Decatur ISD's Position On Pigdemic

April 30, 2009

Parents:

The Decatur Independent School District considers the health and safety of our students as our top priority. With the recent announcement of some confirmed cases of swine flu in North Texas school districts, DISD has been particularly watchful on all of our campuses.

No confirmed swine flu cases have been reported in Decatur ISD, however we have two suspected cases of Type A influenza in the district. We are communicating with local health authorities as well as the regional health department, and we are confident that we will be notified immediately if this case is confirmed as swine flu.

The custodial staff at all campuses are diligently cleaning and disinfecting, as is done every day, to make sure our schools are safe. As we remind our students and staff to take precautionary measures, we encourage parents to reinforce the same measures at home such as:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after they cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.

  • Cover their nose and mouth with a tissue when they cough or sneeze.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread that way.

  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

At this time, all DISD campuses are open. Should we receive any information of a confirmed case of Swine Flu, we will consult with the appropriate officials to determine what needs to be done to protect our students.

I'm shocked DISD didn't advise students to stay away from friends and family members who had, via the southern border, illegally entered the U.S. within the past 2 weeks.

Hot Pig Virus Prediction: DISD to close schools within 24 hours.

At least for now, they are acting with common sense and sanity, unlike other school districts around. Let schools out....take the kids to Walmart to suck on the carts!

I'm with Jarhead!

How long does it take to get the test results back on the two "Suspected" cases?

If 600 people were dying each day from this, the whole country would shut down and the virus would be attacked with every capability known to man. But when drinking alcohol and driving kills that many people a day, we open a liquor store somewhere.

You know BG, it is pretty sad when I get the breaking news from your blog first! Sure appreciate you. Also "heard" NW was a confirmed case. And a probable one in B-port. Anyone hear the same thing?

3:43 p.m. You make to much sense to be commenting here.

In answer to your question, it takes anywhere from 48-96 hours to get a test back confirming Swine Flu. The first test, for Type A flu, is done locally, but all Type A results are then sent off to determine whether they are Swine, so that takes a minimum of 48 hrs under the best circumstances. We can't test locally for Swine. That is only done at a select few major labs.

I had a ham sandwich for lunch.

Am I in trouble?

DISD students are at minimal risk. They have built up a natural resistance to swine flu due to long-term exposure to Speedo Man.

3:46 do you even have a child in DISD? Parents were notified via email and text message. I am thankful for the prompt action and the common sense approach. Thank you DISD!

First test is for Influenza A. If positive (Suspected), it is sent to local health departments for 2nd, but different test. If positive (Probable), sent to CDC in Atlanta which is the only place to test for the actual Swine Flu. Also, other "close contacts" are tested and quarantined. If second test is positive (Confirmed), then lots of people react. The CDC is way backed up right now. What is usually 48 hours for the process once received there is now 4-6 days. This is why the TCHD advised FWISD to close.

WHAT IS UP WITH THE "IMPORTANT-WISE REGIONAL SWINE FLU TREATMENT"????????????????
They make it sound like WRHS is a resort and you can only come play IF you say "mother may I" to the right moron! They are only providing medication and treatment to ADMITTED patients as determined by staff?????? I took a kid with leg pain the the ER and they told me he had pneumonia and they're leaving our pig-flu epidemic in thier hands? Coker-Hawkins offers a prearranged funeral plan that we might all want to check into.

I think I have SARS. Is it still around?

It has been confirmed Jimmie Dean has contracted the swine flu.

4:17; not sure what you are talking about. I work at Wise Regional, and we are treating everyone who needs to be treated by medical parameters just as we always do. Not sure what your ranting is all about!

How bout Jarhead blows me!

4:17 - Coker-Hawkins - NO THANKS!.....only greed in that bunch. Jones Family Funeral Home has similar plans.

........ good family, good funeral home, just plain good folks. They will find their place with the grieving families of Wise County.

Just nice caring people!

Hawkins needs some competition. It is WAY past time!!

I read "The Stand" for the first time back in 1978 - it was my first experience with a Stephen King book...I didn't buy it. My parents did, and they couldn't get through it. My Dad said it made him barf.

I read it....I saw the mini-series many times......I bought the unabridged version of The Stand.

Sometimes, when I am all by myself, I pretend that's what it would be like if everyone around me suddenly croaked.......I could keep myself fairly occupied.....

4:31, have you read today's update and seen the announcement titled "IMPORTANT" that focuses on WRHS? That is what the other poster is commenting on.

Hey 3:43 that would mean 210,000 people are killed in alcohol related deaths on our highway each year. Did you fail math class in high school, or are you just an overly dramatic person? I think you moved your decimal place one to far to the right. Glad you didn't take the Math TAKS test today.

My Gawd people, why can't you all see,we need to dig bomb shelters, stockpile food, buy extree battrees, boil water, tear up fresh linens into strips and have indiscriminate sex before it's too late....Oh my Gawd what was that...somethings on the roof...hello...hello......

Something is wrong when we are advertising for local funeral homes....Even if this is terribly serious we all need to calm down.

3:43 needs to rethink her comment. She had her way Barry would be out of work.

6:01 You need to better informed or quit sucking on sour grapes, they have tainted your better judgment.

Coker-Hawkins is still the same caring and professionally run funeral home it has always been.

WTF mate...

Ahem.....
Someone needs to buy 3:43 a calculator and teach them how to use Google so they can obtain a few FACTS.
.
.
365 days x 600 = 219,000.
.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration In 2006, there were 13,470 fatalities in crashes involving a
driver with a BAC of .08 or higher which was 32% of the total traffic
fatalities for the year.
.
.
13,470 / 365 = 36.9041096.
.
Even by Wise County math 37 (I rounded up) alcohol related fatalities per day is SIGNIFICANTLY fewer than 600.
.
I am SOOOOOOO glad people like you dislike me.
