Streep vs. Trump: Who Ya Got?

"But there was one performance this year that stunned me. It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good; there was nothing good about it. But it was effective and it did its job. It made its intended audience laugh, and show their teeth. It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter. Someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back. It kind of broke my heart when I saw it, and I still can’t get it out of my head, because it wasn’t in a movie. It was real life. And this instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life, because it kinda gives permission for other people to do the same thing. Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence. And when the powerful use their position to bully others we all lose."

Trump's response (which is amazing that he even responded):

Someone should reveal to Hollywood that they are far from the intelligentsia in this country. They are overpaid, fortunate humans that are poor at trying to be a serious political pundit. They are in the main distorted ideologues with no cognitive credibility at all. They need to sit and admire their little statuettes and learn to choose the proper forums to air their asinine out of touch observations.

Even though I expected Trump to continue to deny he mocked the New York Times reported early during the primary, I'm shocked he took to twitter so early in the morning to go after Streep! His spokesperson Conway defense on CNN this morning that we don't know what is in his heart, that he was not mocking the reporter disability! Trump seems to deny his own actions by telling lies; he didn't do it or would never do it! Words matter; actions speak louder than words. Streep point was disrespect leads to disrespect, violence leads to violence. In a culture where it is "us against them", Trump plays to his followers. It is up to the press to safeguard the truth and hold our leaders accountable. Trump lack of self control and total lack of empathy may not matter to his followers, but it does matter who expect more from the President.

Is it ok if I really dislike Trump -> and <- Streep? Because I do.

Almost every innocent child who works in Hollywood at some point transforms into a dysfunctional, train wreck exhibitionist who struggles with substance abuse and mental health issues.

Some of the kids who've experienced the Hollywood system, Cory Feldman among them, say pedophilia is rampant in that town. Other kids who grew up in that industry say people in Hollywood psychologically abused them and mistreated them in other ways. Most of those dirtbag celebrities who claim the moral high ground when they diss Donald Trump and his voters are the same people who defend Roman Polanski for raping a 13-year-old girl.

And these celebrities have the conceit to lecture people in middle America about our way of life and our politics?

If it doesn't matter, then why did Trump respond? No adult should behave in the manner that he did. It is uncivilized and shows him for what he is: an asshole.

Wasn't the Dixie chicks careers over for saying less than what Hollywood is saying today?

So many people saying they don't care what a rich celebrity thinks about politics. Yet, they voted for a rich celebrity that can't think at all.

Streep's another Hollywood celebrity who realizes that she's made a fortune by contributing so little of substance to society, that she feels compelled to melodramatically repeat the bleatings of her Hollywood herd to try to fill the emptiness in her soul.

If these brave souls want to show some backbone, let them publicly denounce Islamic terrorism, or Islamic treatment of women and gays (and -gasp- Christians.) Let them mock their fellow celebrities who made a demi-god of Obama, worshiping in his cult of personality. Sadly, those subjects are too dangerous. Just as terrorists seek soft targets, Hollywood celebrities make sure they only criticize those who are safe to criticize.

Put Streep with Cuban, I haven't watched a Mavericks game or an episode of Shark Tank since Cuban decided what he thought was more important than the average "rabble/deplorable" to quote George Bailey "Just remember this,(insert Mark Cuban, Meryl Streep or any other self absorbed celebrity, athlete, etc.), this rabble/deplorable you're talking about, they do most of the working and paying and living and dying in this community." To stay with the theme of quoting lines from movies (yes I know it's ironic)"I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore". Short version no more Meryl Streep movies.

Trump is a celebrity, not from Hollywood but from New York. Streep recognized when he mocked the disabled New York Times reporter as a "performance". His followers at the rally laughed and he loved being their entertainment! For all those who say someone who is an actor doesn't understand politics, Trump proves that not true! He launched his political campaign by creating his image on reality TV. Why would being a reality TV star make anyone qualified to be the President? wordkyle, Trump is an celebrity and I guess you are right that they "make sure they only criticize those who are safe to criticize"...Trump goes after the disabled, Streep but not Putin!!!

Excellent comment Wordkyle

1131 - Trump didn't mock a disabled New York Times reporter. He mocked a New York Times reporter who happened to have a disability - just as he had previously mocked others without physical disabilities. Trump made the mistake of treating the reporter like a regular person.

Obama is a celebrity too...and a community organizer!

Anonymous said...

Wordkyle- We know Trump mocked the reporter's disability because we have a video of Trump MOCKING THE REPORTER'S DISABILITY. No other rebuttal is needed. Now stop lying.

