I'm A Business Idiot . . .

. . . but this does not sound good.

But driving into Fort Worth it still looks like every pasture is turning into a subdivision.

Maybe people are getting a little smarter these days. It is astronomical what these home builders charge to build a home when they aren't worth it. When we decided to build a home, we obtained several quotes from builders for around $250,000.00. We decided to forget about hiring a builder; we'll be the contractor. Needless to say, it cost us $130,000.00 instead. We are very pleased and would do it again.

Fox 4 News reported last night that D.R. Horton has three of the top ten highest paid executives in the enire DFW metroplex. They're really hurtin'. Of course all three combined don't add up to what fat cat Bob Simpson at XTO Energy paid himself.

I'm surprised Barry hasn't run withthis one.

Death to McMansions!

To Anon at 11:04 - Amen
Look at the foreclosure rate. Then there's the trees that have been cut down to make way for the McMansions. Of course these homes have to be heated and cooled & the pools filled with water and then pumps used to circulate the water.....

9:01...I agree totally, I am in the process of building a home now and decided to contract it myself as well. We obtained several bids from local builders and I was astonished, not only by what they charged but by the large range in bids that we received. We received one bid that was $75,000 lower than the rest(builder fee was the same), and yes we went over every detail with each builder as far as what we wanted. I worked the figures myself using materials with builders discounts applied, and I could not build the house for as cheap as the low builder had quoted. I spoke to my bank and they said this particular builder usually came in about 30-45k higher than his original bid and they have had to do second mortgages to close a few of his buyers. I could see no other way than to deciding to build on my own, and the money saved allowed us to do a number of upgrades.

Fairly easy to contract the house yourself when you live in the county of the wise. However, in the real world tends to be harder. California impairment issues seem to be the killer for Horton this qtr, as well as large inventory numbers and a tighter mortgage industry.

Last time I checked Wise County was in the real world. People here have jobs and responsibilities like anywhere else. Also, it is fairly easy to contract your house anywhere in the US if you have the money and do not require a mortgage, or if you already carry a builders liscense. There may be more red tape outside of Texas but it can be done.
