I don't think people around here thought much about the economy. It was kind of hands off, but now Decatur residents are being laid off. And analysts are speculating that 2009 will be much worse. Happy Holidays!
ok... I know it sounds harsh to do it right before christmas, but flip it around. you are the primary bread winner for your family, you think you have a stable job, you cut back at christmas but still take care of everyone in your family and maybe buy your kids that wii they have been waiting on for 2 years. Then you get back from your vacation only to find out you dont have a job. Which is worse... before or after?
3:46, companies can't pay people if they don't have customers. Maybe you should direct your brain fart comment to those who have stopped or slowed trading with POCO, forcing their hand. If you had hired ten people to work in your corn field, and then your customers came up and said we can't buy corn from you any more, do you just keep paying your ten people out of the goodness of your heart at the expense of all your hard earned equity, savings, reserve until you're dried up, too? Last time I checked, the average worker is not the one who took the risk, made the sacrifices and is on the hook for loans, etc. when sales drop.
They just laid 130 conductors/workers off at Union Pacific Rialroad here in Ft.Worth with more to come. No notice other than goodbye and Merry Christmas. Mmmm I did not hear of any management being laid off?
AHole 346, maybe the poster was meaning to say, they coulda waited a few days before the axe. And you are right, if the customers are not buying, nobody can pay to produce. No question there, but more finess might could have been utilized. You and the sky falling AHole are either alike, or the same. Merry Christmas. Good Will to Men, Etc....
So Sorry 3:46, meant this to go to the real AHole number 4:27. Got screwed up on the post times. We both know four2seven is an AHole. May God help him/her/them/it. A closed mind is a screwball Conservative thing.
They pulled the trigger today but all affected employees can choose to stay and be fully compensated until Jan. 9. This showed compassion for people affected with the holidays coming and gives them 3 extra weeks to make other plans before the generous severance package kicks in. What's been happening in the US markets and the world markets just hit home in Decatur too.
Sad as they may be layoffs may or may not be truly related to the state of an economy- sometimes decision makers get spooked by the news, look at their org. and start finding people to cut.
4:27 sounds like typical poco royality.I worked for poco in the hole for 5 years they are a company that sacrifices good people for the bottom line on a regular basis.Laying people off at christmas seems typical poco protocol. There are a lot of good folks Im not...hard working folks and to see them nixed at christmas is shamefull.I wish you people well.....and poco royality can go to....rhyms with well.
I am sure that I will be attack for this opinion but ...
What POCO have done to their employees is reason that Organized Labor is a critical part to middle America. With a Union it would have been done fairly and equitable.

