Why Have I Never Heard . . .

. . . of Billy Joe Shaver but have sneaking suspicion many Wise Countians are familiar with his work?

Note to Self: Don't hang out Papa Joe's. (Story.)

This guy is good friends with Robert Duvall..the actor. Has had small parts in several of his movies. I think the Second Hand Lions and the Apostle were the two movies.

I don't get it. Why should we be familiar with his work?

Billy Joe is the real deal when it comes to country music - REAL country music. Not that crap they feed you on your pop country radio stations. Thank the lords above and below that there are still a few real outlaws in country music. Maybe you're not supposed to carry a gun onto the property of a bar, but good thing he was able to defend himself. Any jackass that knows anything about Billy Joe should've known he'd have a gun on him anyhow. You don't play honky tonks all your life and not carry something to defend yourself in a serious fight. Bless Billy Joe and good luck to him. I'm sure Willie will put together a great benefit concert to help with Billy's defense fund.

The story you linked fails to mention the fact that the guy Billy Joe shot followed him out of the bar with a knife.

He is a Texas songwriter. He is from the Willie, Waylon, Jerry Jeff, Gary P. Nunn, Townes Van Zandt era. I believe he wrote "She Never Spoke Spanish To Me."

Here is an interesting post from another website about the incident.

"Shaver's attorney stated that Coker had threatened Shaver and that Shaver shot in self-defense. Witnesses interviewed by police report hearing Shaver saying "where do you want it?" and then, after the shot was fired, "Tell me you are sorry" and "No one tells me to shut up." Coker told police the attack was unprovoked.[8]"

"After unsuccessfully attempting to surrender to police in Austin, TX, who were unaware of the warrant, Shaver turned himself in at McLennan County Jail in Waco, TX on Tuesday, April 3. He was released after an hour on $50,000 bond and gave his scheduled performance at Waterloo Records in Austin that evening."

Does he sound like a true Texan or what?

His story - including this last incident - is on Wikipedia already.

A quote he wrote for Kinky: "May the God of your choice bless you."

Love his good country music. I think he is the real deal and it's a shame that some idiot can change your life in the blink of an eye.

I can't believe anyone who is a bonafide Texan doesn't know who Billy Joe Shaver is. Among the better known songs he has written are, "I'm Just an Ole Lump of Coal", "Ride Me Down Easy", "I'm Gonna Live Forever", "Georgia on a Fast Train", and if you have ever listened to Waylon Jenning's most famous CD, Honky Tonk Heroes, Billy Joe wrote 9 of the 12 songs on there including the title song.
