Random Wednesday Morning Thoughts

  • I've started a new book: Jon Krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith. A true crime book with a look at the Mormon faith. I love that author, and I've got to study up on what makes Romney tick.
  • I watched the end of the Heat/Thunder game last night. LeBron suffered cramps and came out of the game as the Thunder tied it up. He then came off the bench, hit a three, and then went back  to the bench. Even if he had had a compound fracture, he had to at least try.  LaDanian Tomlinson still is haunted for not coming back in the game after an "injury" during a Chargers' game.
  • I'd like to see a chart of the number of jobs held by travel agents and stockbrockers over the last 15 years.
  • The Shiner dad who killed the man allegedly molesting his daughter was no-billed by the grand jury yesterday --  the most predictable news ever. But I haven't heard a single news organization question what proof there was of the molestation.
  • The Fan's Gavin Dawson last night said he thought Ranger announcer Dave Barnett's strange fifth-base-robbery-henchman comment was just a flub and that the migraine headache story was just a cover. What an idiot.
  • When Mrs. LL resent her passport in for the name change because the government screwed it up the first time, it was reissued and received back within seven days.
  • Fox 4 had two cops in studio last night to demonstrate how those spike strips are used to stop someone evading the police.  I thought that would be a failed bit, but it was fairly interesting.
  • Actor Nick Stahl went missing last month, was found, and now has gone missing again
  • The defense calling Jerry Sandusky's wife to the stand serves no purpose. And she may be in as much denial as he is.
  • Bridgeport coach and former Chico head coach is going to Alvord to be defensive coordinator.
  • I'm not sure what reality show was on my TV last night, but I think Mrs. LL has a crush on Jenny McCarthy.
  • Not much of a mention of Juneteenth yesterday.
  • Update can be found here if you are having trouble this morning finding it. (All Chico high school students are receiving iPads?  I'm beginning to think there is some country wide Apple conspiracy going on.)

One good thing about the laptops and no books is...no curving of spines caring books. Change is good...it is what makes the world go 'round; and, people need to stop complaining. You young parents are beginning to sound like your parents when they were presented with changes.

Under the Banner of Heaven is fantastic. You will really enjoy it. It provides a lot of history of the Mormon faith, but the family at the center of the book is not what you'd call mainstream Mormon.

Oddly enough, after reading it, I spent a lot of time thinking about the factual evidence given in support of Mormonism...and then applied a little of the same analysis to the Christian faith in general. Definitely thought-provoking.

But I haven't heard a single news organization question what proof there was of the molestation.

Didn't you read the articles???!!! The victim and her little brother were heard screaming. The father went to investigate and found the messican with his pants and underwear around his ankles and the messican was on top of his little daughter.

The local law said the fathers story and the evidence jived.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, the child was examined after the attack and showed signs of molestation.

Biggest mistake Chico has made was firing Coach Hart! They replaced him with a person who does nothing (literally) all day long but gets paid more than Coach Cartwright at Boyd who won games and championships!! At least Hart would work around the district doing work and at least attending MS games and practices!! Chico pays it current head coach $80,000 to coach ONE sport and teach NO classes!! How much time does one need to be an AD at a 1A school? Not all day--every day! Winning 20% of your games in Chico gets you a $10,000 pay raise---LOL! What a joke!!!

I've read "under the banner", very good book. Incredibly informative, not only in its examination of the Lafferty brothers, but the history of Mormons and violence in that particular faith that has already been all but forgotten.

When you reach thd part about the Mountain Meadows Massacre, ask yourself how this episode wasn't included in American history class.

Very thought provoking, and all criticism that one may have for the Mormons... Well you can direct the same to every recognizable faith that exists today.

Don't read thd book to judge one particular person. All people of faith are probably completely ignorant of their religion's deceptive and violent pasts.

10:22-- quit your bellyaching and get with the program. Our kids need to know how to use this technology. But more than that, it levels the playing field for those students whose families can't afford internet or technology of any kind. And yes, there are families like that right here in Wise County.
I'm not from Bridgeport, BTW, but I know Mary Howard and she'll make sure these iPads will be used educationally and in a fun way.

Anonymous said...

