- The jury in the Failure To Register case in Decatur deliberated most of the morning and then took a lunch break. They did send a note out asking for the judge to define "reasonable doubt."
- I got in a discussion this morning with our County Attorney over whether we should fear someone driving down the road with a blood alcohol concentration of twice the legal limit IF there is no evidence being present that shows he is impaired mentally or physically. Me: No. Him: Absolutely.

When the guy was convicted on the sexual offender deal, he was 22 & she was 16. I don't suppose that can be considered, right?
But according to testimony, he was not residing here, he just spent 14 random nights here with his girlfriend. Is that residency? I can see why the jury asked about reasonable doubt.
This seems like a hard case to decide.

It is not their ability to drive and handle basic skills that is usually affected. Stopping, starting, changing lanes etc that becomes aproblem and often times with major consequences.

People make mistakes driving when they have not been drinking and most times can react in a manor that is not destructive. People loose that ability to react with alcohol in their blood. Everyone is safe as long as there is nothing that requires good reflexes. Delayed reflexes are well documented in people who drink (even a small amount) and drive.

How about this:
Everybody retake the driving test. Drink alcohol during the test until the examiner determines that you are too drunk to drive, and he notes your BAC level. After that, any time you get stopped, the cops can reference your driver's license to see if you have exceeded your personal limit. If you can function with twice the legal limit, then you're good to go.
Note: there is a chance this new policy could reduce the amount of silver that finds its way into your pockets, counselor. I suspect lots of folks can function past the legal limit

I still maintain that I'd rather be driving with or beside a drunk than an old 80 year old. I think they're much more dangerous and completely and totally annoying. And the texting teens but any drunk in the shade as far as dangerous goes. The cops should focus on ALL the dangerous folks out there, texting teens, drinkers, teeny little old codgers, and ticket them all. It's ridiculous to only focus on the drinkers. the teens and the old folks are just as guilty and just as dangerous.

We have laws/punishment so society feels safe at night, pretty sure those truckers on I-35 in Gainsville were sober and could have blown a 0.0, but if a driver shows no sign of impairment, then there would be no reason to pull them over, which should give any lawyer a way to get them off. However, didn't they catch Big Nate Newton becuase he was speeding with expired tags?

As for 22/16 and 14 days with girl friend. If it was my 16 year old I am sure I would be looking for a hanging rope but all of that aside, I think its ashame when we allow and even sometimes promote our girls to look older than they are and then punish the boys when they act like boys, where is the personal accountability. I would never send a man to prison for visiting for 14 days. Unless it was my 16 year old, but then that is a diffrent matter all together, and he probably would not be in the county court house.

Just saw the guilty verdict what a joke! Where were the girl's parents when all this was going on? They are just as guilty! And let us ruin a young man's life while we are at it! Our society sucks!
Edit. William Jefferson convicted on 11 of 16 counts. Jail time? Don't count on it.
