I bet they save the slab! The fire trucks should have been warmed up all they do is drive them around towm to the cafe. dont they have something cheaper to drive.
Hey it could be worst, yall could have a piece of useless crap ladder truck like Bridgeport Fire Dept. They can't even drive it in town without breaking limbs off trees. ( But the main thing is, it did come from NEW YORK with 911 dust on it. HaHa Decatur can't say that.Bridgeport Wins again.#1
5:53 I guess if they had something cheaper to drive and then your house started burning you would get pretty pissed off that they couldn't save it and then all you would have is the "slab." Maybe you should worry about the family that lost everything and not worry about "Deroys" so called pimped out ride.
I kinda understand them driving the firetruck because if a fire breaks out it's faster to get there. One could argue that eating at the firehouse would be the obvious solution to not wasting taxpayer money but then we would probably be buying there lunch everyday so I call it a wash. I do wonder why there is an ambulance parked at a house on 1655 every holiday and icy day though. Saw it parked there Christmas morning and during the ice storm early this year. You would think it should stay where if it was needed it could be used. Isn't that a major liability to everyone?
I wonder if there have been issues with slow response times because they are allowed to take the ambulances home. I've seen one in town Bridgeport too.
Even if they ate at the firehouse everyday, they would still need to drive in a firetruck to the grocery store to buy food. Don't here anyone bitching about the PD driving patrol cars to a Restaurant...
Are the emt's being payed to stay at home? Is that safe having an ambulance out of service on an icy day? Are the firefighters on the clock for lunch just because they drive the fire truck? I have no clue how they are payed.
That's what are taxes are for? For a payed fire department to stand around and watch a house burn? That was a joke. How many Decatur firefighters does it take to put out a fire? Who knows cause they just stand around and bs while it burns!
So who's in charge of the EMT's then? If that's true about the ambulance sitting at a guys house during an ice storm then someones head needs to roll cause that sure isn't looking out for the safety and well being of the county.
Could you imagin the feeling. --yeah the fire department is here. Thank god our home is saved..... What? Yall are just going to watch it burn? But..but..but.
Give me a volunteer fire fighter any day. Someone that is there for only one reason and that's to put out a fire. Not cause he is being payed to watch it burn.
Can't wait for the obvious firemen comments of "wait till you need us and your tone will change". I submit exhibit A, barrys video. Can yall really say that anymore? Lol
Decatur is a combination Paid/volunteer dept. Quit bitching and go join so you can see what it is really like instead of sitting on your ass and making stupid comments.
OK, a bit of education is required to create a bit of understanding. First: There are firefighters standing outside as part of the operation. These folks are known as the Rapid Intervention Crew, aka rescue portion of the job. If a victim is located or a firefighter goes down in a burning building these guys go make the grab. These guys would rather be in the building with a hose, but they have the important assignment of Rescue. Second: They drive around in the engine so that they can respond ANY time to any location. This also allows them to learn the streets, hydrant locations, poor road conditions and such. They happen to run the errands, go to the store, change batteries in smoke detectors and teach your children not to burn down the house! I could go on, but it is irrelevant because a majority of those commenting here do not care how or why something is done, you just need to gripe! Respectfully, Someone who will burn up to drag your ass out!!!
Ahh, here we go again.... First off, you watched a 47 sec blurb of video, there is alot happening that most of you don't see. First off, the crew standing outside is a Rapid Intervention Crew..in the event of a victim being found or a firefighter being injured, or trapped, they are tasked with locating and rescuing them. They are to be ready to go and should not be involved in active firefighting. Next, if you'll notice about 15 seconds into the video, you can see the flames being extinguished and the smoke changes from black and brown to mostly white.....that is water being converted to steam....for those that don't know....thats what happens when water comes in contact with a fire..... The fire was contained to the attic and the rest of the house was saved.....Soooo, instead of hiding behind a computer and talking a bunch of trash.....swing on by the station and tell these folks thanks for doing your best to protect our lives and property.... Or...feel free to keep comments to yourself...
Call Wise County EMS and ask, or continue to speculate based on one or two events that you witnessed for a brief moment.
I can assure you that unless they are on a response, or broken down they are ready to respond 24/7. Just because they are not at the station waiting does not mean that they can not take a call. Afterall they are responsible for the entire County not just the town they are stationed, and last ime I checked it takes some time and a road to make all corners of the County!
No, sent from my Iphone.....but close....it's what I do between games of dominoes, spades and trivial pursuit..... Your probably just another guy that wishes he was a firenam!!!!!!
wellllll....you know since everyone here is asking and what-not...yeah WE'RE okay. thanks -__- my sister, her 3 yr and 2 week old that were in the house, made it out just fine...the firefighters were mostly in the BACK of the house, which was where most of the fire was. and thanks to the girl who pushed me out of the way to get it on video on her phone...when it was my house that was ON FIRE. that made my day..remember...KARMA :)
The majority of the above comments are a good example of why I don't comment on things I know nothing about. I am a professional firemen and know enough about the job to know that video is a great example of a small city department doing a great job with the limited resources its been provided by its governing body. They are keeping life safety as its number one priority and property conservation as its number two. If the citizens of Decatur truly think their should be more people holding water lines on that fire scene maybe they should talk to their city councilmen. I have no dog in this fight for I don't live or work in Decatur, but I do experience similar challenges in another suburban paid department. You folks should really learn more about fireground operations and the Incident Command System before making a fool of yourself by opening your mouth. Use the internet for something besides girly pics and sports. You'd be surprised what you might learn.
