"English. Do You Speak It?"

USA TODAY - During testimony at a committee hearing this week in Austin, a Texas state senator [Chris Harris from Arlington] interrupted a Spanish speaker to say that it was "insulting" that he was not addressing the panel of lawmakers in English.  Antolin Aguirre, of the Austin Immigrant Rights Coalition, was testifying against a bill that would help crack down on illegal immigrants in Texas, KTRH radio reports.

Aguirre, who came to the United States in 1988 and speaks some English, spoke through an interpreter.

(Right around the 40 second mark is when things kick off.)

When will the USA Today learn that the correct term is TRANSLATOR, not interpreter??

Anonymous said...

It's about damned time. We gotta stop the coddling!!!

Anonymous said...

Why are we even letting this guy speak against a bill that would make us safer?
Does this fine spanish speaking gentleman not want the country in which he resides to be safer?
Maybe he should rethink his where his home country should be located.....better yet.....maybe WE should rethink where his home country should be.

So, he's been here since 1988 and still wants to speak Mexican? Is he in the U.S. legally? I agree with Sen. Harris.
IF YOU ARE HERE ILLEGALLY, GO BACK TO YOUR COUNTRY!!!!

if my ancestors had addressed a panel of lawmakers in Irish they'd put knots on their head faster than they could rub 'em.

Funny, he was speaking perfect ENGLISH when we started answering the question. He suddenly forgot how?!?!?!

that "senator" is a f*cktard and should be shamed. if you cannot grasp the reality that languages spoken in any given region in the world can 1) change over time and 2) can number more than 1, then you are just myopic, simpleton.

also the rest of the public-facing free market has embraced the fact there are more than one language spoken in this country, these politicians, who are supposed to be serving their constituants (who, in Texas, happen to be a hispanic majority) should be a little more tolerant. unf*cking acceptable.

I do not see a problem with making Spanish the official language of North Mexico.

Adolph Oliver Bush said...

9:44, your the f*cktard. People that immigrated here thru Ellis Island learned to speak the language.

The free market has not "embraced" more than one language, it has reacted to the fact that some customers will not speak the language of this country. Free enterprise wants their money so business owners reacted by hiring bi-lingual people.

It was insulting for the spic to not address our leaders in the our language.

Even the President of Mexico speaks English....well maybe Spanglish.

Ricardo Perry said...

It is unfortunate that a state senator or any government representative has to react so disrespectfully to a guest. In truth, he is just showboating. There was a translator.

American history also shows other immigrant groups (italians, germans, swedes, etc) which came to this nation and did not learn english in the first generation; the succeeding generations, however spoke only english.

9:44 go home to messico. The idiot should be deported. this is America and our language here is ENGLISH. Learn it or leave. Pretty simple. They should've kicked him halfway back to messico.

The Senators are always bashing the people they serve, go to Austin and see.

Send the pepper belly back to the country he wants to communicate with... it's not the USA.

9:44 needs to go with him. I'll pay the fare if you guysl turn over your passport when you arrive! Then you can speak any way you want. dumbasses

Freaking Mexicans. He could have at least read from a printed paper. Having no sense of pride is the biggest problem with them.
He won, apparently he had the right to to do.

seriously, what has that guy been doing for 23 years that he cant speak english fluently? tells me that he just refuses to learn. lazy lazy lazy

Scott said...

Ricardo Perry:

This man was the one showing disrepect, not Senator Harris! he has been in this country for 23 years and was speaking English fine at the first of the video. Now, all of a sudden he forgets how to speak it when testifying in front of a legislative panel.

He is the showboat.

I think that English speaking Americans should have to pay for discrimination they have exhibited against other people speaking other languages. I wish to be paid for this discrimination that prevented me and my family from keeping our German language. Perhaps we need an education system the reintroduces these lost languages to the descendants of those who were robbed of their ethnicity.

Anonymous said...

AOB you sound like a real smart person using the word "spic". You could use a good *ss kicking.

Also your reference to how we address our "leaders" tells us you're just a big puss.

I think from now on i am going to speak my broken spanish every time i go in for jury duty or renew my car registration.

Doesn't citizenship require the ability to speak and understand the language. If an individual wants to speak before the lawmakers of this country then he should speak the accepted language. If I lived in Russia or Japan or Mexico or where ever and I wanted a government official to take me seriously then I would take the time to learn the language so I could address the official in their language. Most of the people coming here are more worried about what they can get for free.

Anonymous said...

