Well, wouldn't you have to be insane to do what she did?

comment4u...your way off lady. This woman is NOT a rabid animal. She has a mental disease that she cannot control. It's a disease just like cancer. She belongs to God and so do her children. I don't think putting her in a mental hospital will affect your lifestyle. You should get some education on mental illness. You mentioned feeling sorry for a friend that had a daughter with mental illness, and then you turn around and make this ignorant comment. I feel sorry for people like you.
My views are normally fairly liberal...EXCEPT when it comes to crimes against children.
I can not imagine the horror of those poor children fighting for their lives. I can only hope she is tortured until her death by her thoughts and memories.

It just seems to me that insanity is such an easy out to take. Too many people are killing their children and claiming to be insane.
While she does belong to God, she will answer to Him. It won't be such an easy out. Only God knows for sure if was insane and she will answer to Him.
C4U - I agree with you. I would have loved to have been on that jury. We would still be deliberating, because this was obviously premeditated. Not once, not twice, but FIVE times~~!!
The death sentence indeed - our tax dollars are paying for the mental institution AND would be paying for her life term sentence too~~!!
The bad part is she could get out of the mental institution and do it again. My understanding is that this sentence is not a life term. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but that's how I read the article.
It is easy to judge.. If I'm not mistaken she was on medication and she chose to stop taking them. I'm very familiar with mental illness, you think you feel better so you get off meds (but it's the meds that make you feel better) and then you totally crash. I agree the insanity defense is probably over used and yes she should defintely be punished, not only by god but by a jury of her peers as well.
33, You are right, God is in control, and those kids do belong to God. This would be hard to judge.
God forgives and Jesus saves. Although, she committed a horrible atrocity, God has not thrown her away. Sorry folks, it doesn't work like that. Society has their opinion and only GOD knows her heart.

I place the blame on her retard exhusband. He should have stepped in a LONG time before she got to her breaking point. I had post partum depression that was borderline psychotic and you have no idea what that is like unless you have been there. I was treated with medication and within six months I was able to come off of it. But HE should have sent those two other boys to public school instead of having her home school them and hired a FREAKING nanny to help her with the THREE kiddos under five. Maybe if he had been a real man and helped his wife, then the whole travesty wouldn't have occured. By the way, my husband is wonderful. I had lots of help from my mom and dad, brothers, and husband during my ordeal and it made all the difference.
I love it when you call me "lady." Ugh...I DO feel sorry for the woman who's daughter has the voices in her head--BUT her daughter acknowledged that Mom needed to take her children because her "brain keeps buzzing." She motivated herself to address her own, yes tragic, problem.
Andrea Yates sat around MULLING over murdering her innocent children...she chased those terror-filled kids around to KILL them. She wouldn't allow them to GET AWAY FROM HER sorry sick ass.
And my lifestyle? Hmm...yeah, I'll probably continue to keep as many of my tax dollars for the LIVE children in my house, versus feeding a woman who snuffed out her own...

Lets put religion aside for a moment. I am a psychologist by trade, so I thought I would throw in my two cents worth.
Reason of insanity is just a generic term used for anyone that has killed a person. You are not normal when you do something to take another person's life-so saying they are insane is the only rational term to break from normality to insanity.
Is insanity a disease, no. Yes, you may have to take medication in certain instances to balance your mind. In the case of Andrea Yates, she was still cognizant of her surroundings. She had enough mental capacity to recognize her children; decide why they should die; and then kill them. She, even though off medication, knew what she was doing. After all, she was the one that killed them-they did not kill themselves.
It is an absolute atrocity to society that this psycho is now allowed to go an asylum for "help".
When a dog gets the taste of blood, loses his mind, or bites another person-what does the owner usually do? That is my solution.

I never read anything in the reporting of the trial that indicated that Andrea Yates sat around mulling(like she had time to do that with homeschooling two older ones while managing a preschooler, a toddler, and an infant)this over. The woman was psychotic. She had a terrible, awful episode that resulted in horrible deaths of beautiful children. But she is mentally ill. She should not be punished for being mentally ill. She was failed by her family. Its not like she was a Darlie Routier (if you remember her) pining away for a better boob job and getting fat on bon bons.
Okay, enough of this comparing people to animals. We are totally different. You cannot "put a person down" like you do a dog. We are not animals. That is a stupid comparison.

Her husband should be ashamed of himself for not taking charge of her mental health. She had post partum depression with EACH BABY. She never had time to recuperate. I am sorry. Any HUMAN that KILLS another HUMAN cannot be considered HUMAN-in a mental sense. Take a moment and do a google search on mentally ill and murder and you will see a ton of cases that happened to swing the other way -with less evidence. Had this of happened in another part of Texas-or without so many God fearing bible thumpers without an unbiased point of view then it would of been a fair trial.

Why does it always have to come down to religion? I believe in a higher power but I respect others beliefs as well. No one on this blog asked to be "witnessed" to. I think you do more harm than good for religion by trying to cram it down people's throats. If I want a sermon I will go to my faith not on this blog. When you start the holier than thou crap, it makes me further question organized religion.

I do not understand why charges are not pressed against the father for child endangerment. He knew she had problems. Yet he wasn't making sure she was on her medication? Was not monitoring her mental state?
I thought I remembered seeing her speaking about how she envisioned exactly how she was goint to kill each child...before it happened. Our legal system is pulling the rest of the country down with it if they do not consider that guilty.
She knew she had mental problems long before she killed her children. She was on medication and stopped taking it even though she knew she needed (you dont go to the doc and ask otherwise). Her husband should have taken the children out of the home as soon as she stopped taking it but hind sight is 20/20.
Bottom line is she had the medication to controll herself all she had to do was take it but she didnt. IF she was "insane" it was her own fault and she is still responsible for the deaths of her children and for that she should be tortured the same way she tortured them.
Her life should be taken then her sole could then be sent to hell ...
I have NO SYMPATHY for anyone whom harms Women or Children ...

Collectionsite the Bible tells us that there is no sin that God will not forgive. As hard as it is for many of you to accept if Andrea Yates asks for His forgiveness she will receive it. That is what is so awesome about God. No matter what you do He is the one person that will never turn His back on you. Do I think she deserves a spot in Heaven? No, but that is the beauty of God's grace.

It is beyond comprehension. It is simply amazing how someone can go "God, God, God is in charge of everything", yet in the same breath won't realize that if that is true, and you believe it, then you must insist that YOUR GOD wanted little children to be painfully bludgeoned and die a horrible death in order that your God might "call them up" to be with him. I mean, why doesn't YOUR GOD just skip the part about kids being raped, mutilated, eaten, boiled, burned while killed, and just go to the "come be with me" part?
