The South Rises Again In Wise County

In case you missed it, Channel 8 did a small piece on the Confederate Flag being displayed in the Wise County Courthouse. Commissioner Robert Rankin made an appearance as did attorney Bill Burdock. The clip is here. (My obsession with uploading to YouTube.com continues).

That's just great. It's funny how people compain about how everyone thinks Wise County is redneck and backwards. If you want to change that view....then stop pulling crap like this.

I'm embarrassed to tell people I'm from Wise County because of stuff like this.

I understand the whole "Heritage not hate" thing....but the flag has a negative connotation which you will NEVER change.

Did you notice that when they interviewed John Adams it said "John Adams Wise County President"?!!

Amazing how dressed up most of these "interviewees" were for this momentous occasion.

Classy folks!

Mixed signals in Decatur. What if Channel 8 news took a look at the new 5 story hospital on Hwy 51 while up in Wise County to interview folks about the confederate flag being honored in the people's courthouse, the center of county government.

What mixed signals are the county leaders sending to anyone thinking about moving up here? The leaders of Decatur are spending over 100 million dollars on facilities for future growth. The county is growing at a steady growth of 3% a year.

One big signal sent out to the MetroPlex is Wise County is not progressive. It is being influenced by those who live in the past or the county commissioners would have told a descendant from a prominent family to take the confederate flag to the Wise County Historical museum!

The Confederate Flag is offensive because it is a symbol of segration and a very sad time in the history of our country.

Sons of Confederate Veterans may be prominent in Decatur political circles; however, the negative impact they are having on our county will not support millions spent for future growth!

It is time Decatur and the county leaders decide if they want progress or want to remain a backward redneck county!

It is time we had the debate and decide who we are and where we are going and plan for it.

Channel 8 news didn't come to Wise County to cover something good that happened. It came to cover a very negative event for the County. The fact that the group sponsoring the event are so out of touch or simply don't care about offending so many of their own citizens, is a very selfish act on their part.

The image of the County embracing the past under the disquise of honoring history on a local TV news channel is proof leadership must change at the county level!

Busniess owners, realtors, local chambers and home builders need to take notice! Negative news does not promote growth and prosperity.

You would think that Rankin would dress up a little. Hell "road" Commissioners that make a $12,000 vehicle allowance could use some of that money to buy some nice dress clothes and wear a tie. Look at the Ft. Worth and Dallas Commissioners in suits when they are on TV. All so "WE" don't look like a redneck from Wise County. Out tax dollars need to be spent on emergency services in the next budget, not the commissioners. I recently got a copy of the budget and was amazed at what the "Commissioners" have done to INFLATE their salaries as well as their FOREMANS and others. It looks like a stipend of $600.00 gets paid each year for the COMMISSIONERS staff that has a Jailer License. Those guys fill the pot holes with FREE inmates. What my bitch is: The Certifications at the S.O. are $100.00 less according to the budget I got from the Auditor. Looks like the COMMISSIONERS have to be one up on eveyone. I will announce against Rankin very soon and get money back to where it needs to be.

Well said, 8:07. Why didn't they interview the numb nut from Bowie who started all this? Why didn't he go to the Montague County Commissioners and get them to fly that flag there? It was WRONG for our commissioners to crater to that man, who is and never was not a prominent citizen of Wise County. It was not a "compromise". Since when can they not just say NO, go to the historical societies or museums and fly it there? It was a cop out, pure and simple. And I for one, want commissioners who can say NO if they need to. This whole story sends a terrible message about Wise County.

I don't know who you are 8:08, but congratulations to you for having the courage to run for public office.

And it is an interesting thing. When one gets elected and actually sits on the court, the view is likely a whole lot different than from the outside perspective.

And so it goes.

bigcatdaddy - If you are so embarrassed to live here then get the hell out! If one of you idiots knew what the Confederate Flag really stood for and didn't just assume that it was about race.. this would not be an issue.

As far as the Sons of the Confederate Veterns having a negative impact on the county, that is just crazy. That group of men would give you the shirt off of their back and help anyone in this county regardless! You really do need to know these men to understand them!

This thing is getting blown way out of proportion. Granted most people relate any Confederate Flag to slavery and that brings negative attention. However the commissioners did make a compromise which in the end will cause much less attention than if the Flag was flying on the pole. The man from Bowie belongs to the Sons of Confederate group that is based out of Decatur. That is why Wise County was approached. If you don't allow this portion of history, whether you like it or not, be displayed in the courthouse or public places then you can't permit other historical events be displayed either. I actually think it is probably one of the better decisions the commissioners have made in some time.

Hey! All you "transplants" that don't like it here, LEAVE!!!! I don't remember ever seeing an invitation published ANYWHERE inviting ANYONE to move to Decatur OR Wise County (except for the realestate agents raping the land and getting rich so they can move on and do the same thing to someone else). All you damn people are doing is making a mess out of our communities just like you did down in the metromess you came from (alcohol, exploding school populations, draining resources, complaining about gravel roads, etc.). Go back and lay in the bed you made for yourselves down south and quit being like the annual egrets that show up, crap on everything, then move on to mess up someone elses home.

