Random Thursday Morning Thoughts

  • The far right embarrassed itself with attacks on Ted Kennedy yesterday. Twenty-four hours of respect doesn't seem like too much to ask for, right? You guys are beginning to scare us.
  • At the height of conservatism, Kennedy was smart enough not to say a word during the "high tech lynching" of Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas even though he sat on the Judiciary Committee.
  • I heard from a very reliable source that the Bridgeport girls caught in the awning collapse were not jogging by the building but instead had been dropped off in front of it. Not that that's a big deal.
  • Fox 4 News, which treats Wise County better than any other station, dropped the ball on Tuesday when they failed to cover the teenager's death on its 5 or 6 o'clock news. It made up for it last night with a retrospect.
  • And Channel 8 interviewed the buildings owner Norris and Joyce Cheeves. The station also covered a preliminary memorial service and I'm pretty sure I heard a song from Rent in the background.
  • A longtime Bridgeport resident was convicted of misdemeanor assault in the courthouse yesterday. I don't think he helped his cause when he testified that he was the one who was actually assaulted but didn't call the cops because, "I don't like cops. Cops are stupid."
  • I got a tip that Messenger sports reporter Robert Morgan is no longer with the paper. That would be shocking and even more shocking on the eve of football season.
  • A buddy emailed me the AP Texas Top 10 Football Preseason Poll the other day. I didn't see the name of a single Wise County school. (I'm sure the link is out there somewhere - just trust me on this one.)
  • Uh, oh. I found this TexasHSFootball.com poll that lists Decatur at #38 but fails to list Bridgeport.
  • And the same web site believes Boyd as the 8th best team in the State.
  • The Swine Flu number at TCU is up to 80? (I swore I heard that on WBAP this morning.) Edit: It's actually 88.
  • I thought I had a pretty funny line a couple of weeks ago when I said I wanted to be on one of those "death panels" because "I'm a pretty good decision maker." But I got nothing.
  • I'm guessing that Texas will be of a Democrat majority in, oh, nine years. I've preached it for years: It's not about politics, it's about demographics.
  • You can't believe some of the comments I don't post, and I can't believe the number of cowards that send me anonymous attack emails via the comments. Come on, send me an email with your name on it.

Didn't respect him when he was alive. It would be disingenious to do so for 24 hours just because he died. Good riddance.

The one on the left might have a piece of gravel in her top

Anonymous said...

Respect, Barry? I know you didn't want this mentioned and you probably won't post this, but he had no respect whatsoever for the girl he left to drown in that car now did he? And he virtually got off even though he pleaded guilty to "leaving the scene", what a joke, and all simply because of who he was...good riddance.

Anonymous said...

Not that it is of any importance but the girls were dropped off at the red light by the post office. I saw them get out of the car with my own eyes.

In retrospect they were probably trying to catch the other girls and hitched a ride with a classmate who picked them up while they were running.

Teddy sure as hell did'nt give Mary Jo 24 hours of respect, now did he Barry?

Fry, Teddy, Fry!!!

The right can't bite their tongue for 24 hours? They lack self control? Why are they always in a hurry to be mean? I don't get that about the Right- why can't they just be nice? So many questions.

Anonymous said...

Kennedy left Mary Jo to die, trapped in an air pocket, after he got drunk and drove her into a creek. He should have received a prison sentence.

No, we did not embarrass ourselves by celebrating his death.

For his silence on the Thomas nomin ation was more than made up for by his vitriole during the Bork and Aledo hearings.

His behaviour was beneath the dignity of his office....something he managed to accomplish quite a few times in his career.

Is that the same assault case that started on Tuesday when I wasn't selected as a juror?

Ted was a statesman of almost unmeasurable caliber and deserves respect as a senator, like our president deserves respect, like the oval office deserves respect (Ronald Regan never took his jacket off in there, I believe he may have been the last to "get it"), so failure of respect in one situation does not give you permission to disrepect anyone else. It seems we need more switch toating grandma's these days to teach respect. I was in Garden Ridge over the weekend as a young Mom, her Mom, and Grandma all shopped with the youngest's children, as we followed them the children became more unruley to the point one of the started dumping stuff off the shelves because he didn't get something he wanted, mom and g'ma did nothing but great grand ma laid down the law, said shopping trip was "OVER" and she was wearing out some butt when the got to the car, I am pretty sure she was not only talking about her grandson

Anonymous said...