I would take that girl over an ipad anyday. Thanks for the pick BG.

Have you visited their homes, 11:06? Do you factually know from investigating every single one of those families that you feel sorry for?

What can students do with technology? Here are some resources where you can see what students use on an everyday basis.
-Check out student presentations created online at Prezi.
-Look at the videos for academic reinforcement at Khan Academy.
-See the thousands of flashcards created and shared for vocabulary or factual information at the flashcard exchange.
-Go to the Bridgeport ISD instructional technology website and look at all the resources available for staff and students.
-Links are listed below for those resources mentioned.

Yes, students need technology with them at school!
Are any of us perfect at using it yet? No...
Are we willing to learn and explore new ways of teaching? Yes!

11:06 How does it level the playing field if they don't have internet at home? They are not much use without the internet. So, the best way to level the playing field is through good computer labs that are available before, during lunch and after school.

10:22 is right, it's a big waste of money. Decatur's laptops are used 90-95% for personal and entertainment usage and 5-10% for education.

All technology guru's in their district promise how wonderfully they will be used and this is the silver bullet for education, but it's all lies to justify their existence and spending all this money.

Then I downloaded the image (it's already deleted, I don't collect 'em.) When I pulled the image up in Windows Photo Gallery, lo and behold, a series of tags came up: "Brazilian, busty, DJ, hips, mature, MILF (!), model, thickness," and finally what you are looking for, her name. 11.38 you are right about the DHS laptops. As a parent of high school student - he tells us daily how the teachers never use them. They are just a cool device to play games. When the teachers do not know what to do - what do you expect!! At least schools like Bridgeport and schools in metro area have Instructional Tech dept that write tech curriculum for teachers and support teachers!! DISD cannot even afford to do this and the tech laptop /iPad project is a joke!

Anonymous said...

iPads may level the playing field, but it won't be on astro turf.

I'm 11:06. I know these problems because I am a teacher. I have worked with kids in technology and they are behind because they don't have it at home. Even if they don't have internet at home, they can type papers, etc.
And yes, most kids use the laptops for personal use at times, but definitely in the classroom also. Their books are on there in many cases, they can keep up with grades, have instant resources capabilities. The possibilities are endless. In some cases, it has inspired parents to get the internet.
Come into the new century. I'm not a naive sob. Being naive would suggest I would think everyone has internet. I'm realistic.

1:22--they DO have technology classes! They are meant for the kids to learn how to use them, then take that knowledge and apply it to other classes.
I don't know where you naysayers are living, but the world is going high tech. If we don't educate our students to learn this, we are doing them a grave disservice. Of course, not everyone uses them to the best of their ability and not every teacher does. But the majority do.

I guess you believe everything your kids tell you--like none of the teachers use them. Gee, I'll bet your kids never make up other stories either.

Remember kids? They usually have nothing positive to say about their elders, so take what they say with a grain of salt. Better yet, visit the teachers and find out. If you are dissatisfied with what the teacher says about their computer usage, contact the principal. But really, try supporting something innovative that the schools do. Brag that your children go to school in a community that is so progressive, kids have the latest in technology. Many others will be impressed!

Hey Wordy--there was this girl I met down in Austin about five years ago. We found true love at Maggie Mae's and for three days we tore up the sheets like a couple of rabbits. Somehow we sobered up and then lost track of each other. She had light brown hair, the face of an angel, and the body of a goddess. She had a little birthmark shaped like a crescent moon on her hip and I think her name was Wendy.

From time to time I fondly remember those few days and would really like to hook up with her again. Any chance of you twistin' and tweakin that internet thing and finding her for me? C'mon, help a brother out.

Not a coward but need to keep my job! I have talked to people in charge but basically told to mind my own business. Go talk to the teachers in Chico (the ones not afraid to talk) and you will find most of the teachers are fed up with their AD and all the money being spent on coaches and athletics! Coaches who only teach 3 periods out of 8 and usually 2 of those classes have less than 4 students in them! They don't mind pay raises, if deserved, to be given out but to give $10,000 for winning 4 games in 2 years is insanity!! Thats on top of the $3,000 he got last year for going winless!! The same problems that people complained about the previous coach are still a problem. There are a lot of things going on in Chico ISD that are not good so don't let the blowhard talking heads convince you otherwise!

