I saw 10-15 men with guns surrounded by a mob of dozens of people who refused to back up. Given that there was an L-shaped line of riot police that had a pocket that had backed up some toward the building that the cameraman was in, I gather that the line of riot police was keeping the mob from the building, for whatever reason. The mob of people was NOT backing up. Getting withing Bad Breath Distance of a mob is a very good way of being overtaken by it.
I reiterate: 10+ cops with guns. You want to keep the mob back from the guns. You want to keep them from flanking the mob. All they have to do is back up when told to, and when they get the pain compliance jabs from the batons. The batons aren't comfortable. They leave bruises. But they won't kill, and won't maim, with the short jabs that were being used.
Barry, I'm asking you to consider the fact that we didn't see what happened before, nor what happened after. We also didn't see an overview of what was being accomplished by either side in that conflict. You asked if you're missing something. I submit that you are.

The world now has more than 7 billion people. It can't support them all. That's becoming apparent.
So it's not all that important who kills whom. Just as long as people start dying in droves. The sooner the better. So if cops start killing protesters, or vice versa, it all serves the same end. And the sooner the better. It will all get that global warming/resource problem under control just that much quicker.

When you spend three or four generations artificially maintaining herds of humans incapable of fending for themselves you shouldn't be surprised that evolution jumps in and claims its due. What the hell did you really think would be the outcome of such absurd husbandry? (hint- Utopia never was an option)