Is running down main street part of their course?

Anonymous said...

Go great grandma!
And just for information....Dubwa did NOT allow anyone in the Oval Office without a jacket, either! I don't want a bunch of Dubwa comments, just making a statement!

Ted's father was just like the children he fathered. He did not like his daughter Rosemary because she was not in the above normal IQ range. She rebelled when she felt an outcast in her own family so father Joe had a hole cut in her head and severed the front and back sections of her brain. Then they put her in an institution and seldom visited or mentioned her. This led to Eunice's life work. She had been close to her sister. She was the only good thing that came out of that family.

Hell no, I am not embarrassed. I am tired of your lies. I have to read the preamble to the Declaration of Independence to feel there is any hope.

House of R and R said...

Why is pointing out someone's failings disrespectful? Does it not happen with people of all stripes? I was bombarded this morning with all the "good" public programs Kennedy was involved in that I pay with my tax dollars. I respect the office of a Senator but it doesn't mean I think Kennedy was a good Senator.

As for Robert Morgan being gone, does this mean when Alvord plays Chico we won't be left wondering who the "locals" are in the column. Geez, use the school or team name, not locals. I enjoyed his stories of struggle to lose weight and the success he found. His sports columns needed a little refining.

* Orrin Hatch and John McCain, both from the right, have been quite complimentary of Ted Kennedy. However, they are politicians and that definitely skews their judgment of what constitutes someone being a good person. It would be interesting to see how quickly it would take the left to draw the long knives and who from the left would have anything good to say about "W" after he dies.

* I find it difficult to believe Barry only receives nasty-grams via comments and e-mail. I would have thought, based on the depth of mindless hate spewed on The Blog, Barry would have received anthrax notes and discovered countless flaming bags of meadow muffins at his doorstep.

Let's face it, the left and right are so polarized now that no one will say anything positive about a leader from the other side. We ignore the faults of our own political leaders while demonizing any/every perceived fault of our opponents. Nothing constructive will ever get done while we maintain this attitude.

Ted Kennedy was a blowhard dem who tried to grandstand at anytime. He also had a resume that anyone would kill for. I may have muted the channel everytime he talked or changed the channel, but he did a lot.

Maybe I am to young, but why is it the only thing you ever hear on the man is the death of that girl? Has anyone bashing him and making anonymous comments never done something wrong in the heat of the moment?

Barry, you are right regarding the lack of courtesy immediately following the death of Edward Kennedy. I had issues with his behavior, but now is not the time to re-hash old battles. As my dear sainted mother used to say, you should respect the dead, no matter how you felt while they lived.

The current political rancor frightens me. I saw it on the left for GWB, and now see it on the right for Obama. It seems that we cannot have political discourse without making it all about vitriol. Have we become a nation of nutbags? I hope not.

As a boy, I used to enjoy seeing Senator Everett Dirksen and LBJ weigh-in against one another on the Senate floor. Always respectful, yet forceful. And at the end of the day, they would frequently sit down for a bourbon and branch water, friendly associates in spite of their political differences.

I see some of the same fervor in extreme Judeo-Christians that I see in extreme believers of Islam. I guess a fanatic is a fanatic, regardless of the faith.

Barry, question--

If the girls were technically working out with the cross-country team, is there different insurance coverage?

I bet Bridgeport has some sort of athletics insurance. And maybe it would provide more support for both families.

But the question is whether they were working out, or just out after school.

What once made our nation great was mutual respect. I suppose when folks endure the struggle for survival that was the Great Depression, and then top that off with WWII's desperate struggle against madness (in Europe) and brutality (in the Pacific), common bonds of humanity are forged that tend to put in perspective the way someone else's political knee jerks. It's small potatoes, folks.

