Random Thursday Morning Thoughts

Revised due to duplication error
  • I got hauled off to the doctor against my will by Mrs. LL yesterday. Maybe its just a sudden drop in blood sugar but this is getting a little tricky to diagnose. But she seemed really scared yesterday so I went along.
  • Listened to in house mini-concert of someone playing the recorder last night. I didn't even know that instrument was still around.
  • Women are going to be allowed to fight on the front lines in our military. I suppose how it is implemented will be the key. (But radio guy Mark Davis was blowing a gasket over the subject this morning.)
  • I'm not certain, but I think the current hot spot (and a spot which is ripe for abuse) for Plaintiffs lawyers it patent litigation with ground zero being the federal courts in East Texas.
  • I bet Jay Ratliff is going to look pretty good on the Field Sobriety Testing but that dang blood test might doom him.
  • Foggy 380 this morning
  • There was a story yesterday of the countless hours Manti Te'o spent on the phone to his fake girlfriend (as documented by phone bills.)  As nutty as that makes Te'o, it also makes the perpetrator at the other end a nutcase. And the story got weirder at Te'o's lawyer now claims the fake girlfriend was voiced by a guy.
  • I've never thought of this: Is there any actual law that prevents a man from going in a public woman's bathroom or visa-versa?
  • What's the current status of the Waggonner Mansion in Decatur? And what about the huge house at College Street and Hale which seems to have been vacant for years?
  • We've had "An Another" but it involves a man. And, unfortunately, a former Baylor pitcher.
  • It would drive me nuts to be a school superintendent (two stories about them in the Update today.) Your fate is determined by a small group of school board members every couple of years who each have their own agendas.
  • A story came out yesterday that the national Democrats are now focusing on Texas with  the chance that it will soon become a blue state. If so, experts believe, "the Electoral College math is simple. We won’t be talking about Ohio, we won’t be talking about Florida or Virginia, because it won’t matter. If Texas is bright blue, you can’t get to two-seventy electoral votes. The Republican Party would cease to exist."
  • Some tried to take shots at Hillary yesterday to get their soundbite or a question on the news but she fought back like crazy.  Heck, she might be the Democratic nominee in three years.

Yeah, good instincts on the patent litigation thing. Except it's been the "hot spot" for years now. So much so that This American Life did a story on it 18 months ago, and one of the law reviews at SMU held a symposium focusing specifically on the EDTX and patent litigation nearly two years ago. Not exactly cutting edge commentary on your part.

The episode of This American Life, if you're interested, is here:

Hispanics are naturally conservative and we were once a blue state. These things go in cycles.

Republicans are their own worst enemy right now. They misread the polls.

You can never be a winner in the party of purported ideals when the other side is buying more hearts and minds than you can win.

Truth be told, Democrat or Republican, I'm not sure either one has our best interests at heart. Seriously, take guns and babies off the table and tell me the difference again.

Blood alcohol levels are arbitrary and .08 was someone pandering to one of the MADD hags.

Women on the front lines, to some degree they already have been. Opening jobs to a group of people you aknowledge as being physically weaker (look at the physical fitness standards) is beyond idiotic. They aren't going to raise the standards so now we have an even weaker military to look forward to.

Just a matter of time before it comes out that Te'o is into poles. If I had dreams of playing in the NFL I would want to keep that a secret too.

I thought "hanging out" in the ladies room was disorderly conduct?

Female teacher predators = awesome
Male teacher pederasses = bad

Just hire an escort. Cheaper in the long run

Hillary should have been the nominee five years ago.

Hawt middle aged woman's number one job is to keep her "meal ticket" alive. But be wary if she whispers "Go towards the light".

And it's not if but when Texas goes blue and the Republican party is already dead thanks to the cancer boil of the Tea Party, they just refuse to see it.

Don't be afraid of women fighting on the front lines. We are on the front lines of every other aspect of life. The men are typically in the background doing not much of anything. We take care of you at home, I'm certain we can take care you on the battlefield.

The house on College street is actually occupied and was on the Tour of Homes this year - so sad to see it fall apart

Rex Kramer said...

In all honesty why would you "be dreaming of a "Blue Texas"?

I am genuinely interested in hearing an answer

We may be lacking, but generally speaking we are much better off than our friends in the north east and the left coast.

Am I bragging on the current residents of the governor's mansion?

Nope, but they have managed to not screw things up too bad.

the problem with Hillary isn't her looks, her age, or her hillbilly hound dog husband. As Sec'y of State, she is supposed to be an expert at dealing with difficult people and touchy situations. Do we really want our leader to be someone who "explodes with rage" when answering questions from political opponents in her own country?

