA-like store, too. Sound familiar? The population of Bowie is similar, but the population of the county is lower than Wise. That line of reasoning doesn't work.

Jerry and Anna are wonderful people and have made it through some hard times. Whatever has happened or will happen to Mattie's is their business and I am sure if they want the public to know about it, they will tell us. Their financial status is non of our business and I don't think that it should be discussed by a bunch of anonymous bloggers!

boredatwork easy there little chicken

Anonymous said...

Dillards Store coming to Decatur - just kidding...............

Anonymous said...

I'm still waiting for the grcoery store that wouldn't come unless we passed the alcohol vote. Well, it passed, but we're still wothout a store. Some people will say anything to get ther way.

Anonymous said...

No more fake Chicken Fried Steaks, I for one am glad to see a hopeful change in owners. These people took a thriving business and ran it into the ground, poor management, both customer and financial.

Anonymous said...

Such viciousness here! Y'all are crazy! Target in Bridgeport? Nope, that deal went out the window long, long ago. Home Depot is looking at some land on 287 near the industrial park Decatur is building near 2264. Circuit City, Chic Fil A, and a few department store chains are eyeing Wise County. Seen what happened to Weatherford? It's coming this way folks. As for Matties, it's gone, move on. It really wasn't good food anyway, so why's everyone teary-eyed?

Anonymous said...

see ya

It isn't even logical business sense to move another grocery store into Decatur. Unless of course they plan on dropping prices on everything. Besides, not just grocery store-but where are all of these "new" business moving too? Our city doesn't have that much land left. I about guarantee you in 5 years the city of Rhome will be larger than Decatur. They have room for expansion, and a vast majority of citizens want growth. Not to mention the housing boom down there. Decatur doesn't have crap. Besides, If I had built my house in Rhome, I would rather them go to Northwest ISD than Decatur anyday.

Those who said that a grocery store would come to Decatur if the town went wet were pulling your leg. Alcohol sales do not increase store profits at all. Most of it is either flat or negative mark-up(meaning the store loses a few cents every time they sell it). This is usually true for grocery stores because they sell it cheaper than convenience stores. Convenience stores make a tiny profit on it, but not much. The grocery stores do make a little bit on the stuff people tend to buy with it.

Reason??? Sure, I'll give you one. Current federal law prevents a retailer from buying the alcohol directly from the manufacturer. Manufacturers must sell their alcohol to licensed distributors. Distributors then can sell it to retailers, who can sell it to you.....this all makes it really expensive.

Perfect example of how absurd this is: I attended Shiner Bocktoberfest back in 2003. They ran out of Shiner beer early in the evening. They got more, but they had to wait for the distributor to deliver it....even though the friggin' brewery was right there were we were. Shiner had to sell beer to a distributor, then buy it back before they could sell it to those of us at the festival. See how stupid it is???

Ok...that was long...I'll shut up now.

Anonymous said...

Sure..... Notice how you can only buy Shiner Bock in Texas?
Why buy beer at a store anyway? You can buy anything you want online.. Heck most websites don't even card you, they just ask for either paypal or for a debit/credit card and your good to go.
Who cares if it is an extra $6 for the case of beer as long as underage kids can get their hands on it, their is no way to beat the system.

Anonymous said...

Uhhh...you can buy Shiner outside of Texas. Its available in several other states.

Anonymous said...

um, yeah ok, so did y'all hear mattie's closed?

Anonymous said...

Is it just me or are there a lot of businesses closing down.. I know that Wings place shutdown, not sure if they opened back up. I was in a hurry to get to work, and wanted one of those greasy sausage sandwiches at jack in the box.. they were closed!! what is wrong with our city? now matties is closed? wtf? I guess when we have no one else to blame-we can always blame the car salesmen that are on the Decatur EDC..

I live in Michigan. My cousin lives in Bridgeport, TX. I was in Decatur in 2001 and ate lunch at Mattie's. It was a really great meal, and I promised myself I would go back next time I was down that way. If Mattie's is really closed, I find that very disappointing.