Carter didnt get a raise last year and has yet to see one this year. In every school in the county and the state for that matter the AD is paid like the Principals. In my opinion they need to pay him what the principals were paid over the last two years. Seems they got a bargain. He will get his when the teachers get theirs. Problems before Carter got the job were out of control, problems before the new HS Principal were out of control. Both have changed drastically for the good. The problem in Chico is on the campus after elemnetary and before HS. You can see that from the scores .....if the coaches teaching were so bad why did the HS score 90% or better in every area of the TEKS test? Coaches were teaching those classes. Would you turn down a raise at McDonalds 10:53?

Anonymous said...

Why dont yall ask Pete Hart if they pay the AD in Chico enough.....I bet his answer is HELL NO! Chico is a tough place to coach beacuse you have idiots that are always fighting the system. Case in point 10:53... which I bet is a member of the JH staff or a family who thinks they run the place.

Anonymous said...

Chico needs to fire all their coaches and put that money into paying good teachers and improving the academic performance of their schools. I could give a rat's ass how fast someone can run or how high they can jump. However, I am interested in what grade they made in calculus.

We need to remove sports from our schools. Each town or community could sponsor a football team if they felt it would help the youngsters. It may help them run faster or jump higher but that is about it. Those two talents have nothing to do with preparing someone for adult life and earning a living.

LLDQFan said...

2:30 I wouldn't mind bragging if I saw that these computers were being utilized for educational purposes. Let's say your assumption is true and that my kids were lying to me about whether they were using them in the classroom or not. When they come home night after night not having any homework assignments to be done on the computers, except one who occasionally had to type up some notes on a word processor, then I consider those $1500 computers to be a waste of taxpayer money and a nice toy for the kids to play around on.

I have a question about 5:19's post. "He will get his when the teachers get theirs." Are the teachers at Chico ISD getting a $10,000 pay raise this coming year? If so, I am applying there tomorrow because my school district never gives out pay raises that big--to anyone!

Anonymous said...

Chico ISD sounds like it is doing more backstabbing and blabbing than some of the ladies at FBC in Decatur!

Hey 5:19 ie...ttop
to be an administrator and get paid like one you must have a masters degree, ask the high school teachers if anything has gotten better at the high school or if they even like your hs principal. there are as many second chance athletes know as there has ever been ie... the one that came back after quitting and told a coach to F off. they did so well on there scores that half of the 9th and 10th grade are in summer school.

5:19....You are so funny and naive!! You have no idea what you are talking about. Carter did get a 3% raise at the end of his first year which was the same year that all the rest of the staff had a pay freeze. It is open record go ask the school to see the truth. To be paid like an administration position (ex. Principals) you need to have a masters and admin classes. Your opinion does not count but, the rules and laws are what counts which Chico does not follow. Check Carter out...he only has a BS and can only teach PE and History. And yes he did get a $10,000 raise it will go into effect in Sept. when the new school year goes into effect. Not to mention he got this raise when their was a pay freeze for the district.....Chico Admin and School Board are idiots!!! Don't let anyone fool you....The HS is still out of control. The varsity ftball team broke into the old MS and vandilized the gym and nothing happened to them. Athletes cut class, cuss teachers and coaches and nothing happens. There are fights going on in the locker rooms and hallways weekly...if you don't think it is true juct check out the internet and you can watch them....yeah great discipline going on at Chico HS. Coaches with only 3 to 4 classes then off the rest. Only one or two classes with more than 10 kids in a class. Check with the teachers...things are not good at the HS. Only a few kids have to follow the rules. Depending on who you are and how loud mommy and daddy yell will determine if you will follow the rules. Now for the scores...Elem was rated Exemplary, MS was on test failure away from Exemplary so rated Recognized, and the HS was rated "Unexceptable"...so which campus has the problems...the scores speak for themselves. A fourth of the 9th and 10th grades are in summer school for low English and Math scores this year...which were taught by coaches! It is time for the Admin of Chico to wake up and quit believing the lies they are being fed!!!!
