Different Kind Of Trial
Just checked on the courthouse and noticed that we have a felony trial going on: Failure To Register as a Sex Offender. That may be a first for Wise County.
But the first hurdle for the defense is to have the jury panel commit to not convicting the defendant for being a sex offender in the past (or, more importantly, identifying those that would.)
Edit: 9 woman, 3 man jury selected by noon.
Edit: Both sides rested and closed by 5:00 p.m. Closing arguments tomorrow. The defendant testified and admitted to spending 14 nights (not continuous) with a girlfriend who lived in Wise County, but he did not move here so no need to register. Regarding his prior offense, he did a couple of five year concurrent sentences. The only thing I know is that the sex offense registry listed the victim in that case as "16" and "a friend." The defendant is a pretty young guy himself.

Who is it?
I don't quite understand the whole "registered sex offender" program. These people were convicted of a crime that was classified as a "sex crime" and they served their full sentence. Since there is a high percentage of repeat offenders they are required to make law enforcement aware of their home address for the rest of their lives. But if they are so likely to commit another sex crime why are they free in the first place? It seems like something a politician dreamed up to look like they were finding a solution to a problem. Either they paid their debt to society and are reformed enough to live in the populace or they aren't.
I can have a convicted murderer living next door to me and have no idea, but I do know Larry down the street was busted for "pulling a Pee Wee" in an adult bookstore. It doesn't really make any sense.
Sexual Salt makes rump roast taste good.
that ain't ralph hardy is it??
"I can have a convicted murderer living next door to me and have no idea, but I do know Larry down the street was busted for "pulling a Pee Wee" in an adult bookstore. It doesn't really make any sense."
Only ONE of the problems with that irrational and blatantly unconstitutional program.
y'all leave Larry & his brothers
Daryl & Daryl(sp?) alone..
Certainly I don't know, but can these sexual offenders ever be cured? If not, I want them identified some way so I can protect my children.
The results of this particular trial should be interesting, but it sounds like a time waste if the guy is already known for his sick acts.
Oprah had a show recently on these perverts. It made me sick some of the things these sickos do to innocent children.
Nice! My spouse had jury duty and I have not heard from since the 930 break :)
First, thanks to 11:22 for the thought.
Happily, none of my naughty bits have ever been observed in public. Would probably stampede cattle, cower dogs, and curdle milk. Not attractive in the least.

I don't believe there is any scientific evidence a child molester can be rehabilitated. For that matter, I don't believe any real rehabilitation occurs in prison for any kind of crime. The main reasons for prison are to get them off the streets and to punish for the crime committed. Since experts will likely tell you child molesters can not be rehabilitated we citizens have every right to know when a predator lives in our neighborhoods. I think they give up any right to privacy once they lay a hand on a child in a deviant manner. Should all crimes considered as sex crimes be held to the same standards of punishment as others? No. But I have no compassion for anybody who commits the most heinous ones.
I'd say this guy's chances are right up there with a snowball in Hell.
Why is he not in prison?
Sex offender registry sounds good until you find out that about 90% of the people on there are not predators after children. Many times it is a guy who graduated from high school but did not leave his freshman girlfriend behind. Or maybe it was a guy who stepped behind a tree in the park to take a leak and is spied by a mom or a cop.
I agree with 10:32, if they have done their time, they should be done with their punishment. If they are so dangerous they should have gotten a stiffer sentence.
I agree there is very little chance in rehabilitating someone who sexually abuses a child, but that leaves us with a decision to make. Do we lock these possibly dangerious people up for a crime they have yet to do yet? If you start looking at statistics many children who were abused grow up to abuse kids themselves. So do we go ahead and lock the victim up too? It quickly starts sounding like the Tom Cruise movIe where people were arrested before they committed crimes.
Too many women, Mr. DA, you're gonna lose...
Statistically, I think most childred are abuse not by a stranger but a family member!
Statstically, I think most of these go unreported.........therefore most sex offenders are living amongst us without a label.
Good parenting is the only answer.
Politicians created this mess pretending to "do something."
1:31....you said "stiffer".
How appropriate.
Good points 1:57 - and some of the perverts are likely politicians who indulge in such sick acts.
And if charged, some idiot lawyer would defend their precious human rights - spew the "humanity" crap and they'd be turned loose to grab more children and ruin them for life.
If convicted one time by a jury, these folks should NEVER get out of jail.
1:52, the more women the better for sex crimes. Women are the main target as 1/3 of all women will have experienced some type of sex crime. Women are going to be less sympathetic. A dad wants to kill the guy by stringing him up by his balls and beating him with a spiked bat no matter the age of his kid. The moms want justice, dads just want old time justice for the kid.
Now I agree that there are probably thousands of Texas sex offenders who get a bad rap, such as the kid peeing behind a tree or the girlfriend who is a year younger who sends a pic that then constitutes child porn. Now this may be a leap, but is there any chance we can have a government sponsored program that has common sense. We need a system that looks at the offenders who could be a real risk, not simply an offender.
Good luck to the victim, they will have a lifetime of pain.
And barry how can you post pictures of jury panel and defendent?
if whacko had been convicted of child molesting he would still be alive...hmmmmm
That's pretty profound right there, 8:13PM.......I never thought of it that way. Then, it made me think, would you then be biatching about his incarceration costs? Probably.
If he had of gone on a cruise for two weeks would they have a sign on his cabin?
1:57 - so true and so much of that goes unreported because children are frightened, confused and may even be threatened if they tell.
Children should be told as early as possible to go to an adult and tell them if inappropriate behavior is going on - that is, if the parents are sane, responsible and caring.
Unfortunately, lots of children live in despicable conditions where this kind of thing goes on regularly - and some have religious fanatic parents who don't even have the guts to discuss such things.
And so it goes.
But would it change your mind, if he as a convicted sex offender came to stay frequently next door to your house where your kids played outside or teenagers hang out and didn't register? The whole point if something happens while he is in Wise County, they can rule him out or drop by and check on him, they can know where he is at all times.
My question is that I want to know how old was the girl in Wise County was that he was staying with? They didn't disclose that information.
On you know what 9:29 am. Yes, I think they should change the law to express a true meaning of residence, they need to expand it. Which it doesn't. That way when I take my kids on a cruise, I can know who is right next door.
I still think a small tatoo is the answer, identifying them as registered sex offenders.
Why not?
If a 16 year old married girl with a kid (there are lots of moms this age who are also married) cheats on her husband with a guy in his 20s, does that guy get arrested, put in jail for ten years and have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life? If not, why not?
9:03 - register HER as a sex offender.
My sister was 16 when she met my then 22 year old brother-in-law. They dated for six months and eloped to New Mexico to get married. That was over 50 years ago. They still wrap up in each other's arms much too frequently. I guess he should be on the sexual offender list.