9:44 I disagree with you; however, surely you can be objective enough to understand that this man's message would have been MUCH better received, had he gone to the trouble to master that message in the language of the people he intended to deliver it to. It isn't like he was speaking for himself, he was representing a group for Pete's sake, and that group's message was lost in a "who dissed whom" debate. He had his chance and lost it. This country presently owes China a whole bunch of money, and when the time comes that we have to send someone over there to see about restructuring our debt with them, i sure hope that guy or gal has enough common sense to ask them to cut us some slack in their own stinkin' language.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the Senator. Further, it dismays me that this is all an effort to rid the US of its cultural heritage. It's funny that we allow others to come into our country, and now they want to change OUR culture to theirs.
Here's a question: Why ami I not allowed to celebrate being white without being labeled a racist? Yet, we are forced to accept changes to convenience the black and hispanic cultures. If I wanted to celebrate "White day" or whatever name I could think of, I'd be labeled a racist bigot.

wordkyle said...

If you really want to convince and influence someone, you speak their language. Aguirre wanted to make a bigger political statement than the words that came out of his mouth. The Senator's comments fit perfectly with that agenda. It was the type of situation race-based organizations dream of.

10:39, you do know that our German ancestors DID teach their children German...up until WWI. All of my German ancestors came over before 1848 and were bilingual until my parents generation.

I think giving up the German language is a small price to pay for not being in Europe for two world wars. Oh, and being free to play golf without a license.

Just my 2 cents.

Really?
Spic should always be replaced
with pepper belly in polite conversation.

Working for several governments in other countries, it is very unusual for someone to not speak the national language (even if they were not from that country), Only representatives from other countries or special needs cases spoke with translators.

I am pro-immigration reform, but anti-discrimination, I believe when a citizen is speaking to a government (no matter how small) a grasp of the English language is a necessity (unless you are a foreign national or special needs.

As for us "whites" having to bend over backwards to adjust to the needs of the minorities... Well, "whites" have controlled and disrespected other cultures for centuries in this country and only started helping the minorities in the last 30-40 years. Also, we "Americans" keep hiring the illegals, we're the reason why they are coming across the borders. Maybe the white people should start working those low wage jobs.

Typical that you want to be compensated from your perceived discrimination... Very typical...

If you truly want to reclaim you ethnicity, haul your entitled a$$ back to Germany. The USA will be much better off.

I have never gone to a foreign country EXPECTING them to know or learn English. As a matter of fact, I study their language and use it. Today's immigrants are just lazy and entitled. I make you and you family the same offer I did 9:44. Don't let the door hit you in the arse

Citizenship does NOT require that one speak English. In fact, we can do all the moaning and groaning we want about making everyone speak English but it will do no good! People, there is NO LEGAL LANGUAGE in this nation. Until Americans vote to make English the official and legal language of this nation, nothing says anyone must speak English. This is the "land of the free".. (except for the laws we must follow) and until ENGLISH is made the official language, there is no law to make anyone follow. We can start by making English the official language of Texas. That hasn't even happened yet!!!

Scott said...

12:28 -

Sure it is not the official language, but immigrants should want to learn it in order to honor their new country.

Take a look at immigrants from Japan or many other countries. The first thing they do is to learn English. That is why we don't have to have everything translated into Japanese (or whatever their native language is) and classes taught in their native language as well.

Immigrants from Mexico are the only ones who expect our country to conform to them instead of the other way around.

Anonymous said...

12:56 I hear you completely, but you are in a different mind set than these "new citizen wannabes" that are coming here. They are coming to America TO exercise their "freedom" and to force their culture upon us because they DO have the freedom to do just that, right? Yes, people who come here SHOULD respect our expectations and our customs, but they don't. They expect just the opposite.

Gary said...

It never ceases to amaze me how racist people are. We all adopt this "free" country attitude when it suits us, but rarely back up our "principles" during crunch time.

Historically, multiple languages have always existed and been used in every country. The creation of "pidgin" and "creole" languages are fine examples of this. The english language is another great example. It wasn't until the influence of Germanic, Nordic and Latin people began to mingle throughout Europe that the common English language came into existence. It is only natural that the regional language changes to support the people who inhabit the area.

To attempt to try and stop a regional majority from using their native language is as practical as trying to stop the ocean waves from reaching the shore.

My Comanche brothers and I seem to remember a similar situation from the late 1800s in Texas. Newly arrived/growing majority prefers its own language to that of the current residents? Seems to be happening again. Como se llama, por favor?