9:22...I don't live in Wise County anymore. Perhaps you need to read my last paragraph again. I understand that you view it as a heritage issue. Problem is, other people don't see it that way....and I seriously doubt that you are going to be able to educate them.

9:27 So you think Channel 8 news was here to interview Rankin and other locals because the commissioners made an outstanding decision! Or the best decision they have ever made.

Doesn't it seem a little strange that hiding the Confederate Flag in some corner in the Courthouse would make its way to Channel 8 news?

Are county officals that great or are out of touch with how offensive the confederate flag is to others?

Some will say they are great. Others will say their decision was offensive and wrong.

Sons of Conferate Veterans are well organized. Go to their National web site. It is an organized effort to display the Conferate flag with instructions on how to go about it at the local level.

Would a proclaimation of observing the historical moment when Wise County seceded from the Union have been adequate? Another historical moment was the hanging of men who refused to fight in the Civil war was history also. Check out the Wise County Historical Museum where the flag should be along with where the hanging took place.

History is history and the ugly part of the war should be told along with those whom would glorify it.

If history is history, then we should also display photos of the segregation of small children who wanted to go to a decent school but could not because of the color their skin. The flag that is displayed in our Courthouse was part of that and is about that.

3:54 - very good post!.....no person in their right mind would argue with your historical perspective.

Why did Clyde McMurray (the man behind all of this) come to WISE COUNTY with this? Why did he not propose this to Montague County where he is from. If flying this flag, or placing it in a courthouse is so important, why is it not flown or presented in the Montague County Courthouse?

And let's go one step further - this is historical - Montague County AND Wise County have in place great places for research into wars - why they were started, how they progressed, how they ended. In our county we have the Wise County Historical Musuem - Montague County has a Historical Committee for the same purpose.

In a museum, this flag could have become a permanent part of history.

Will it be permanent in the Wise County Courthouse?

Anybody know?

The Commissioners got fooled on this deal.

There is no "Confederate History Month" in Texas.

The SCV showed a resolution that only passed the Senate. It didn't pass the House.

I have no idea why the commissioners didn't call B.S. on that guy and send him back to Bowie.

Anonymous said...

7:16 - there may have been one reason - political.

McMurray is identified with the "Sons of the Confederacy" in Wise County......(Montague doesn't have such a group?)

.....so who in Wise County is in this group?

Anybody we know currently serving in our Wise County Commissioner's Court?

Interesting stuff here!

Why is it every time some one complains about "how stupid" some of the decisions are in Wise County you have some "Trailer Trash Redneck" telling you to ...

MOVE IF YOU DONT LIKE IT...

Well Guess what ... I am not moving and I will continue to point out some of you "Tooth Less Wonders" ...

The days of Back Woods ... Trailer Trash ...Cousin Loving Rednecks are over ...

If I could give a suggestion .... put the wheels on your homes (plz remove the skirting)and you move out or a better suggestion could be ...

Get a Job ...
Quit getting drunk & Doped up ..
Send your kids to school ..
And get over the civil war ...

anon 10:25 - Now that is really a way to prove your point... Call everyone bad names and say that they live in trailers, drunk and without a job! Nice way to show how mature you are!

I did not tell bigcatdaddy to move because he was upset with a decision made by our commissioners. I told him to move because he said that he was embarrassed to tell people he was from here.

I will say this again for anyone that didn't understand the first time. The Confederate Flag is not about race! If any of you could focus on the true meaning of the Flag this would not be an issue but no, y'all can not do that. You would rather fall into the trap that society has set, it is called racism!

I am proud to be from Wise County and proud to be from Texas. I am also a proud home owner and a proud parent of two very smart children, who actually attend school and make the all A honor roll every 6 weeks! Oh, and guess what I have even been able to hold down a job for over 10 years now! Sorry, anon 10:25 but not all of us are uneducated, jobless, trailer trash!!!

Yours truly,
ANON 9:22a.m.

ANON 9:22a.m.

Psst ....

Everyone is laughing at Wise County ... Not laughing with ...

There are alot of Wonderfull hard working good people in Wise County but it is unfortunate we are known to be ...

Dopers ..
Trailer Trash ..
Red Necks ...

I for one want to change that ..

But it is hard when in reality we have commissioners that are members of the Klan or give the wink to these types.

You have confused truth with reality ... Any type of Rebel/Confederate flag symbolizes racism regardless how innocent it is meant to be.

I am sorry but that is all I hear when I tell people I live in Wise County & I am not moving but I am voting :)

We have to be Smarter ...

I'll take the Confederate flag any day over the MEXICAN flag being carried in our USA!! In Decatur (behind Dairy Queen) there is a car dealership that flies the MEXICAN flag! Don't profess to be AMERICAN whilst you wave the flag of another country! If you wish to partake of our freedoms, then become AMERICAN! Confederate flag?? Maybe it's time to REMEMBER THE ALAMO!!!

Seems lots of folks have lost lives and shed blood to make sure that the Stars and Stripes remained the flag that flies over our country. How DARE others bring their flags here as though we should honor them! Wonder when schools will be required to fly every flag of every nationality, represented by its students, on the flagpole outside the school house? Wouldn't that be the politically correct thing to do? How should we handle that?
