My Two Favorite Moments During . . .

. . . the John Roberts confirmation hearings today: #1 John Biden: "With all due respect, you've not -- look, it's kind of interesting, this Kabuki dance we have in these hearings here, as if the public doesn't have a right to know what you think about fundamental issues facing them." #2 And then, frustrated that Roberts would not give an opinion on anything, Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma finally resorted to this: COBURN: Right. I'm not asking you about legal significance. Would you agree that the opposite of being dead is being alive? ROBERTS: (Pause) Yes. (LAUGHTER) I don't mean to be overly cautious in answering it. (LAUGHTER)

Biden wanted to know if his dying father would have the right to pull the plug or if Congress would have the say....Coburn question was "cute" but I think Coburn was saying....If the brain waves are waving and the heart is beating...Congress is going to keep you on life support!!!!!

Roberts, big business choice, will give the radical right their wishes....cause big business is going to get their wishes on envirnomental, workers rights, etc., etc., etc...

Biden's Kabuki dance comment is interesting. Particularly when you listen to it right after hearing his comments from the Ruth Bader Ginsberg hearings in 1993, when he stated that nominees shouldn't be forced to answer questions on issues that will likely come before the court--the same kinds of questions he is asking Roberts to answer today. Of course in 1993, when it was a Clinton nominee, the Republican Judiciary Committee members were trying to force answers to the same questions, and criticizing Ginzberg for failing to provide those answers. It just depends which foot the shoe is on. This part of the process, today as it was in 1993, is a collossal wase of time and taxpayer money. Both judges were well qualified, and Roberts, like Ginzberg, should be confirmed. But it does provide some "super duper" evening entertainment....
