I Kinda Want To Buy This

The sub-headline that is difficult to read says: "Because the kids are smarter, stronger, and better looking than yours. And they prove it every Friday night."

They forgot to say richer, so they can recruit athletes.

Amen, 9:59.

I don't know, but that boy standing in the middle doesn't look that cute to me!

You don't have to recruit when everybody whose is worth a crap or has money wants to move to your district no matter what. Not that it doesn't happen b/c it does but even without it they would probably still be better than most places.

They have created an empire. Way to go Southlake.

This cover, in a way, is Texas Monthly pretty much bashing African Americans and Hispanics. They're better looking? Not really. I live in Southlake. Nice looking people and not so nice looking people just like anywhere else. They are, though, almost all white. Smarter? Nah. Lots of smart folks and kids in Southlake. But extract the same socioeconomic subset from any other high school or adult population in other communities in the DFW area and you get the same good grades, the same smarts. Better in football. Maybe so. They've proven to be pretty darn good. But the reason is they run the same plays through pee wee, middle school and high school. They are very disciplined compared to other teams. Not necessarily faster or better athletes. And the kids by and large are able to focus on football, parents pay for training, they have good facilities, etc.

A majority of homeowners in the Southlake area couldn't pull a $100.00 bill out of their pocket if they had to. Pay check to pay check is how they live and playing "keep-up" is the name of the game. The students maybe "all that" but let's see how they're doing in about 15 years and compare them to students who have been brought up in the real world. Southlake can have it, who cares!

those three kids on the cover are far from model status. ive seen more attrive kids in chico

and they cant be all that smart in southlake - i remmeber lat year the big cheerleading scandal .... how stupid.

My better half is from Southlake; her family is still mystified that Wise Co. folk treat them like outsiders. She told one of my friends wives the other day that she couldn't believe she would by groceries in Wal-Mart...later when the conversation turned to fashion she began throwing down some brand/store names that I could tell my friend's wife was not familiar with. I could also tell she she felt greatly humbled, I really felt terrible for her. I chastised my better half after our visit and she claimed she had no idea what I was talking about...at that moment I really wanted to give her a "here's your sign"!

Anonymous said...

WOW. So.... Football is more important than education and that makes them smarter, stronger, and better looking. Interesting......

The Devil, Are you married to MzChief? That kinda social snobbiness sounds like something she'd do.

They forgot to mention half will end up like David Von Erich.

SOUTHLAKE FOOTBALL ROCKS!

That would be "D" magazine, not "Texas Monthly".

I don't know what the big deal is about this. Communties like Southlake have existed for decades.

Plano, Highland Park, FW Trinity, Austin Westlake, Katy and Balsora have all taken their turn as the target of this same kind of article in the past. Its just that Southlake is THE story right now based on their success(as defined by some).

Somewhere down the road, Southlake will be knocked off the top of the hill and replaced by the next hot community. I'm thinking this will happen when the sub-prime mortgage fallout really hits the jumbo mortgage sector hard and a lot of those big homes in Southlake end up with "for sale" and/or "forclosed" signs on them.

...and the most confusing Von Erich reference ever goes to Anon 12:01.

So, half of them will end up rasslin' under the title of "The Yellow Rose of Texas", then end up dead from a heart attack in Japan caused by ruptured intestines resulting from acute enteritis???

you're old if you remember David Von Erich. We get lots of Southlake kids at the private school my kids attend. They're not so smart....

If all you fat ugly people in Wise County would not reproduce.....the world would be a better place.

I've hated Southlake since the 80s, when they stayed in 3A just long enough to screw us after they'd topped the 3A enrollment number barriers. Haaaaate.

I will never forget how 'dirty' Southlake played basketball in the early 1990's - - Dane Parker from Southlake kicking DHS player Todd McCormick in the head as he scrambled for the bball comes to my mind everytime I see one of those darn Dragon stickers on the back of a SUV....

