Flashback

I'm a proponent of never looking back and always moving forward. That being said, I got sucked in to this video the other day which violates my "Never Listen To Oldies" policy. It's Journey. As a young kid, I was absolutely fascinated with them - even going so far as to see them on three different occasions in Reunion Arena. But the video is interesting for reasons other than Steve Perry's golden voice - Notice how there's no flashy production, no videos, no balls of fire - just a band.

With rock and pop music, it's OK to look back. Even a lot of kids today are fascinated by it. Simple reason. The were distinctive and played music. It's wasn't all the same electronic mess. Today, can't tell who's singing. All sounds so alike, even country. Then, very distinctive. Didn't need the radio host to tell that you just listened to Aerosmith, Journey, or Tom Petty, or Bruce Springsteen, or ELO, Chicago, Cyndi Lauper, Heart, Alabama, George Jones, and the list is endless. No matter your preference, there was distinction and there were real instruments and music. Horns, strings, guitars, drums...thank God for XM radio.

I agree...it's always good to look back when it comes to music. My twelve year old son loves the Beatles, Journey, Heart, Stevie Nicks, CCR, etc. You just can't replace the classics.

I don't believe in living in the past but you should learn from the past both the good and bad. Unfortunately with music you have no choice but to use the past because there isn't anything today worth listening to. I saw Journey once in Kansas City, had cheap seats high and on the back side of the stage but I didn't care.

Yes, some old music was good. But you definately cannot generalize today's music. There are far too many genres. People's taste is different today than it was, and you obviously cannot move on with the times (not Barry obviously, because he admits that he doesn't listen to old music) but I mean seriously. I know plenty of older people who listen to current music who like it. You old fart music snobs need to expand your horizons because there is plenty of great music out there.
