Oh My. I saw that Leslie Nielson passed away on Facebook. But, it didn't dawn on me who it was until now.
Anyone who knows only Leslie Nielsen's work from Airplane! or the Naked Gun movies miss out on a lot of the humor. He played so many serious dramatic roles beforehand that when he appeared (along with other "serious dramatic actors" Peter Graves, Robert Stack and Lloyd Bridges) in Airplane! it was a seismic shock. The closest equivalent would be Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder.

Oh, it's a big building in the middle of the town square, with lots of windows and air conditioners, but that't not important now...

I remember a few years back when he did a serious commercial for some senior citizen service (maybe it was life insurance, a hearing aid, etc.)..........and I had a hard time taking the commercial seriously because it was Leslie Nielsen doing the advertisement!
Yet he was a serious actor back in the day....
I will miss Leslie. Rest in peace my friend until we meet again.
