If the coaches don't see a player quite ready for college ball, they have the option of red-shirting a player at the beginning of their freshman year. This way, they can still practice and not lose a year of eligibility. Therefore, their first year of eligibility doesn't start until their sophomore year. Thus, a player can play beyond their senior year, hence the name "fifth-year senior". The intelligent players actually enroll in graduate school while they play their last year of college FB, while others will enroll in basketweaving 101 or something. Hope this helps!!

When I was a freshman in college I had an art class with a 5th year senior football player. The guy made a "C" in the class because he was never there and would never turn in his projects.