I think they better wait, 10:05AM....several high school stadiums are being testing for high lead content....one in Wichita Falls, Ector County and Birdville
All you fine people that hate these layoffs, I'm sure you have NOT stopped eating out at restaurants, NOT slowed down your spending and credit card use, and NOT done anything that might cause other local businesses to see a slowdown and therefore cause others to be laid off? Still buying new cars and trucks? You wouldn't want to be responsible for anyone being laid off now, right?
We all just pitched in to give money to help GM die a slower death, so why not all pitch in and give money to POCO to keep those jobs. Let's have a city council meeting and write a check for a few million to POCO to make up for the loss of revenue they have experienced. We did it for GM. So what if it won't change POCO's position in the longer term. It won't for GM either. So why GM but not POCO? Guess you all REALLY won't put your money where your "evil company" comments are.
"Anonymous at 11:53 said... I think they better wait, 10:05AM....several high school stadiums are being testing for high lead content....one in Wichita Falls, Ector County and Birdville"
As long as the little snow flakes don't eat the stuff they'll be A OK.
The reason I based that comment was in response to Anon 12:51.
"Heard that Hanson laid off the older employees, those that had been there 20-25 years. Job prospects slim to none for them, not old enough to retire."
12:51 PM
I honestly do not think they did that but you never know. Texas is a "Right to Work State" which means in English ... Companies can fire/lay off/terminate your employment for ANY REASON with NO RECOURSE. And you can bet this does happen.
Hearing now that James Wood is cutting back. Having to move long time managers back into sales positions just to keep them in a job. Wow... that is just too close to home.
As someone that has been on both sides of the fence, it is my experence that companies that are mismanaged have the most trouble. It happens when the people at the top lose sight of the basic principles that put them on top. If you examine the amount of actual labor that goes into making a product, it is a very small part of the cost. But this is where the cost is cut first.
Didn't spend much time on the management side of the fence, did you? Direct labor is a third of the manufacturing costs. When including overhead, it only becomes one fourth. Direct labor, production output, the consumption of supplies and utilities, and even staff positions were a part of the cut. All major cost contributors were affected in this layoff.
2:42 PM, I spent several years in Management for a large corperation and it was loaded with overhead that did nothing except make charts, graphs and attend meetings that was about as productive as a sack of Bull Hocky. This is the things that need to be cut first. Also the perks that the company exectives gets. If a company keeps doing the same thing as before but lays off a lot of its workforce, then they had too many people on the payroll to starrt with. Goes back to what I said about mismanagement!
You people have no idea, (nor need to know), what other cost cutting measures have been taken at Poco, besides the layoffs.
Layoffs might be a public interest story. Other measures are private business.
I crack up at those that rail against the company. This is the same company that has spent the better part of 40 years keeping a big piece of Wise Co. employed. A company that has worked hard to make layoffs an extremely rare action during its history. And a company that doesn't get much benefit of the doubt from here and others... even when every other mfg. company is having tough times.
You seem to be "In the Know' on this company. Would you/can you answer a question or two?
Did they lay off the most junior person on up?
Do the people laid off have recall rights.
Did they lay off Mangers & Supervisors?
And on a personal note and in my humble opinion your comment ...
"You people have no idea, (nor need to know)" is condescending and total Bull. Workers have the need and should have the right to know exactly what is going on from a company they help build over their life time.
companys are not there to provide jobs, they are there to make money, if your job is not needed anymore or becomes unprofitable they the co. should get rid of you. the problem is its not easy to fire anyone anymore, so the company has to do it any way they can, even if its Christmas.
Is everyone here stupid? People are talking bad about a company that works hard for its community or at least employs people of the community. Does every Co. have to be bad? Poco is laying off now so that they hope not to have lay off more later, they are choosing people the way every other mid-level company does, "by trying to keep the impact of the layoffs from biting them in the ass when the the economy gets better". Every mid-level business does this.
Why layoff at Christmas, Fiscal Year people. Cut costs to try and keep from laying off even more.....
Stop blaming the company, you are reading this on a computer that your company helped you pay for or it is a company computer.
Remote Controls recorded message brought to you by "Doctors for Asbestos" and your friendly German Nazi Dr. Mengele "better living by gassing people." Now here is a guy/girl that would sell you out to protect themselves. NOW GET YOUR COLLECTIVE A$$ES BACK TO WORK PEOPLE. snap ...snap ...snap ..
Toyota Motor Corp slashed its earnings forecast Monday, projecting that it would report its first annual operating loss for the fiscal year through March - its first such loss since it began reporting results in 1941.
Battered by falling demand from consumers around the world and a surging yen, Toyota and other Japanese automakers have been reducing earnings outlooks and cutting workers.
One auto executive was quoted as saying. "With Anon @ 4:44 beating his pud". We need to pay these workers in rice it is all there fault.
Anon drop your little pud and remove head from ass. Its not the workers. Let me guess it was the workers fault at POCO too?
I don't use pie charts, they're not descriptive enough. I use various trend analyses, bar charts, x bar and R statistical charts...things that provide a view into the workings of the company and can be used to make good decisions. Sometimes, those decisions involve reigning things back, conserving cash, and unfortunately, laying off good workers. Poco is probably doing the best they can in a horrid economy.

I have heard that the Chico Hanson plant laid off several employees as well....
Why would companies do this at Christmas? How awful.
Heard that Hanson laid off the older employees, those that had been there 20-25 years. Job prospects slim to none for them, not old enough to retire.
It has been real for a while now. FIL was laid off almost a month ago.
The sky is falling, the sky is falling.
Out of some 350 employees, that's a prety hard hit. Unfortunate that they pulled this right before Christmas. Yet another corporate brain fart.

About four years too much Republican rule. However, if a rich person can get richer........this is a good thing.
What is the difference between Conservative Log Cabin Republicans, and Conservative Republican Wordkyle?

Rest my case. This recession is the real deal.
