You know, a lot of these presidents with low approval ratings in their first term never got a second term. And those who actually won reelection had low approval ratings at points too distant from the following presidential election for it to really matter (in other words, there was plenty of time to make up for lost ground.....Obama only has about a year to go, and that's not enough time).
As for second term Clinton and Bush's low approval ratings, almost all second term presidents see their popularity dip A LOT, mostly because they've overstayed their welcome after about six years!!! Can you imagine how bad (hypothetically speaking) Obama would fare with the public in a second term?
I don't understand this low rating. He has shown such outstanding leadership in the three wars, vibrant economy, and making america "liked" by the rest of the world. Wait a minute.. Oh...
I think I agree with 9:35 Anonymous. Karl Rove always had the right idea with Bush in this regard: play to your base. If the base doesn't show up on election day, you're pretty well screwed.
It looks to me as though President Obama has really undermined his base. The idea that they're going to get excited about havnig a democrat further continue Bush's policies instead of a Republican continue Bush's policies seems... very optimistic.
9:35, I fear how bad the public would fare with Hobammy having a second term. What Skippy didn't show you was that Hobammy has the lowest approval rating of any president at this stage of his presidency.
The only approval ratings that matter are those on election day. It's a reflection of Liberals' concerns that they are resorting to the "Compared to so-and-so, he's not doing so bad." The most relevant comparison that should worry Obama is when members of his own party compare him to Jimmy Carter. Want a really accurate approval poll? Think about who's looking forward to next year's election, and who is dreading it.
Who else would you vote for? Same goes with Republicans in general. They play to their base in the primaries, but when the general election comes they don't have to, because who else is the ignorant, illiterate, 4,000-year-old-earth-believin', abortion hatin' prayer-in-schools moron going to vote for?
Another way to look at it is he's the only self- proclaimed black man to have a rating that low. 100% of our black presidents have had an approval rate dip dramatically in his first term.
@Rage: Since I'm voting in Texas- where a Democrat has not won a statewide race since Dan Morales in the Nineties - it hardly matters. Obama is going to lose Texas by more than a single vote, and I'll likely vote for a 3rd party candidate.
It's in close states where Obama won in 2008 - Iowa and Florida and North Carolina - where it seems like an invigorated base might swing things for him.
What do ya'll think the rest of the country will do when offered another folksy Texas governor? You may not realize how disenchanted the other states are with Bush and will be with Perry.
3:07, I'm impressed that you have talked to everyone in all the other 56 states and gotten their opinion on Bush. You must be a busy man. Does George Soros sign your paychecks?

I can't say I approve of him right now.