And as for anyone else's human failings, spend some time looking in your own mirrors and cleaning out your own closets.

BG, your comment about serving on the death pannel was funny. We enjoyed it.

And as for Robert Morgan, his struggle for weight loss was well done, but his sports "reporting" was frequently fiction. (Ex: the Decatur baseball playoff game a couple of years back, which he didn't even attend, and which reported on the outstanding performance by a player who wasn't even at the game due to a conflict, and which concluded with his interview of the coach he never spoke to.)

Anonymous said...

Moynihan was a statesman. Kennedy was not. Jack Kennedy was a statesman. LBJ was not. How can you guys mix this up?

Ted Kennedy has moved to Chicago, since he's eligible to vote there.

Anonymous said...

Robert Morgan no longer with The Messenger? Man, the guy endured a lot of CRAP from the outlying areas of Decatur accusing him of being a "homer" but, as a relatively newbie to Wise County, I thought he was pretty fair in his coverage. (Quite honestly, TOO fair with the coverage of Northwest as I can't seem to believe many of that school's population live in, care about, or read anything to do with Wise County). Also, kudos to whomever @ the Messenger staff put together the Fall sports insert.......finally got coverage of sports OTHER than football!! and the special "movie" trailers for the football teams are awsome!

Lots of talk about Kennedy – rightfully so – many mistakes in his life – many do overs needed. I can’t say what it would be like to carry the burden of a family with four sons and be the only one to die of natural causes; and to carry on the family business (politics) when that is what led to the deaths of two of the brothers.

Many disagreed with Kennedy and he disagreed with many. But he never forgot how to accomplish what he felt needed to be done. Bush would have never pass No Child Left Behind without Kennedy’s help.

“You can't believe some of the comments I don't post”

I cant decide why I bother to read comments from this and other current event sites. The number of comments that are stated as fact but are just opinions (many from me) drive me crazy. It reminds me of the Town Hall videos where people go flying off in a direction that in many cases are completely uninformed and have no intention of listening to a contrary view that might even be well informed.

the non christian racist democrats will have a hard time of winning an election. the dems have showed that they have wants to be a party that pushes division among the races i.e. there election of a president who listens to people like the rev. wright and who is quoted as saying that he denounces his white mothers race. they are not angered when there lead man says that america is not a christian nation. the democrats support socialism i.e. you and me working to death to support lazy people. the democrats also wish to take away our 2nd amendment rights. the de,mocrats have a bleeding heart for crimnals they wish to make it easy and safer for them to operate taking away our rights to protect ourselves is the best thing they have. so as to your prediction barry i doubt that the democrats will win of course they might if we are unable to make our voting system more secure to keep non registered voters i.e. illegal aliens from voting.

Never understood why when someone dies we are supposed to "say nice things". How stupid is that? If someone was a liar and horrible person prior to death, the Grim Reaper doesn't transform them into a nice guy. I say, when a creep dies, good riddance and hallalujah...no need for lies about how sorry we are, when we aren't!

The whole Kenneday clan was a bunch of whoremongers and crooks who literally got away with murder, from Mary Jo to Marilyn Monroe (sainted John and Robert). They played hard, broke all the rules of society, and didn't have to pay any earthly price at all. I personnally think that's why so much tragedy has befallen the entire family.....what goes around, Karma, and all that! Don't ascribe to the theory of rspecting the dead. The dead only deserve the respect they earned in life.

Just to clear things up on the the girls from Bridgeport. My daughter is really good friends with the girl that dropped Leslie and Becca off. All the other cross country girls where running at the lake. Leslie and Becca decided they wanted to go downtown to select screenings to look at the cross country t-shirts. They where dropped off at the post office and where walking to select screenings to look at the shirts and then the plan was to run back to the high school where there cars where and that would get them there mile in that the coach required.

I have had the pleasure and joy of having both of these girls at my house and I have to say these girls are the most stand up girls I have ever met in my life! Leslie will be truly missed and my heart is in a million pieces over this tragedy. Becca will recover with the help of prayer and support of friends and family! My thoughts and prayers are with both families and all of her friends!!

