Thanks Barry for posting this!! I know without a doubt, that if it wasn't for our firefighters and most of them are VOLUNTEERS, that some people in my neighborhood, including myself would be sleeping somewhere else tonight!! These guys were HELL ON WHEELS today!!! Makes me want to donate a little more, a little more often!!! I seen real quick where the money goes!! It brought back an old thought from when I was younger. "What would you do if you had a fire, and no one showed up?? Thanks a million, guys!! Tony Jackson >> P.S. Joe D., I took plenty of pics. if you need some, lemme know!! LOL!!!
LETS PRAISE THE HIGH AND MIGHTY PAID DECATUR FIRE DEPT. MABEY OTHER DEPARTMENT RESPONSE TIMES WOULD BE BETTER IF THE CITIES COULD AFFORD TO PAY THEIR FIREFIGHTERS, I'M WAITING FOR THE CITY OF DECATUR TO DECIDE THAT THE PAID GUYS WILL ONLY RESPOND TO CALLS IN THE CITY LIMITS AND USE THE VOLUNTEERS TO RESPOND TO COUNTY CALLS THEN IT WILL BE BACK TO THE SAME DELAYED RESPONSE TIMES. THE ATTITUDE OF THE DECATUR FIRE DEPT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THAT THEY THINK THEY ARE BETTER THAN ANY OTHER DEPARTMENT NOW IT IS EVEN WORSE THE ONLY DEPARTMENT THEY CALL FOR HELP IS BRIDGEPORT, I PERSONALLY WOULD BE QUIET UPSET IF MY HOUSE BURNED DOWN BECAUSE THEY DIDNT CALL THE CLOSEST DEPT. FOR HELP BUT INSTED CALLED BRIDGEPORT FROM 25 MILES AWAY INSTED OF 7-10 MILES.
WIS COUNTY FIRE FIGHTER SHOULD HAVE FINISHED ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SO THEY WOULDNT LOOK STUPID WHEN THEY TRY TO RANT AND SAY " INSTED" WHICH IS MISSING AN "A"
Good job guys. Most of the paid were volunteers prior to Decatur going paid. They are still putting their lives on the lines for us every day they go to work and the pay is not enough for that. Keep up the good work guys. You have the support of grateful citizens backing you up. Unfortunately some people no matter what are going to complain. My question to those is what do you do for your community?
Great, Decatur Fire Department does a good job, gets some recognition and a well deserved "pat on the back" on the Blog, and someone uses this to go off on a "rant"! Makes you wonder about some people's day-to-day outlook on life.
The second poster brings up some points. I live right outside Decatur city limits, if I need help from a fire dept., who is going to come? If the city of Decatur comes (which would be great), that is not fair to the people in Decatur to pay their guys to put out my fire. The county needs fire districts that include city limits and all fire departments would be paid by the county.Just my thoughts.
Another point added to my last comment. The same should apply for animal control, and health departments.
just a little FYI decatur asked for assistance on the fire yesterday and it wasnt from Bridgeport it was from Greenwood/Slidell VFD i dont know where you get your info from but they do not always ask for help from Bridgeport
I drove by that exact location yesterday...now that I think about it, I remember throwing a cigarette out my window - oops! sorry! Can't tell you who I am though...
10:57- We already know who you are!! Apparently, you did'nt notice the little tiny video cameras that are attached to two different fence posts on that road. One camera does east-west, the other north-south, the cable is ran underground into two seperate homes.24/7, They have very clear/color video of every vehicle that drives down that road. I've seen it!!