Try moving to Mexico and saying anything political. Displaying a US flag. You will be arrested on the spot and deported and jailed if you coome back. Try being there without a visa or driving a US plated car without a permit. They will take it and keep it. The double standard in Mexico is
quite funny ( unless you transgress )

Anonymous said...

A major historical change is upon us and no one can see it. There is a major migration into the United States from Mexico. These immigrants reproduce much faster than the prior population. So the principles laid out by Darwin will come to be. And the language will revert to Spanish as it was prior to 1836.

Denney Crane said...

When a minority disrespects authority or a majority, liberals call it justified. But when I disrespect a minority, they call it racist.

He knew English, but refused to speak it. I have much more respect for someone communicating to me in broken English than in Spanish, which I also speak.

If you want respect, give it. If you want to disrespect something or someone I love, get ready for me to open up a can of whoopass.

Muslims have had this same attitude in Europe for several years and it seems to be working real well, as long as citizens don't practice freedom of speech when criticizing their religion or the Koran... Better yet, why don't those brave Mexicans publically burn a Koran instead of an American flag? I can't wait for Sharia law to kick in. They will be running for Mexico so fast the roadrunners couldn't catch them...

Sorry ya'll. Its been a long time since that profile was filled out. I forgot it really doesn't show anything.

My name is Dodson. Add that to the info on the profile and if anon 10:51 still wants to whip my *ss he or she can find me.

I want everyone out there to know that none of this has anything to do with racism against people from Mexico. I have GOOD friends that are Hispanic. I have good neighbors that are Hispanic. I work side by side with good people who are Hispanic.

They are all bilingual and speak English in the presence of others who cannot speak Spanish.

I used a term I shouldn't have and that irritated anon 10:51. I have already apologized for that in an earlier post, but I will re-iterate: 10:51 you are correct. That did not make me sound very smart.

That doesn't change my opinion however that the man addressing our elected leaders should have done so in English. I don't know why anon 10:51 didn't like me calling them leaders.

The earlier comment by someone that guy seemed pretty smart because of how much attention he has gotten....he got attention for failure to use English not the issue he was talking about.

I believe the people he was addressing would have been much more receptive to his comments had they been in English.

I've told you who I am. Who are you anon 10:51?

Gary said...

Adolph:

I can understand your point that people should speak the native language as a sign of respect.

But, as a bilingist, I can conceed that I often find myself in situations where my ability to speak Spanish reaches its limits and I have no choice but to rsort to my native tongue, English. When discussing complex or sophisticated ideas like religion, socio-economics, governmental policy, etc. - I can undersatnd the need to use one's native tongue.

Can I speak Spanish? Sure. Would I consider myself fluent? I would. WOuld I be confortable explaiing the differences between Eastern Orthodox Christianity and the Southern Baptist doctrines in Spanish? No I would not.

I may or may not have made my "point" but I tried.

Gary: I believe you made your made your point very well. I am far from bilingual but when I visit Mexico, I use all the Spanish I have, as you suggested, out of respect.

Anon 4:28, I'm sorry you feel that way, I apologized twice for my indiscretion. That is not enough for you and you are entitled to your opinion. If you will recall, I apologized BEFORE you knew where I worked, so it had nothing to do with apeasing you for the loss of your business. It was because I regretted the use of the slur.

4:28, why don't you lay off the "racist" card! You are so full of bs! People all over the country have slurs for every other race. I'm white and have been referred to as "cracker" "honkey" and many others. I don't whine or cry RACIST to those who make such comments even though those terms ARE considered racist. Our country is full of people like you who threaten others for the littlest thing. In the posted video, the man stated he has lived here since 1988. For him to be here that long and not be able to address OUR Legislature in English is deplorable! Many of these hispanics wish to turn Texas into their Mexico and I, for one, have a big problem with that! That isn't racist, that is simply an inherit desire for the survival and retention of American culture in MY OWN COUNTRY! If you're so bloomin' open to throwing out our American ways, then open your door to all the illegals and turn your paycheck over to them indefinitely. I'm sick and tired of able bodied human beings living off American's welfare! So let me say, people who steal are called thieves; people who murder are called murderers; --- so what's the problem with people who TAKE from this country and do not assimilate as Americans after years of TAKING being called what they are? If they want to be called American, then they need to step up and BE AMERICAN. You, on the other hand, can be a bit more protective of OUR CULTURE and stop threatening those of us who are already exercising that protection via our own opinions!
