Went Shopping For A Kid's Softball Bat Last Night

Ok, this was not in the kid's section.

But some company has figured out that there's a handful of adult rec league softball players who can really crush the ball -- much to their ego's delight. Then they happen to be in the sporting goods store and see this thing and they think, "Man, this will make me legendary."

There is alot of technology in aluminum bats. If the kid has any illusions to play travel ball you are in the $175+ territory easy

Only a true ChrisChris would pay $300 for a bat that will be used in a rec league softball game. Most normally-functioning brains know that the difference is not the bat - it's the batter

Better have some gold in it for that price.

What's that saying?

Oh yeah, there's a sucker born every minute.

Hate aluminum. There is something about the solid feel of ash in your firm grip which cannot be replicated in metal. I breathe rapidly just thinking about it.

Closet is full of $500 drivers, but have a putter with more job security than my wife.

I see most of you don't play softball, or sports for that matter. If you go out to any softball game, recreational or not, you will see $200+ bats everywhere. Actually, if you go to any sporting event you will see high priced gear on every one of the better players. Some of it is for looks, but don't pretend you can't tell the difference between a pair of Adidas and the Shaq shoes at Wal Mart.

As far as the bats go; yes, you can tell a difference between the bat in the picture and a Wal-Mart bat. Even you non-athletic types will notice the first time you make contact.

If you or your kids want to be competitive, be ready to spend the money!

Of course the guy who buys that bat drinks cheap beer!

I bought the new Taylor Made driver for 400 dollars and my tee shots go a lot further out of bounds.

Cheap-ass.

I can't tell from the photo what brand it is. If it was a Demarini, you should have bought it. 300 is cheap.

Posers in softball league? Well, I declare!

It's not a Demarini, it's a P.T.Barnum.

10:31 sounds just like the ones that try and tell you that the Turf at DISD is for the kids.

Slo-pitch softball, while fun, is a joke as far as hitting is concerned.

I remember having to use restricted flight softballs because it was too easy to jack one over the fence.

And I also remember some of the goofy bat technology that didn't catch on like the bent handle bat and the bat with water in it.

Ohhh, I get it. It doesn't matter how good your natural born talents are it's the piece of equipment your sporting that makes you great.

The parents who spend this $$ are the ones who will live in Decatur with the next 4 generations of kids saying " Back in 82 I could hit a baseball a mile long"

I have coached girls fast pitch softball for the last 8 years now. This bat it a 2011 model Demarini CF4 fast pitch bat. It is a 50/50 bat, 50% composite 50% alumimum. I can say the bat does make a difference. You take a kid that hits the ball 150' with a cheap walmart bat she will hit the same ball with this bat 200'.

There is big money is softball these days. If that is an aluminum bat, $300 is a rip off. With the new technology in bats, composite is the way to go. I play mens tournament softball and I use the high dollar bats, but I never pay full price because there are lot's of places you can get the bats for discount prices. Never buy from the sporting goods stores like Academy or Sports Authority, they don't carry the best quality plus you can get better deals other places.

LMAO 1:13 so true!

Don't buy Demarini!!! Their quality diminished big time when they were bought by Wilson a few years back. The best brands to go with are either Worth, Miken or Mizuno. There is a difference!!!

It would be better to spend that kind of money on a banjo.

Uncle Ricco. Wanna come over and see how we Decatur folks can swing a bat?

I don't think there is anything more sad than a parent who doesn't keep things in perspective. What value are we teaching?

Anonymous said...

It's just one step from a $300 bat to using steroids...

The most expensive equipment makes the kid a winner?........well sometimes it works in the youth fair. Buy the most expensive animal (the one the judge will pick for the "winner")...results: a winning kid for the parents....a loser for humanity.....yep it goes on and we know the folks who do it..........LOSERS!

A family in Bridgeport is famous through the generations for this kind of thing.