To 9:07 am yes they did ask for bridgeport as stated in the update and I do believe the radio traffic from decatur fire dept did ask for bridgeport when they were told that the county dispatched Greenwood/Slidellas for the second post this person does bring up a good question, how long is the City of Decatur and their tax paying citizens going to foot the bill for the fire dept to respond to the calls in the county, dont get me wrong the city does sign a contract to provide fire service to their county fire district and now get paid just under 40,000 a year for that protection, that is just a drop in the bucket to what the city is putting into the fire dept. some of the other depts in the county have only that 40,000 a year to work with and still provide the same level of fire protection that the GREAT DECATUR FIRE DEPT. provides. My question to those is what do you do for your community?7:51 AMThe answer is the same thing as your firefighters . long nights fighting fires, missed meals, missed family time, many many hours training all for NO PAY!!!!then we have to go to work when all that is done
10;37 Lay off the amber bottles boy, the alcohol makes you look like an idiot! It's only ten miles from Bport to Decatur.8:50 I think Decatur FD will continue to respond as they always have to those outside the city limits. Wise county has paid each department in the county to respond wherever needed for at least 50 years. It 's not always been enough but thats what the department agreed to do when they cashed the checks. You almost sound guilty for asking them to come outside the city limits ! DON'T, You pay city taxes every time you make a purchase in Decatur or Bridgeport and I doubt you get any other service from the city. The citizens of Decatur will eventually reap more in fire insurance savings ( due to lower ISO ratings) than the taxes the FD costs them.
I don't think 10:57 is exactly the brightest light on the Christmas tree this year!! I wonder if he/she made it past third grade??
12:59 I did make it past third grade, but don't remember most of it - I was drunk and stoned all the time.10:57
I dont understand the negative attitudes toward the decatur fire dept. according to the radio traffic that i heard the other day, the first dept they asked for was greenwood/slidell. Only later did they ask for bridgeport. Last time i checked Bridgeport was only about 10 miles away. All the dept's in Wise co. do a good job, we need all the volunteer firefighters we can get. I believe that all the guys that were hired in Decatur were volunteers for several years and put in those long nights fighting fires, missed meals, and time away from their families, then went to their jobs everyday. And during all that, they found some extra time to go to school and get the cetifications needed to get a paid firemans job. it sounds to me that there may be some guys out there that are a little jealous that they did what they had to do to get a paid position. Like i said all the dept's. in Wise co. do a good job. We need alot more folks to volunteer at the nearest dept, not only to fight fire but help the fireman with other things. So maybe we should quit bickering over who is better or who thinks their better and all work together for a common goal: MAKING WISE CO A SAFER PLACE!!!
TO 9:56 some of us did in fact find the time to attend these schools and get the certifications that the paid firefighters in Decatur have and even higher certificates but when it came down to the hiring process all of this was over looked and the volunteers were hired.
OK CANT WE ALL GET ALONG IT REALLY DOES NOT MATTER IF THEY ARE PAID OR VOLUNTEER, THE GUYS AT THE DECATUR FIRE DEPT ARE TOP NOTCH IN MY BOOK I HAVE KNOWN MOST OF THEM FOR YEARS AND ATTENDED FIRE ACADEMY WITH TWO OF THE PAID GUYS AND EMT SCHOOL WITH ONE. I AM THE CHIEF OF PARADISE WHICH BORDERS THE SOUTH SIDE OF DECATURS DISTRICT AND WHEN WE NEED HELP THEY ARE THERE AND THE SAME GOES FOR ALL OF THE DEPARTMENTS IN WISE COUNTY. FROM CRAFTON TO NEWARK,FROM GREENWOOD/SLIDELL TO BOONESVILLE AND ALL THE POINTS BETWEEN WE ARE ALL DOING THE SAME JOB!!! TO ALL THE FIREFIGHTERS IN WISE COUNTY VOLUNTEER OR PAID KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. TO ALL THE CITIZENS OF WISE COUNTY WE COULD NOT DO IT WITH OUT YOUR HELP PLEASE DONATE TO YOUR LOCAL FIRE DEPT.
good job jeffie you are my fav. county employee although that isnt much of a compliment
To 10:41 PM, It sounds to me like you're a poor looser. Having personal knowledge of the people hired, it was handled in a very professional manner. The volunteers who were hired gave their heart, souls and numerous volunteer hours taking away from families to protect the citizens of Wise County/Decatur. Being that you may have "more" training experience etc. does not make you the better candidate. I feel like the volunteers should have been considered first for the paid positions if they met the standards/qualifications for the position.