Anonymous said...

And how much time did Bush spend responding to Natalie Maines and the other Dixie Chicks' criticism of him? I remember him making a minimal response to a reporter's question, then nothing. Now we have a prima donna who not only vents on the phone that night, but makes several late night angry tweets because he is butt-hurt. Must have a lot of free time now-a-days to get ready to take office. Once again, a thirteen year old teenage girl is becoming President this month, it appears.

Wordy, Trump mocked the disability itself. He literally made fun of the reporter's disability by mocking him. You're even smart enough to see that.

Trump's another celebrity who realizes that he's made a fortune by contributing so little of substance to society, that he feels compelled to melodramatically repeat the bleatings of his herd to try to fill the emptiness in his soul.

He is the most insecure man in the world.

Let's see what happens with Streep going forward. Did Susan Sarandon or Tim Robbins really do anything after supporting Kerry and going against Bush?

12:42 - WordKyle made it very clear - Trump did not mock a disabled reporter, he mocked a reporter with a disability. Gosh, what don't you get about that?! That's like saying, I didn't kill my wife, I killed the woman to which I'm married. See why it's okay now?!

Anonymous said...

12:42 - Trump has mocked non disabled in the same manner. You are repeating a lie.

Anonymous said...

Anyone remember Obama making fun of Special Olympics athletes?

wordkyle said...

1242 - Sometimes it ain't what you don't know, it's what you know that ain't so. And what you think you know ain't so.

Here's video from 2005 where Trump uses the same gesture to mock himself. (At the 0:38 second mark.)
Here's video where Trump uses the same gesture during the primaries to mock Ted Cruz. (At the 0:17 second mark.)
Video also exists of Trump using the same gesture to mock bank presidents and a general who had appeared on television. (The mocking of the general was apparently in the same speech where he was accused of mocking the reporter.)

wordkyle said...

119 - I see that you had to change the wording of what I said to try to make your point. Why?

Anonymous said...

Jedediah Bila on The View this morning made a good point (before she was attached by the other women) that Trump uses these types of gestures frequently. They even showed several clips of him doing the same thing several times talking about other haters. He has said over and over again he was not making fun of the disability but of the misinformation spouted by the fellow. Trump is very annoying but so often what he says is misrepresented. I just wish he would let his team dispel the rumors instead of taking to twitter and doing it himself. Her speech did nothing to making things better so I see no value in it. What he did was goofy but grossly misrepresented. This country is so divided and this sort of speech does nothing to make it better.

When he came under fire for mocking the disabled reporter, Trump claimed that he could not have actually been making fun of Kovaleski’s arthrogryposis disability because he had never met the reporter and didn’t even know what he looked like — despite the fact that Trump himself had prefaced his mocking impression by saying, “you gotta see this guy!” (http://heavy.com/news/2016/09/donald-trump-mocks-disabled-reporter-serge-kovaleski-denies-mocking-reporter/)

BG I'm an old dude and for at least 70 of my years on this earth I have payed attention to the goings on around me. The last few weeks have been, as Monty Python is want to say "something completely different".
I have to say that reading the comments on your blog would send the most positive of persons into a depressive death spiral. Nowhere on earth can one find such a dearth of knowledge, intellect and good sense as in North Texas!
Not even the most famous comedians of yore could come up with a script this hysterical. Elect a blithering boob for president and he appoints a gaggle of the criminally insane as his cabinet - AND THE CITIZENS OF WISE COUNTY LOVE IT??
I can see no route to sanity from here, so I shall take off my boots, pull up an alligator to sit on, pop a top of my favorite brew and watch the insanity. Good-by cruel world. LOL!

Anonymous said...

You people act like Trump should be given the benefit of the doubt on that gesture. With his track record, he gets no such benefit.

Anonymous said...

Good point, Wordy. Please let me rephrase. I didn't kill my wife, I killed a woman to which I HAPPENED to be married. I can see now the error of my ways and how inserting "which happened" changes the entire meaning!

I am not necessarily saying I disagree with you, but that your argument, as it was phrased, is illogical. If Trump had attack the substance of the reporter, it would be one thing. To do your best "'tard" impersonation in front of a microphone, and then the reporter "happens" to be disabled, then that is another thing entirely, no? If Trump was this upstanding citizen who had not lied and cheated his way through life, maybe he'd get a little slack; but he is isn't, so he doesn't. ]

Sounds fair to me.

Take your old Methuzala ass and get out then, you lost! Nothing worse than old Hippie trash.

