This picture was on the front page of the Messenger this week and there's no question the angle was intentional in order to get the billboard in the background. It's kind of a contrast between birth and death especially since the fatality involved a very elderly individual.
I really don't have any problem with that at all.
Edit: I'll be. He says it wasn't intentional.

This is a new low for even you.
shame :-(
just when i thought that photographer would never make a family feel low again, he stoops to a new all-time low.
i wonder if he will find joy when a member of his family is killed in an accident.
Guys! Delivering joy! as in a "new delivery to heaven". Do you honestly think the sign meant anything else? You gloom and doom guys wouldn't see a Godley message if it slapped you in the face.
Nicely done Joe!
Who cares about the sign. The only thing I get tired of with Joe Duty pictures is the crying people and the kids with their mouths open.
9:38,
I think that is a far-fetched assumption. The sign is talking about babies being born, obviously. Not people that died in a car crash going to heaven. How did Joe Duty know if the person that died is going to heaven or not?
Duty needs to think about the family members that are greeving. The morning after the wreck, I sure as hell wouldn't want to see a picture of me having a crying fit when my family member just died, or see the car that they died in. That's not delivering the news. It's sick.
joe, you did it again.
Attaboy! keep it up my friend!
Totally unrelated, but could someone tell me if the Bridgeport School Bond Election includes artificial turf at the football field? I keep hearing it does and then I hear it does not??
I also greeve for nitwits that think everyone else in the world is as big a retard as they themselves are.
Totally greeve.
11:47, I'm sure those nitwits grIEve for you as well. It still amazes me how people can criticize as though they have no reason to be criticized. Nobody is perfect. Remember that when jumping at the chance to point out someone's faults.
I kinda like the contrast between new life and death. You guys act like death is such a horrible deal and it isn't. It's only a part of they cycle of life. The car crashed up is another story. I hate to see that and really hate to see the crying or hurting occupants. But the contrast between life and death is somewhat thought-provoking, I think. When my relatives died, I wasn't all sad but happy for them that they had completed the cycle here and were beginning a new and better one. It seems rather ignorant and at best non-spiritual to look at death so negatively.
Death couldn't be so bad. Nobody ever comes back and complains about it.
You are a total A____ as far as I am concerned. This is directed to Anonymous. I am sure if one of Joe's family members were to be killed in an accident, he would grieve just like any other parent or human in this world. Do you really think he enjoys taking the accident pictures? Have you ever bothered to ask him HOW he feels after he covers a wreck???? The sick feeling he gets when he has to photograph the brains being scraped off the side of the car of a small child? Why don't you think about that????? All you are is a small minded critic as far as I am concerned with to much time on your hands!!!! GET A LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think Joe Duty is a freekin genius with a camera! Great job!
Every day the WCM creeps one step closer to being "The Toast of the Coast Herald".
Trust me, I know Joe, and I know he DOES NOT enjoy taking these photos. He is simply fulfilling his boss' wishes, no matter how insensitive they are, FIRST with Roy Eaton and now the new guy.
The people at the Messenger honestly believe that these wreck photos sell newspapers.
I call it unethical!
The photo might have more to do with the fact that THE HOSPITAL ADVERTISES WITH THE PAPER and the Messenger will bend over backward to please their clients, no matter how ridiculous!
Ya'll are missing the point of Mr. Duty's coverage of car wrecks. This isn't news - just a description of cars that have smashed into one another. Has happened in the past and will not impact any of our lives going forward. What this has done, is to create some so called "controversy" because Mr. Duty and his editor both know, there is no such thing as bad publicity.
Put down the WC Messenger, get a NY Times and read the real news.
anon 2:28 must be named julie duty. you need to try a little harder to not be so obvious.
and noone side he liked taking these pictures, but it is clear he intended for that sign to be in the picture. obvious, mrs. duty, and that was what JOE wanted in that picture.
Most newspapers don't have this quantity of accident photos. Granted, Wise County has more accidents than most other counties, but look at other newspapers around the country, whether daily or weekly. Do you see accident photos accompany every accident scene in such graphic detail? The answer is no.
Most newspaper editors actually are sensitive about the people involved and would never publish these kinds of photos (that wouldn't and SHOULDN'T keep them from running a story, however). In addition to being highly insensitive to the families, they're also BORING to look at to anyone not personally involved.
The Messenger's circulation has gone down for good reason. The publisher and the editor are quick to dismiss anyone who complains because they believe that anything that bleeds will lead. I would encourage all of you to contact any business that advertises with that paper and make your displeasure known.
Yeah, in the NY times, you can see all the people getting blown up in the war torn countries. You can see greiving moms, wakes, natural disasters......that's REAL news. Joe covers "our distasters" and gets raked over the coals after his EDITOR picks out the pictures they want to run.
You guys don't know what news is, or what a great photographer looks like. Move to Alvord man, the Weekly is more your speed!
It is sad to see all these photos, because death to humans is a sad thing, but if they (these wreck photos) disappeared, then the same people here criticizing these photos, will go right back to whining when the Messenger misses a motorcycle accident, or when BG posts it here before the "breaking news Update" gets to it.
My grandfather used to say, "You'd complain if you were hung with a new rope." So many of you here don't wish to add intelligent conversation, but are happy complaining - ALL THE TIME! I am sad for you - life is so much happier when you are happy, and not constantly complaining.
Joe Duty is a good man. I know him personally; in fact, I know most of his family, and until you've had to walk in his shoes, you have no idea what it's like to do his job. The Dutys are good people with values, morals, ethics and hearts. I know that because I've witnessed it. And no, I'm not his wife or son, or anyone remotely kin to him - just a person who knows he cares.
8:16-Joe Duty is not the problem. He is simply doing what his bosses tell him to do. Other newspaper publishers don't publish this volume of accident scenes.
If they were doing articles about the good people like Chris Peek and the other Firefighters of Rhome who are pictured, instead of tasteless crash pictures, I might renew my subscription.
This is Roy Eaton's legacy.
The man obsessed over accident pictures when he was publisher, and he evidently chose a successor who obsesses equally as much.
To anonymous! I went through and read all the comments about my husband Joe Duty and wish that I could comment on some of the things that are said about him. I will comment on you thinking it was me that made some comment about the wreck, but you are wrong. I will comment on you though and you are a moron, and idiot.
The wife of Joe Duty
It is the news and these awful accidents need to be covered...Wise county is a dangerous place to drive. Maybe these pictures will cause someone to drive a little slower with a little more caution and save someones life! I know I am always a little more cautious after seeing something like this. As for the billboard I think you are all really reaching for something that was not intentional--
You go Juls! They ARE idiots! Joe's the best thing that happened to Wise County and the paper! These guys just want something to gripe about. If the WCM published a picture of a donkey's ass, they'ld gripe because he captured their momma's "bad side." HHHEEEE HAWW!
WELL SAID 9:55 PM.
It's hard to argue with 9:55 's post.