Funny line from BaDD Radio yesterday - Bob Sturm: "Two recent DWI arrests of Cowboys' nose tackles is justification for a return to the 4-3 defense."

The data input is logical:
Zero nose tackles = zero arrests of nose tackles. Beep-boop-bop!

Texas has one of the best economies in the nation if not THE BEST. This is accomplished under a conservative state government yet how many of you are wishing for a blue state? I've never heard such a case of bigotry in my entire life. You liberals are some serious idiots. I'm for a proverbial thinning of the herd. By that I mean a civil war with the left.

You know, Republicans will exist in local elections in rural counties. We may be blue overall, but it's only because of the big cities. The rednecks in the boonies still won't vote for a black or brown person. In fact, many rural counties went Republican for the first time when Obama was on the ticket. Galveston went Republican for the first time since Reconstruction. And that pattern was repeated all over the state--in many elections local democrats won but Obama overwhelmingly lost, even.

But we know, it's not about race...

Anonymous said...

In response to Mr. Kramer -

Why do I dream of a Blue Texas? I dream of that because the once proud Republican party has been run into the ditch by its extreme right wing and the billionaires who care only about keeping their taxes as low as possible. Just look at the loons that participated in the Republican primary. The two sane ones, Romney and Huntsman, were either forced out (Hunstman) or forced to adopt extreme positions (Romney)which led to his loss.

You are correct, Texas is doing ok and our legislators deserve some credit for that. But I'd give even more credit to $100 oil.

Thanks for asking.

Sure wimmins should be on the front lines- the front line of serving food in the chow hall.

Sorry, but most wimmins don't have the "adapt and overcome" attitude that men have developed over thousands of years. It's not a bad thing, it's just one of the differences (sp?) between men and wimmin.

Rex Kramer said...

@10:13

The education statistics are skewed because we don't give genuine consideration to our number of students for whom english is their second language.

This is not me commenting on their race but they are entering the education system handicapped and that slows the learning process. Throw in some standardized testing and of course it appears that we are behind. I would respectfully wager that our "best and brightest" would measure up against those from any of the other 49 states.

I think a similar argument can be made about poverty levels, health care, and insurance. I also think we tend to be fat and happy.

Happy doesn't mean the same thing as healthy so statistically we would lag in that category as well. Thats a societal problem not a political one.

We were sold a bad bill of goods with deregulation for our utilities but thus far we have not had the level of problems other states have experienced.

I love Texas and as I expressed in my earlier thoughts, we aren't without our flaws. Relatively speaking though, I can't think of another place that I would rather live.

So my original question still stands, what would be the benefit of us becoming a "Blue State", more specifically what would they make better?

mzchief said...

I think they got the soundbite from Hillary. Her rant of "What difference at this point does it make!!!???" most definitely was the choreographed soundbite Hillary wanted to give them.

BTW...It does make a difference if people care whether or not their government is HONEST with the public and/or truly intends to prevent another attack on an embassy and save American lives.

Neighbor's son worked in PA for the Obama campaign. He is a Rutger's grad student, nerdy as heck and "sweet". According to his mom, campaign director instructed him to dress in cowboy boots, jeans and hat to parade around PA as a semi-conservative Texas democrat with a heavy drawl to convince the northerners there are democrats in Texas. Clearly, it worked.

And, I have a client with a deceased daughter that was a spot on ringer for Monica Lewinsky. Interestingly, the daughter was Clinton's high school/early college girlfriend in Arkansas. Until her untimely death from an obscure illness, she had almost constant contact with the ex-Pres. and the Misses. Her sister, also a client, worked as an ambassador to a central american country during the Clinton Admin. The family speaks quite highly of the ex-Pres. No wonder Hillary is so uptight...

855 (that guy) nailed it. Republicans are at a disadvantage because Democrats can buy more votes and tell people they aren't responsible for their own situation in life. As for Republicans hissing and spitting about their own demise and Democrats taking over the political spectrum, STFU and VOTE for REPUBLICAN candidates rather than gritch about the Republican candidate not being the "ideal" Repubican. Republicans continually shot themselves in the foot then whine and cry about the Democrats being better at politics.

Texas is going Democrat Party real soon. The latest Texas Education Agency has these numbers: 50% hispanic, 13% black, 31% white and 6% other. Of these 59% are economically disadvantaged. These are the future voters. As Alexander Tytler said "in a democracy the voters will vote for the candidates that promise the most handouts from the public treasury. As goes Greece and Spain, so goes the United States.

The states of New York, California and Texas will make the U.S. a one party country.