Your generation was the beginning of the downfall of our society. We are now trying to fix everything you and your fellow trash have destroyed...trying to restore law and order to the reckless bunch of heathens you created and enabled. It will take some doing still, sadly Trump is probably our best last hope. If you can hang on a few more years with your dope riddled body you can probably witness the destruction commence. Good riddance though...I hope you are alligator scat by midnight!

239 - Sorry, you still don't get the difference? Really? Or is this an act?

How about this, in case you're right about the wording:

Trump didn't mock a disabled New York Times reporter.
Trump mocked a New York Times reporter.
The reporter happened to have a disability.
(The use of "happened" followed by the infinitive "to" -- as in this example and in my 12:20 post -- indicates that something occurred by chance, rather than by design. This usage is fairy common.)

I wonder if Streep voted.

Anonymous said...

Let me see now...wasn't Ronald Reagan a Hollywood actor before getting into politics? DIdn't Donald Trump have a television show? Hmmmm. I'm sure there must be more.

I like calling ALL people retards*.
Some people, who happen to be mentally disabled*, get really offended when I call them retards*.
(It also offends some folks who aren't mentally disabled*, but not as much as the mentally disabled*.)
But since I call ALL people retards*, and I'm not targeting the mentally disabled*, use of the word is ok (especially for a President-elect)!

*Substitute the n-word for retard and black for mentally disabled and, voila, same thing.

Thanks, Wordy and the rest, for contributing to a high bar for all of us.

wordkyle said...

453 - Nope. The accusation has been that Trump mocked the specific disability of this particular reporter. It's been shown that he did not.

If you want to claim that Trump has a distasteful way of mocking everyone, then you might have a valid point. But that's not the claim I'm disputing.

Streep is classier and more talented than Trump. Not that I would vote for her. But given a choice of which of the two to have dinner with, it wouldn't be Trump.

1)If the Dixie Chicks are over, why did they have a sold-out concert this summer in Fair Park/other locations. It was ridiculous the number of people at the one I attended. They sold out of shirts. They made a ton of money and I'm glad, because it was one of the best concerts I've been to.
2)If what Trump did was okay, I encourage you to do the same performance piece at your work and/or church and/or Wal-Mart. Go right ahead and do this several times a day in public and tell me how it was okay to do. Also, please record and put on the internet. I'm sure no one will take issue with you doing it, because, there is nothing wrong behaving in this manner.
3)You won't, unless you are the same level of asshole that Trump is.

To Wordkyle: You seem to have the impression (one that is shared by your current man crush Trump) that that you're the smartest kid in the room; therefore your interpretation of events are the only meaningful ones. The fact is Trump mock the reporter intentionally with a parody of his disabilities and that makes Trump an asshole. For your bullshit wordsmithing to misconstrue that fact I would confer the same label on you.

Anonymous said...

wordkyle, perhaps we should give Trump the benefit of the doubt that he was not mocking the disability of the reporter, but making fun of the reporter to cover up the fact Trump told a big fat lie about witnessing thousands of Arabs, Palestians on rooftops celebrating the attack on the world trade center. Trump claimed he didn't know the reporter; the reporter did over 12 interviews , some in Trumps office. The reporter claims they were on a first name basis. In regard to the other times when Trump mocked others, it is different with the reporter because he says "you should see this guy" and goes into the impersonation. No, Trump is a pathological non truth teller! He lied about witnessing thousands celebrate and was called out on it early in the primary campaign so he could win followers who fear Muslims. He won the nomination by appealing to the lowest denominator. He has no empathy and that is why Streep called him out at the Golden Globes. I don't care what you or Franklin Graham say in defense of the president elects conduct because I know his actions disrespect the office of the president of the United States. He has proven over a lifetime that he is not fit to serve in that capacity. Trump is a third rate tv reality star while Streep is the most respected actor in our lifetime! All Trump needs to do is to apologize for mocking the reporter and admit he told a big fib about witnessing thousands celebrate! Sorry goes a long way in developing trust! There may come a time when the American people, the majority who didn't vote for him, need to trust him and truly believe him when he says "believe me".

612 - I'm only addressing the specific false accusation that Trump mocked a reporter's disability. I have no intention of trying to defend everything Trump does or says.

946 - You're entitled to your opinion, of course. In forming your opinion, do you completely disregard the video of Trump previously using the same gestures to mock other, non-disabled, people? If so, why?

Oh, and as for your second-hand namecalling....I've been involved in this forum too long to assign much importance to your opinion of me.
