The Pig Will Not Be Denied: Wise County Hit

Northwest ISD closes two schools after confirmed case of Swine Flu. The entire Denton ISD is also shutting down. Every other open school district appears to still be sane.

If Wal-Mart closes.... Then it's crisis time!!

All of the kids can go to Six Flags and have the week off. Just close all schools and be done with it.

Yet again the blog beats the WC Messenger...wow. Straight up Pathetic! Congrats Barry!!! I hope someone from the messenger reads this!

Wonder what you think the WC Messenger did to you??? Oh so bitter! Won't help you in the long run! Hurts no one but you!
Get over it!

I don't think BG is in a competition with the WCM! Both of them are news worthy!

This seems so simple, yet imagine your child dying from the swine flu when shool was not shut down after first confirmed case!

This seems so simple if you have easy direct acces to doctors and hospitals, but if you don't?

Think it thru.

You are correct, 7:58. This is/can be considered a liability issue as well. IF your child (student) contracted Swine Flu and the school system had been "advised" to close, but didn't....and your child dies from Swine Flu complications...........then GUESS WHAT? The school is now in a very liable position and a very easy target for a law suit.

The Wise County Schools that are closed have students with Type A influenza. Bridgeport has been notified that they have at least 1 Type A case...
Why would the schools in Wise County handle this differntly?
Oh wait, maybe those that are closing don't have a Bond package about to be voted on with Early voting at ALL the school events!
We are going to wait and see if this is H1N1, because spreading the good ole Type A flu is reasonable during this kind of global health situation!

Seems ridiculous to me that everyone (mainly teachers) wants to shut the school districts down only to take their families to Six Flags, Zoo, mall, etc. Sounds like they are just tired of working.

Bridgeport now has Case #2 at a different school from the first child that has it. I agree if my child was to contract it after a school has been advised to close and didn't I wil promise you there will be a lawsuit!

From a Wise Co. paramedic, I understand there ARE 12 confirmed Swine Flu cases in Wise Regional Hospital at this time.

Notice how swine flu has distracted everyone from the crumbling economy? Gives the president a "crisis" to "handle in a presidential manner". Hmmm.

If nothing else, swine flu has knocked the GM (federal government "invested" $23.4 billion) and Chrysler (federal government "invested" $4 billion) bankruptcies out of the top story slot. I guess $27 billion doesn't go as far as it used to.

A question about schools closing: Will they have to make up the lost time at the end of the school year?

Anonymous said...

WordKyle, right now they (state officials) say the schools that miss due to the Swine Flu may submit a waiver asking that they not be mandated to makeup days missed. It is very, very likely the schools will not have to make up the days.

To 9:25 and 10:06 -

You are idiots - both of you.

There have been NO CONFIRMED cases of SWINE flu in Decatur. I repeat - there have been NO CONFIRMED cases of SWINE flu in Decatur. Just because your cousin or the check out girl at the WM said it is true it doesn't make it true. Some people have the flu. This is true for most months Fall through Spring. Who are you going to sue the rest of the time?

If you sue the DISD because your kid gets the flu then you will also need to sue the Walmart, McDonalds, Alsups, neighbor kid, your church, and the kids at the park - oh - and yourself because you are just as likely to bring it into your home as some random stranger or school district. Oh - and maybe your kids should sue you for being such an idiot. If you loved them more you should have wrapped them in bubble wrap and face mask and kept them home yourself. Instead you choose to blame the school.

Idiots.

If there had been a CONFIRMED case of SWINE flu and the "actual" PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICIALS who have the authority to do so had required the school to close it would have closed.

Well, 10:15, what's wrong with taking kids to Six Flags and the Zoo? These are outside venues with plenty of fresh air. A classroom is an enclosed space where germs thrive and is essentially a petri dish. Why can't you be concerned for students, teachers, all citizens in your community?

11:07 - I call BS on 12 confirmed swine flu at Wise Regional. Source? Or is it hush-hush conspiracy?

I heard a rumor that if the State of Texas orders the school closed, that the school won't have to make up the time. However, those schools that already decided to close will have to make it up.

This is just something I heard - not at all verified (just blog material) :-)

Denton ISD is closed the week of 5-4, resuming 5-11.

Sunday, May 3, 2009 CDC numbers show an increase in confirmed cases of pig flu but no new deaths. More people have died from seasonal flu the week of April 11-18, 2009 than have died from H1N1. I'm pretty sure there aren't 12 confirmed cases of swine flu at Wise Regional, especially since there are only 40 confirmed cases in the entire state of Texas. Folks, let's try to focus on facts and back away from rumors.

Ok- Some of the schools in wise county have closed due to "the flu"- may not be swine flu, don't know yet, but they were still advised to close for precautionary measures. Why then is one school in particular still opened when there are TWO flu cases still waiting to be determined if they are swine flu????? I don't understand this at all. One of two things are happening here: the other schools were not advised to shut down while waiting for results and/or the one school in particular doesn't give a rat's *** about it's kids, because why oh why would some schools be told to close and not another??? Can someone please answer this one for me.

That line about 12 cases in the hospital is total BS --

None of these patients are staying in the hospital. They get their TamiFlu and go home.

12:58, YOU'RE the idiot who probably has no children of your own. It's evident you don't understand didly squat! It is MANDATORY (truancy laws) that school age children attend school, or didn't you know that? It is NOT mandatory that they attend Walmart, McDonalds or any of those other places you spout out. Students have to ANSWER for their absences in schools therefore, if schools don't take appropriate action during times of "threat" then they ARE LIABLE. Why in the hell do you think they dismiss schools during bad weather.... so the kids can go have a jolly good time in the snow at home? When you want to call someone an "idiot," you best look in the mirror and call away!!

12:58 here.

I do have children - two in fact.

I do know Diddly Squat - we have lunch.

I am also aware of truancy laws.

Check your school policy for absences (it is online)

"A person required to attend school may be excused for temporary absence resulting from any cause acceptable to the teacher, principal, or Superintendent of the school in which the person is enrolled. Education Code 25.087
TEMPORARY
ABSENCES "

I am sure you could make a case - if only for your overreaction itself. Sue!! Liable!!! They will give your kid a pass simply to get rid of you.

My point is your child could catch flu from ANYWHERE. Unless your entire family stays home and never goes out into the community then anyone in your family can bring the flu virus home. You can't sue the school - you can't prove that your child became ill because of attending school alone. You keep saying the school is LIABLE! They are not. You are misinformed and over reacting.

BTW - it is all a moot point. Decatur is closed Monday and Tuesday while waiting for the results of the flu tests.

Panic and over reactions impede rational thought. Step back and look at the big picture here.

5:54, AND 12:58, you obviously do not have any idea of what the law is and what liability is. I beg to differ with you, because schools CAN be held liable if they do not react in a manner that protects their student body. If you are a teacher, or worse, an administrator, then you BETTER realize what REALITY is! Parents will sue (btw, I never said that I would; I simply said that schools would become a target for law suits.)if schools do not protect the children. PANIC is what YOU would do in the event the flu epidemic is a reality and YOU are an administrator who decided to keep the kiddos in the hot box. Seems to me you're a little "over hyped" as soon as someone mentions the words, LAW SUIT. Wonder why that is?
