Car Talk

The Ticket discussed the greatest inventions in car accessories over the last 20 years. The nominees, in no particular order, are: - Automatic windows - Automatic locks - Cruise control - Automatic headlights - Rain sensored window washers - Remote car locks - GPS - DVD player for the back seat - The "beeping" sensor while backing if someone or something is behind you (I didn't know this existed) Cruise control may be at the top of my list. (And that's a pic of the new Saturn Sky.)

We just purchased a new vehicle and had a tough time deciding. We looked at the luxury packages on GMC Yukon and the H2.(We ended up with the Yukon) but talk about bells and whistles! It took 3 hours just to program it! It has all that you described and more!

Vehicles walk, talk and do a little dance these days! Not only do you have GPS, but the voice directions sound like the dead woman who narrates on Desperate Housewives! It tells me where the next gas stations and eating establishments are, but also shows the golf courses with little green flags and the lakes and bodies of water in a beautiful blue!

The DVD player allows those in the back to watch a movie via headphones while those in the front can listen to Satelite radio. All the leather seats have heaters and our rear seats fold up with a touch of a button. The rear hatch also operates on the touch of a button either from the driver seat, or outside the vehicle. We not only have "back up beepers" but a back up camera!

It tells me when I have a low tire, how many miles left on what gas is in the tank, when I'm due for an oil change. We have remote start, so you can keep start it from inside the house. The vehicle remains locked but you can warm it up in the winter or cool it off in the summer before you ever get to it! Should an intruder get in, without the key the steering column is locked so you can't put it in gear.

Of course Onstar is standard, so if you loose your car or it's stolen, they can locate it for you and if need be, and unlock it! Phone service is provided as well.

Controls are on on the steering wheel, so you don't have to reach for buttons, and you can program with voice commands! There are even air bags in the 3 row seats now.

Modern technology is amazing!

And our nation's dependance on gasoline is HOW bad?

All contributing to feature bloat which makes vehicles unnecessarily heavy.

I just bought a new car, too. No DVD player, so my kids can look out the window and see the real world as it goes by, wave at truckers, and find Alaska license plates. No navigation system. There are enough signs to tell a basically intelligent person where he or she is, assuming you know your head from your butt, and north from south. And I can see out of my windshield if there is a gas station or cup of coffee ahead. Kind of leaves some adventure in the whole driving experience. I generally don't leave the house if I don't know where I'm going. Unless that's the plan. No back up camera on my car. I usually look where I'm going and check behind my car when backing out of the garage. Does have a flat tire sensor. I'll use my eyeballs and feel of the car to tell me if tire pressure is off. My ass is usually never so cold that it needs a heater under it. I do like the airbags in my car, though, since there are an increasing number of insecure, image conscious people driving huge vehicles they don't need while not paying much attention to what they're doing.

10:43 here. Should mention, before I get bombed by the big tank drivers, that I could afford just about anything I wanted.

so what is your car.

Acura TL. Was that, or Mercedes, BMW, Infiniti. Have liked Hondas, so TL seemed to suit.

Automobiles are a terrific waste of money. Everyone in Texas wants a BIG car. It's like some kind of status thing. So ridiculous and petty to me. All part of the so-called "American Dream." Buy, Buy, Buy, bigger and better, fancier, more, more, more, oil, oil, oil, Blah, Blah, Blah....

Affluenza.

Our server has been down, so I am delayed with rebuttal. My apologies. I was under the impression, this post was about new technology in vehicles. As Barry was not aware of "back up beepers", I shared our new vehicle equipment package.

In response to ANON 10:43:
I'm glad your children are blessed with the vision to look out the windows and see such. One of ours is handicapped, which includes being legally blind with a vision range that doesn't exceed much past the interior of the car. The DVD player prevents misery and boredom.

We like to travel to new destinations, instead of limiting our lives to the realm of "our own little world". We also like to take the backroads instead of the Interstate. This requires planned navigation that some maps just don't cover, nor do they tell you the location of the next gas station. Very helpful if you have kids. My work also requires occasionally locating destinations "in the boonies", that I've never been to previously. This county covers almost 1000 square miles, and frankly, I am not familiar with each and every road.

As far as backup cameras...do you have a clue how many children and pets are run over each year because their height is lower than your vehicle windows and mirrors? In parking lots, people can dart behind you after you've checked your mirrors, and the sensors prevent innocent people and pets from being killed.

The tire pressure gauge is just an added precaution, as most folks don't check tires at each fillup. Airbags provide a sense of security needed in today's world, especially with road rage nutjobs. Incidentaly, my desire for a big vehicle with lots of metal between us and the ground comes from living in a county full of rock trucks that have no regard for the law or other drivers on the roadway. One of my children was driving a smaller vehicle when she was run over by just such a truck driver and the vehicle was totaled. It was a miracle she was not seriously injured or killed.

My choice of vehicles has nothing to do with being "image conscious", or prestige. Safety is the number one issue. And I won't apologize to anyone for having the money to provide that for my family. It's been earned from hard work.

My spouse came from a family so poor that fried bologna was a weekly menu item and never experienced a steak until Junior year of high school. Attire consisted of two pairs of jeans and three shirts for the school year. We've both worked many years to get to where we are today, in unpleasant jobs most people would not consider doing nor be capable of. We've put a child through college, and been blessed in such a way we can bless others less fortunate.

Oil and gas prices?...That's why this county has the boost it does to the economy. If not, we might all be driving Hondas.

Hey buddy...our Republican, oil-hungry, imperialist, BIG business controlled government is obsessed with oil, even to the point of invading other countries to control the flow of it. First the Middle East, next South America...

Hey 5:28...try reading. It says
c o u n t y, not country, and that's not what this post was about anyway.

Not happy with the U.S government? You are always welcome to pick another country to live. But most folks would rather just moan, gripe and whine, not realizing just how blessed they are to live in the good ol' USA. Despite all her flaws, and faults, I wouldn't want live any other place. Nor, considering all she has provided for so many, would I disrespect her by comments such as yours.

If we are obsessed with oil, it is with just cause. Most products we use are by-products of oil. Soaps, shampoo, plastics, rubber, etc. Our transportation that delivers these products use fuel, be it by truck, boat, planes, you name it, it takes fuel to get it here. Last time I checked, Democrats used these same products and were just as dependent on the same forms of transportation. How about you?
