One of the million differences I can see is that there doesn't seem to be a state religion in Virginia that promotes suicidal killings. I think it's in extremely poor taste to say that the two places could be compared.
The difference is that we don't care if brown people get killed. But if its some lilly white boy or forbid a girl, we'll be wringing our hands for years.
And 9:25AM, can you cite the specific passage in official religious literature that condones this behavior?
What is happening in Baghdad has nothing to do with a "state religion". Rather, this is a civil war between religious factions.
And lest any self-righteous Christians get too smug, we should consider a historical note, that in the late 1500s the French engaged in not less than 8 such civil wars, between Catholics and Huguenots (Calvinist protestants), in which massacres and counter-massacres were commonplace. Paris of the late sixteenth century was little different than Baghdad of today.
To anonyNOTHING 9:47... These passages are taken directly from the Qur'an regarding people who disagree with Islam and the teachings of Mohammad.
The Cow - Chapter 2.191: "And kill them wherever you find them, and drive them out from whence they drove you out, and persecution is severer than slaughter, and do not fight with them at the Sacred Mosque until they fight with you in it, but if they do fight you, then slay them; such is the recompense of the unbelievers."
Women - Chapter 4.089: "They desire that you should disbelieve as they have disbelieved, so that you might be (all) alike; therefore take not from among them friends until they fly (their homes) in Allah's way; but if they turn back, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them, and take not from among them a friend or a helper."
Not to be outdone the Bible has a say about what should happen to those who disagree with Christianity and the teachings of Jesus.
Deuteronomy 17:5 - "then you shall bring out that man or that woman who has done this evil deed to your gates, that is, the man or the woman, and you shall stone them to death."
Deuteronomy 13:10 - "So you shall stone him to death because he has sought to seduce you from the LORD your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery."
Do not forget that Jesus was jiggy with the Old Testament.
Matthew 5:17-19 - "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
18"For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
19"Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."
For those of you who are not up on your Bible lingo; "Law" = Old Testament.
What do you bet God is NONE too impressed with all the killing done in "The Name of God"?
On a lighter note, did you see wheer "King George" decreed that flags fly @ 1/2 mast for VT losses, but still wants to hide the pictures of the dead American soldiers coming home in flag draped coffins. To the families of fallen soldiers this is an absolute slap in the face.
mzchief: You have misinterpreted those verses in Deut. If you read the verses in context, they are referring to covenant believers who break their covenant with God, to go off and worship false gods and the one in chapter 13 the guilty one is attempting to bring others along to worship false gods.
10:05 You'd think so. But....you know they don't have many TV's over there. The population just keeps multiplying and multiplying and so on and so on.........
The only way to win this war is to pull out, let the Cival War begin, and guide the outcome so that the winner will be the group of Iraqi's that will be easier to deal with in the future. The concept that we can force these people to get along with each other is just stupid.
WWII was a conventional war fought between conventional forces. Beat the other guy's army and navy and you win. This is a civil war. The "bad guys" are not only unidentifiable, they keep changing from day to day. There is no way to "win" without pretty much killing EVERYBODY.
To m&m... I believe someone who becomes disenchanted with Christianity and breaks their "covenant" and attempts to persuade others to do the same falls under the category of disagreeing with Christianity and the teachings of Jesus.
mzchief: But your statement makes it sound as though those death sentences are for all those who disagree, when it only pertains to those who have been in the covenant and break that covenant by worshipping false gods. Which, even that is different than having a death sentence for all nonbelievers.
To anonyNOTHING 5:58... In the Big Book of Myths and Fables there are numerous instances where the "heroes" claim to be commanded by God to kill innocent people who do NOT believe in God.
The message of Numbers 31:1-18 is that Jehovah tells Moses and Aaron to go to the Midianites and kill all the men, then take the booty, the women and children back to their encampments, then to kill all the mothers (because they had sex), then to kill all the boys, and finally to take all the virgins as slaves.
In Joshua 6:1-21 The LORD has Joshua kill all the people of Jericho, man and woman, ox, sheep, ass, with the edge of a sword. However, the LORD is not a TOTAL hardarse because Joshua was ordered to spare the prostitute who betrayed the people of Jericho and hid Joshua's spies.
In Deut 20:10-17 God demands that when capturing a city the captor must first offer surrender. However, if the inhabitants do not surrender and war is waged that the captor is to "not leave alive anything that breathes." Yep! That means kill ALL women, children, men, goats, sheep, fowl, dogs, cats.
Keep in mind that as stated in Matthew 5:17-19 Jesus is cool with ALL of this murder and mayhem.
There are MANY more verses to site but I NEED to go to supper.
5:02, ok, to explain this slowly, I fear that there is NO way to "win" in the middle of a civil war where everybody is killing everybody and half the time our own soldiers are collateral damage to an attack conducted by Shiites against Sunnis and vice versa. I suspect that, in this situation, the only way to "win" would be to kill pretty much everybody. And since I am opposed to killing pretty much everybody, then yes, I think we should get out now.
The "liberal mantra" thing is getting to be a really old and pathetic excuse. There are plenty of conservative Republicans who believe as I do.
Vietnam became such a quagmire, and it wasn't "lost" by "liberals." We bombed the crap out of Vietnam under the "liberal" LBJ, and vacated Vietnam under the leadership of "conservative" Richard Nixon.
We need to quit worrying about being afraid to "look like liberal weenies" or to "look like bloodthirsty conservatives", and start looking for common sense solutions. There is nothing inherently "liberal" in admitting we made a strategic blunder, and getting our butts the hell OUT of Iraq so we can start rebuilding what army we have left. Because we ARE going to need it again, somewhere. And probably sooner than later.
To txsharon... You are MISTAKEN. PRIOR to the Multi National Coalition invasion of Iraq in 2003, The Baath Party which was comprised EXCLUSIVELY of Sunni Muslims had been "in control" of Iraq since 1968 which is why the Shia Muslims and Kurds were REPEATEDLY victimized and massacred by Saddam Hussein and his Sunni Muslim Baathist henchmen.

The daily dead numbers in WWII???

Isn't there a bible passage where God tell the Israelis to attack a city and kill all the WOMEN and CHILDREN?
Also in the middle ages the Christians waged war on the middle east in the name of "God".

Harry S. Truman was a Southern Baptist. So how did he feel about dropping a bomb that killed women and children?
But he got the thing over with. War is hell to some folks.
What is it to Bush?
Black, greasy oil.

Many Iraqis are Christian. There was NO state sponsored religion untill.........America invaded!
However, if being a member of a radical religious group means it's okay to get blown up, WATCH OUT!!!
