Random Tension. That I Love.

“Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun got into a heated exchange at a postgame news conference Saturday with a freelance journalist and political activist who questioned why the coach of a public university was making $1.6 million in tough economic times.” From last night.

WOW!
That coach HONESTLY believes he is worth, thus entitled, to 8% of the $12 million brought into the university due to the basketball program. No where does the coach mention if the $12 million is gross or net. The coach also fails to mention how much the school loses in tuition and fees due to basketball players attending the university on scholarships.

Can you imagine how FURIOUS the board of a publicly held corporation would be if the head of some division at Wal-mart, Exxon, Johnson and Johnson was paid 8% of the funds generated by their division?

Academic and professional sports and the people who administer and participate in sports have screwed up values when it comes to sports.

9:52, not much business sense, eh? I GLADLY rather than FURIOUSLY pay 8% to a top performer who generates the other 92% for me.

The number of scholarships is limited. I'm not sure about basketball, but in baseball most teams divide the scholarships among players-not too many get a full scholarship, and it is common for kids to get a quarter or half scholarship. There are always several players on a team who get no scholarship money at all.

And Mz, I can't agree with your balket statement that people who are involved in academic sports have "screwed up values when it comes to sports." My son's university baseball team was in town this weekend for two double-headers. He had his accounting work with him, and spent many hours on the bus ride working on it. While our conversations obviously included baseball talk, we spent a great deal more time discussing his academic work.

He made the decision to leave the junior college he was attending as soon as he earned an associate's degree in December(even though he was not having to pay any tuition) because he had gotten all he could academically. He loves baseball, and he loves playing, but he's also academically driven. I'm pleased that he's taken advantage of every opportunity to balance his life.

The women's coach there makes as much. Look, all parties involved decide what's worth and what's not. Take that logic and apply to home sales. Think 6% of a family's sweat and equity is a bit much for a realtor to skim off the top simply because the realtor has a license and might open a door and spend a few hours selling a house? Think a famous actor or actress deserves 10, 20 or 30 percent of gross receipts for a film? In the end, if the school, the fans, the students, the State of Connecticut, etc. agree on it, then end of story. That little snot reporter has been watching too much liberal television. SOMEBODY needs to tell him and all the rest to shut up, get off the "there should be no wealth in this country" bandwagon. Or pretty soon, people in uniform will be showing up at your door, too, Mzchief, to make sure you don't have more than what an average person is supposed to have in this country. Heck, maybe they will "redistribute" your computer to someone less fortunate.

Once again The Creep puts her big ole foot right in her mouth. Shouldn't she be in church right now, frowning and smirking at someones dress?

6 Diet Trends You Should Never Try (from msn homepage talking ablout the master cleanse)

"Dieters who try it end up losing lean body mass, and then when they are 'cleansed' and go back to their old ways, they gain fat. They end up being a fatter version of their old selves."

Mzchief, your comments are typical of someone who can't accomplish sh*t and resents someone who can get things done.

I thought everyone with the last name Calhoun was black.

That reminds me: I've never met a white person named Washington.

I'm sure the coach makes this salary because that is what the college board agreed to pay him. What is wrong with you idiots? I'd take a salary like that if it were offered to me too. Don't blame the ones in the job...they are just lucky to be the receipient, and those who PAY that kind of salary should be the ones who are fired! But....can ya fire the board? don''t think so.

"You idiots"?
The only one on here who questioned the salary of the coach is Mzchief...

What's odd is that Calhoun is considered mainstream and in control compared with guys like Bobby Knight, who made similar money and regularly cussed his players and the media all the way to the bank.

BTW, Bob Knight may be the worst analyst ever to appear on ESPN (with the noted exception of Emmitt Smith).

Hey Mzcrap,
Paying 8% for 92% is not sound business? You really showed your ass on this one. Get off the computer and go back to the mirror to tell yourself how wonderful you are.

I have some employees on commission. I wish they only were being paids 8%. What a moron.
