I bet the victims of Katrina would switch places with you in a heart beat. Sounds like you need to count your blessings and get your priorities straight.

Anon #2,
I did not write the first statement. But, I agree with what he said. I have counted my blessings many times. Where was the government when my house was destroyed back in '96 in Orlando, because of a hurricane? No one helped my family monetarily. Yes, we received food from red cross-clothes from donations. But, we were screwed. Here it is 2005, I am living in Decatur-and my life is finally back together; house, car, awesome job. But, I had to work at it. I and many other survivors, were never ever handed any sum of money from the government. I had insurance on my house. As soon as I filed a claim after the hurricane, they dropped our insurance on my home. I didn't take them to court, because I was too busy working to feed and shelter my family.
So, yes $2000 is ridiculous. If they are going to do that. They should hand every person that has been displaced by a hurricane $2000. I rest my case.

Anon #4,
I am sorry about what happened. But, with 1.2 million evacuees displaced with nowhere to go, except a shelter-some amount of money must be given to get them on there feet, it is only logical. Hopefully, people will be honest about the debit cards, and not steal each others-I could see that happening unfortunately at the Astro Dome.

Looks to me like single Mom's get screwed again. They are giving them to every adult with no provision for the kids. A married couple w/no kids gets $2k each. A single mom gets $2k no matter how many kids she has.

What about single dads?

Off subject, but don't even get me started on single moms who receive handouts from the government. I pay my child's college tuition, but the girl next door who got knocked up and has a child has her tuition AND housing paid in full by the government. Don't give me that "single Moms get screwed again."

All single parents aren't unwed parents. There are a lot of single parents out there supporting children on their own with NO assistance and NO child support. Non-custodial parents frequently do not pay the child support they are supposed to. The custodial parents don't get a lot of tax breaks or breaks on daycare or anything else so they can work and support their children.

Anon #8,
As a single dad myself, I agree completely with your statement. It is amazing all of the benefits single mothers get, compared to fathers. A new house, education, work assistance, TANF, hell food stamps, sometimes even a new/used car. I have tried to obtain assistance to take care of my 3 kids, because I was layed off. The govt. didn't give me sh*t.

they hit the jackpot ....they all get handed 2 thousand bucks and now all the nike shoes and clothes and all the other stuff they stole (and continue to steal) end up at traders village in grand prairie, some of them can make it through this with thousands on thousands of dollars.
what a deal.

So far as I have seen the government is continually spending obscene amounts of money on far crazier things. They could be spending it studying the mating habits of the speckled tree toad...lol

Plus $2000 isn't much for someone who lost everything. $640 million is a drop in the bucket considering what the total repair of the damages will cost.

Actually having 1.2% of the currently approved funding making it directly into the hands of those who it was approved for must be some kind of record...Now that's government efficiency!

The thing is a lot of those people didn't have anything anyway.

Yes, they lost their shelter, but it was govt. subsidized to begin with.

They were going to buy new Nikes with their welfare check anyway.

Before long, they will figure out how to get back on full-time welfare and the 2000. is nothing more than a Christmas bonus.

Yeah, they will be lined up in the welfare line as soon as they can get there.

The only difference is now they will be in Dallas!!

And according to former First Lady Barbara Bush, those in the Astrodome are all poor and this is an improvement for them!

You all are being pretty presumptuous. How do you know they were living in subsidized housing? Everyone did not steal stuff.

Single dad's do get a raw deal. Single parents do in general.

condoleesa,
I would not say single parents do in general. Single dads get screwed while single moms get assistance. That is whats sad about this country. When a person actually needs assistance, more than likely they can't get it-because a mom with 10 kids and no dad is using it.

You are still generalizing I know a lot of single mom's that get Nothing from anyone.

Seeing some of the purchases made with the "Lone Star" card, probably not a great way to dole out charity.