Just exactly what does David Adkisson (Von Erich) have to do with Southlake Carroll. He and his brothers were all graduates of Lake Dallas though they attended school in Denton when they were younger. One of my friends used to drive a Denton ISD bus route out to Shady Shores in the late '60's where he picked them up every day.

As for winning, Southlake has had a decided edge over other schools for a number of years now, because there have been so many people (especially former college and/or current pro atheletes or coaches) who moved into the community expressly so their talented kids could be in the program. Add to that the fact that the vast majority of the student body comes from upper middle class families, whose parents are, by and large, college educated and have and demand high expectations for their children, and you have the ingredients for a successful program whether it be football or academics. As someone else mentioned, Southlake is very similar to Highland Park, Westlake, and maybe a couple of other communities that have similar demographics with the few minority students they have tending to be upper middle class themselves (eg. Trey Newton, son of Nate.

IF Dane Johnson kicked someone, either

1 - he didn't do it on purpose
2 - he was protecting himself.
or
3 - he was a teenager who temporarily lost his temper. (But, I doubt it!)

Of all the kids I've taught and coached, there is not a better one.

It is not true that Southlake manipulated numbers to "stay down" in 3A. The UIL realigns every 2 years. In the second year of the realignment period, there is no guarantee that any school in any division is not too big or too small.

Southlake turned in their correct #s. At that time, they were growing by 30% every year. So, if they turned in correct #s, by the time of the next alignment they would've grown 60%. But, they weren't the only school in that position, then or now.

The kids in southlake expect to win, to excel, to be the best in the world. And their parents have the resources to help them get there.

When I taught in Wise county, some of my kids didn't even expect to ever travel out of the county. We sometimes get what we expect.

On You Dragons!!!

This article just proves that people in other towns (other than those in Wise County) know that the only way to be successful in life is to be either a high school football player or cheerleader.

Anonymous said...

It was actually a good article. It was interesting to read how the dynasty was built. I do not live there! (My son plays football for Decatur.)

Anonymous said...

Wow, this thread has really blown up. Southlake is what it is, so let it be. Honestly everyone is gonna have their biased opinions on Southlake Carroll, for athletics, as well as the town and people. I guess this is what the Blog is for but some stuff just cracks me up to a point..... I gues just asking huh?

Anonymous said...

I think it's sad how so many long time citizens (I'm referring to Decatur because I've lived here long enough - but it happens everywhere) put everything they have into high school football, when our teachers are leaving left and right, a kid is arrested at the high school every couple of weeks or so (last year), Decatur HS administrators are planting 'moles' in classrooms just so someone else is accountable for a few teachers not enforcing rules, kids fail TAKS and don't graduate every year...the list goes on.

Where are your priorities?

Thanks to the Messenger, the academians also make the cover in the spring for placement on the All Wise Academic Team, but that's not enough.

But, so often we place far too much importance on football, yet we say the focus is on academics.

It's time to get back to the 3Rs.

10:44 it doesn't matter what you look like when you can play football like that kid

7:26 p.m.----Dane Johnson did kick a Decatur player in the 4th period of a basketball game between Soutlake and Decatur in 1993. How do I know this...I was sitting two feet away when it happened. They both went out of bounds after a loose ball where I was sitting and as Dane stood up he gave the Decatur player a cheap shot with his foot. I can also tell you why it happened...Southlake was getting their butts handed to them for the second district game in a row between the two schools and he was frustrated. No matter how great you think he was, he was just a young cocky punk at that time. Hopefully he has turned into a nice young contributing member of society by now. By they way...I don't know who made the original statement, but I will certainly back it up as TRUE!

4:50 and 10:23, You're still bitching about something a kid did in a high school basketball game some 15 years ago? Here's a piece of advice for you two, let it go and move on with your sad little lives. I don't know anything about Southlake but I'm sure they don't give two shits about what happened in a high school basketball game some 15 years ago. With adults like you in Decatur it's no wonder Southlake's kids are smarter and better than yours.

Boy, a whole lot of bitter envy of a community that has produced an exemplary academic, athletic and commercial success. The only common element to both Southlake and Wise Co is they're both located in Texas.