If Robert Morgan is no longer with the paper then he might be better off anyway.

I can’t speak for the new owner, but I can tell you that Roy Eaton was not a fair boss, and he would fire people for totally unfounded accusations against his employees without taking the time to get that employee’s side of the story (and someone in journalism is supposed to get all sides of a story….right?!?!?!) One day he tells his employees that they are doing a great job……he gets a complaint about an employee and fires them the next day without so much as a warning!

He did it to me, and he did it to at least one other very hard-working employee I know who worked there.

Granted, the paper is under a new publisher, but some of the same people there are still involved in leadership positions, and they are just as problematic and have the same knee-jerk reactions when they perceive a problem. If Robert quit, then he had enough. If he was fired, then it was probably for an unfair reason.

It's a mistake to think American politics has ever been about peace, harmony and everyone getting along. (The Bill of Rights is a great example.) Like guy wires, the tension of advocating different sides of an issue keeps us strong -- one side (hopefully) keeps the other more honest, and from doing too much harm. As the Democrats jerk hard on the rope to pull the nation to the left and under government control, Conservatives pull back hard in the other direction. Of course, when Conservatives speak, Liberals describe it as "hate speech" or "mean-spirited." (Quick point of reference: Liberals believe Conservatives are evil, while Conservatives believe Liberals are foolish.)

The last Kennedy will be mourned more than enough by worshippers (especially in the media,) so the few of us who don't fall to our knees in lamentation will stand out in contrast. Liberals bowdlerize his life story while those of us who remember the past take a moment to grieve for Mary Jo.

Maybe some clarification is needed by the word "wrong".

Wrong-not in accordance with what is morally right and good (Random House Unabridged Dictionary)

I may be young, but not a f'n mental midget that can't put together the connection of a phrase.

Ted Kennedy should have gone to jail just as the people who leave the people in their windshields to die, same damn thing. My comments were in regards to as much as the guy was a drunk, recently absent politician, his resume kicks the hell out of yours and mine. Every single person has done something "wrong" in the heat of the moment. It is rarely to that degree, but careful throwing that stone.

O.J. Simpson, Heisman from USC, played with the Bills and ran like a M'fer. Also was ACCUSED and ACQUITED of murder and now sits in jail on multiple charges.

ONE: 'You shall have no other gods before Me.'

TWO: 'You shall not make for yourself a carved image--any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.'

THREE: 'You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.'

FOUR: 'Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.'

FIVE: 'Honor your father and your mother.'

SIX: 'You shall not murder.'

SEVEN: 'You shall not commit adultery.'

EIGHT: 'You shall not steal.'

NINE: 'You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.'

TEN: 'You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's.'

As stated in my comment EARLIER not EARLY.
What I do care about is getting the word out that Leslie was a great girl (in the past) and Becca is (presently) still a great girl. Were--has been, WHERE--a place, you still didn't learn anything, you really are ignorant.

A little proper spelling/grammar lecture: Were (We were great friends. I remember when you were my neighbor) Where: (Where is the beef? Where are my sunglasses? Where do you live?) There: (I will be be right there to get you. Is there a football game tonight? Do you want to go here or there?) Their: (Their parents are stupid. Their time was up. Their bodies were crushed when they were running underneath the awning that was there. There is nothing anyone can do, to undo this accident so move on everybody and tomorrow is a new day.
Glad I could help you with this lesson in grammar and in life.

No one has started any rumors nor has anyone said anything derogatory about the two girls.

God wanted to call Leslie home and her mission here on earth was fulfilled, whereas Becca still has things to accomplish on this earth before her Heavenly Father calls her home to paradise. People die every day, just watch the news it's everywhere, I'm so numb that things like this don't even phase me. I didn't know her or her family and really honestly don't care. But the fact of the matter is that Leslie is a very lucky young lady she is with Christ and God in a place of perfection. People need to understand that when someone dies it's a great thing not a bad thing. Living here on earth is what is bad.
Toodles,
Signed someone who has been through a lot in my life and part of the tough times were when I was paying to be educated. All I have to say is people you're "Amazingly pathetic".
