Things Like This Bother Me - Philosophically Speaking

"WACO - A pastor performing a baptism was electrocuted inside his church Sunday morning after grabbing a microphone while partially submerged, a worker at the church said. University Baptist Church Rev. Kyle Lake, 33, was standing in water in the baptistry when he was electrocuted, said Jamie Dudley, wife of UBC community pastor Ben Dudley and a business adminstrator at the church." Rest of Star Telegram story (Photo not directly related to story). Edit: CNN has a photograph of this young guy.

In life, bad things happen to good people.

It was a tragic accident; but at least the person the younger preacher was going to baptize was not in the water or she may have died also.

Life is a precious gift from God. Accidents happen. People get sick and die.

What was disturbing is no one in the congregation helped. Why? The article said the congregation started to pray.

It is the time for prayer; but also the time for life saving action.

God expects us to act to help ourselves and others.

CPR and prayer at the same time!

If you read the story in the link provided, you'll see that there were doctors in the service who rushed to help him. People didn't just sit by and watch and pray. Prayer is powerful. This was the perfect time to pray.

One thing to always remember:
God is still glorious, even in this situation.

That is the answer to everything isn't it? I swear. sometimes people just need to wake up and smell the freshly harvested hashish.

Just amazing. When bad things happen, it's an "accident" or "nature". When good things happen it's "God" or "prayer". People, you're either all in or all out. Believe or don't. If you do, then you must believe that the electrocution was the will of God, and done by his hand.

Well if that is true, it is messed up. I guess it was Gods' will right? I am sure some bible eater will yell at me and give another reason as soon as I am done writing this.

If you have read the Bible, you will know that it says that God allows it to rain on the righteous and unrighteous.
God does allow us to make our own decisions and we are sometimes affected negatively by those decisions. He will also answer prayer. I'm sure no one was praying that this man wouldn't be electrocuted before because they had no idea what might happen. It's sad and there are no good answers but if you believe, you will find answers in the end.

Well then that contradicts the whole christian belief of "Gods' will" now doesn't it? So your life is predetermined, but you just don't want to admit that? I am confused. So it boils down-God knew he was going to die-or did God let his own die? Just a though.

I think it is the hand of God. We don't see the bigger picture. Maybe it was his time. Maybe this will impact someone in some way that they needed to be impacted. The bottom line is that we just don't know. We don't know for sure it is the hand of God either it is just what I happen to believe.

Many of you that attack others for their beliefs are the very ones screaming the loudest when someone disagrees with yours. How about we all lighten up?

No one is attacking anyone. If you read the statements again, they are just questions.

If you walk across I 35 N at 5:00 in the afternoon you are probably going to get hit and killed by a car.

This is a judgement call - not from God but from making a bad decision. I have been taught since I was a little person that you never touch anything electrical when you are in water. Just makes good sense.

I think calling someone a Bible Eater is attacking them. Maybe it is just me.

Just another reason to be a Methodist -- sprinkling over immersion

Well it is funny the division between the Christians in Wise County. Some of you think it is "Gods' Will", while others believe he was basically dumb for getting himself in that predicament, in which case he died. Kind of funny really.

What a horrible accident. The young man died and left a void in so many people's lives.

I wonder how the folks felt that were in charge of setting up the sound and all of that - surely they must be suffering lots of guilt.

It is just so sad.

I guess the church isnt the safest place afterall. Why would God do this in "his" house?

Puhlease

It is pointless to question why certain things happen. We cannot begin to fathom God's reasons. We can simply pray for Pastor Kyle's family and his congregation, and take comfort in knowing that they will all be reunited some day.

If the Pastor had entered the baptism pool with a blow dryer in his hands, would you think it was God's plan? Or was he responsible for his own accident?

Whatever happened to music in the background and some silence? Why does religous services have to be so into sound systems, big screens, cameras, lighting.

It was just an accident.

Why are we so wimpy that we can't live in a world where accidents just happen? We want God to be in total control of every little thing. Perhaps God set all this in motion and gave us free will.

God this God that.

This dude was dumb and should had been fried

Anon 3:41, why in the world would you say such a thing? Would you go up to his grief-stricken wife and small children and say that? It was a horrible accident...I hope that someone that you love doesn't suffer death by a tragic accident...something tells me you wouldn't say something so incredibly STUPID then!

If it is just an accident, teach your other Christian friends this as well. I guess some of them are not getting the message.

So how does prayer work? How many people in the world are praying at any given time? Does God hear the prayers and decide no, I am not going to help these doctors save this guy. The good that might come out of this is that you will have more preachers thinking twice before grapping that mike while standing in three feet of water, but what about the girl who was getting baptized, do you think she getting in water any time soon? And what about the kids who watched this happen? Just some thoughts.

Anon at 10:11,
Stop trying to act like you were there. We all know you weren't. It was in WACO!

2:35 - interesting points about sound systems and all of that.....

......folks get baptized in tanks, swimming pools and lakes with no sound systems.....

......church services today are not much different than a live bar on Saturday night......

.....all we need now are little intimate tables, candles and a bottle of wine.

....ever noticed the ad for one of these churches that has the kid saying, "this place rocks"......

...i gotta get me a new church!

....mine is just too dull!

Anon 2:08:

You don't think that Waco has computers or the internet. I wasn't aware that only people in Wise County could view The Blog.
How do you know that someone was or wasn't in Waco??

Anonymous said...

5:30 has some points. The children in the Waco church need counselors or they may freak out when their time comes to go into he pool and be dipped!

9:32: Is Onward Christian Solders or Bringing in the Sheaves your favorite hymn?

Maybe you should run an for your church "This Place Snoozes"

Bet you don't have trouble finding a seat either.

Hey 2:08-obviously you are a jackass. read barry's latest blog about the incident. just because you're scared to leave wise county, don't assume you are the only one.
