HOW BAD COULD IT GET?

A 1968 a "Hong Kong" flu pandemic killed about one million people globally. The 1957-58 pandemic killed about 2 million. The 1918 pandemic killed between 40 million and 100 million, according to some estimates. However, the WHO says the world is now better prepared to withstand a flu pandemic. Vaccines and antiviral drugs are available that were not around during previous pandemics.

In 1918, there was a first wave of mild flu in April. It then seemed to disappear during the Northern Hemisphere's summer but came back severely in August. WHO and CDC officials say it is possible this virus could behave in the same way, or completely differently.

Already sick of the "sky is falling" mentality! AGAIN: 36,000 die annually of the flu. This is not news, folks.

We have one death in TX from the flu and all UIL activities are re-scheduled. What's next? Jr.& Sr. proms, all banquets. This is kinda crazy, don't ya think?

Anonymous said...

The one death we had is a Mexican child that JUST came up from Mexico. What is next, close down Taco Bell?

just when i thought the "year 2000" scare with computers worldwide crashing because of the date was the dumbest thing ever, the UIL pulls this one out of its butt.

If there are no sports does this mean that all schools should be delayed until May 11th
i think the whole world should go into hiding until may 11th

It's got to be Bush's fault.

Yep. Just received an e-mail from our athletic director that track and basesball events are cancelled until May 11th.

From Bridgeport ISD.

UIL is taking the top 4 TIMES per region to the state track meet (where there is no guarantee that the Swine Flu condtions will be any better in the state). To get to regionials, kids just had to finish in the top 3 PLACES. The Wise County kids ran in (literally) sleet and cold rain at their district championship in Vernon (UIL's decision to put Decatur and Bridgeport in the Wichita Falls district is ridiculous). This "top 4 times" decision benefits districts that ran in 80 degree sunny weather AND penalizes multi-event athletes who's coach told them to "just finish in the top 3" to save energy for their next event.

I wish I had a chair to throw.

1:48 you are so right....This is ridiculous. Well let's not leave out the fact that they had hand held timers, no official film, and of course the 3200 only running 7 laps. It was a joke all away around. Just so they could get in times for the regional track meet.

Better call NOW to get a hotel room if you have a child now not going to regionals and going to state instead. Maybe this is just a way to bring more people to Austin for tourism sake!

Just heard there are two confirmed cases in Wise County -- one in Decatur and one in Bridgeport. Is it true?

What part of "confirmed" are you doubting? Who is the source?

And that pic is nas-TEE!

Why would a pig let some little floor monster do that? Ugh!

Just got a call from Northwest auto-mated service, of 2 students one at Rhome and one in Roanoke, who are being tested, they are showing signs.

ESPN (103.3) AND Dallasnews.com is reporting that UIL is considering holding Regional Track Meets in mid-May and moving State Meet to late May. THIS would be fair to the Wise County Athletes!!

Said that UIL has been getting hammered with phone calls: 512-471-5883. For once, maybe Decatur and Bridgeport can be on the same page when it comes to athletics......CALL!!!

Okay..I am not an alarmist but down here in south Texas 3 districts are closed, 2 until May 11. One district started with 2 students and now there are over 300 suspected cases. Now I know that suspected doesn't mean for sure but they are exhibiting the symptoms and not sure what else would cause them. They can't be confirmed because the CDC is taking 4+ days to test. From 2 cases to 300 in 5 days is a little rapid and these students haven't been in school since last Friday. I'm just saying......

I know how that kid feels. I mugged down with a chick from Frilly's one night.

good thing this didn't happen during football season.

Lewisville ISD has cancelled/postponed ALL extra-curricular events(concerts, banquets, proms, etc.)until
May 11.

Seems like everyone is jumping on the swine flu panic train. Leave it to Obama to figure a way to use swine flu to misuse another $1.5 billion of taxpayer funds.

Ahem...Before anyone starts wetting themselves in panic. Step back and take a LOOOOOOONG look at the REAL NUMBERSAs of 4.29.09 at 5:00 pm EDT the CDC announced there were 91 CONFIRMED cases of swine flu (H1N1) in the U.S.

51 in NY
16 in TX
14 in CA

the remainder in Massachusetts, Michigan, Arizona, Nevada, Indiana, Kansas and Ohio.

Reuters.comRather than spreading STUPID RUMOURS and fear mongering, use "The Google" and get some FACTS!