I bet they drive them all the time so they can beat Cliff to the fire house to drive. 1st one there gets to drive. I use to be one of them that was 1st to the house so I could drive.
For the people who don't know, The EMS has conplained so much about their job, that now the county has hired an outside company to do their out of county tranfers. Why? because they don't want to leave their little (love shack ) they stay in.They would rather watch tv and play games all day and let us foot the bill.( DO WHAT YOUR PAID TO DO )
I, (1:34) have the highest respect for volunteer firemen and all other unpaid community servants. I support my local volunteer department with donations every year. There are scores of volunteer firefighters in this county that have forgotten more about the fire service than I know. Much of that knowldege was accrued by them either spending their own money or raising their funds to attend schools and seminars. Not to mention the hours they spend away from their family to help yours. I simply identified myself as a professional firefighter for the sake of qualifying my opinion on the subject and setting myself apart from the rest of you keyboard quarterbacks that would rather pick apart someone elses choice of words than say something positive about the people that selflessly make their community a safer place to live.
I'm so glad everybody wants to just comment about the firefighters and emts. Do you not realize that a family lost their house? Do you even care about if everybody got out safely? You dont have anything else better to do then talk trash about the firefighters because of this one video. Let me inform you that I was there for the fire and the video didnt show the back of the house which was on fire where firefighters were in the back working on it. And if they were just standing around then the whole house wouldnt be standing. They contained the fire and it just took out the back part. Why dont you all stop talking trash and show some compassion for the victims. There was a 2 week old baby in the house when the fire started.
Super, lets go after the spelling of my name and how great your "real" job is. I guess they don't speak sarcasm where you're from. Never once did I say that myself, any firefighter, cop, EMT, volunteer, paid or otherwise was better that anyone. You saw a 47 second video and because you don't have the entire picture, assume that a fire crew is standing there watching a house burn, when in fact they have one of the most important jobs on the fire ground. Second to that is the fact that you begin to bash those people and expect no one to come to their defense??? Not that your job at a bank, school, McDonalds, pilot, maintanence mechanic, politician, executive whatever is not important, but dont attempt to belittle the very people who are sworn to protect you, your property and your family.....thats just ignorant....Not to mention the fact that a majority of the guys/girls in your area are volunteers ( your neighbors) and are doing it for free. So again, I urge you to go on down to the fire house and tell those folks thanks for being there...........
1. Justin, u know that is a sad situation when DVFD roles on the scene & immediately requests the help of B'Port & Rhome. We never did that unless we were about to loose the entire scenerio. One story structure on South Lane, we used to have the men and equipment (thanks to the city) to do a "knock down" w/in 3 minutes. Grapevine has changed your way of being aggressive.
2. Engine 51 (115 or 215 whetever the # today) had Grandpa Rex and other PD officers "hoofing" hose to the nearest hydrant. The full time paid driver/engineer should have laid the line from Main & Lane St.
3. Ventilate a roof with flames already protrudung through the structure at time of attack... PRICELESS.
4. No more, did Rhome and B'Port roll the hoses?
5. Chief (or other substitute) rolls on scene w/out an evaluation and has to don gear for an Indident Command Scene, again "PRICELESS".
Laird in Florida, one time Commander of DVFD. Cliff u need to take charge of the "old gang".
I think he took the bait. you need to not take the bait set back and watch me get somebody else mad it's sooo much fun and your blood pressure will come back down. Your way too EZ
What IS Decatur going to do? There are so many "crappy" houses in the downtown area. Most of them need razing or burning down. Until Decatur rids itself of the low rent hispanic dwellings, Decatur will look like trash. CLEAN UP YOUR DOWN TOWN HOMES and make Decatur the historic community it is. I'm sick of these trashy homes around the square. Some ordinance should be put in place to clean these dumps up, or raze them.
For the comment about the "low rent hispanic dwellings" I am a hispanic woman that lives in a $250,000 home in a upscale DECATUR housing edition...not all the crappy low rent houses are hispanic there is alot of "WHITE" trash homes in this town also. 9:33why didn't you leave your name?
Mary I bet your not a Wetback are ya. You can spot them at WalMart they have 2 in the buggy and one on the way so they can work the system and get a 250,00 home for me and Obammy to pay for. Why oh why do they speak up knowing we will rip them apart????
10:05AM- great point, all you little douche bags need to quit ranting and raving about how lazy and bad our FD is when u really dont have a flying fuck what goes on. its a little thing called education!!! GET ONE and quit commenting on issues that u dont have a clue about.these guys dont just stand around and do nothing. its part of the damn rescue crew. just wait til your ass is burning in a building then you'll really appreciate the hero that saves you but until then STFU
10:06, shut up and sit your fat ass down in the dispatcher chair where u are employed. We'll discuss education @ later date, u will be amazed how many blog responders are smarter than u and others @ your work place.
4:31- im not a damn dispatcher, im a retired fire fighter and fire chief for 30 years so once again, i guarantee there are many bloggers on here that are more educated are fire fighting than me so SHUT THE HELL UP!!!

How about Droy's pimped out ride
you people would think alot different about the Decatur Fire Dept. if this was happening to yall good work guys
I would have to agree with 5:53
all they are is a bunch of lazy hose rollers

Firefighters pay for their own meals, either at a cafe or in the station.
The fire department is a city issue...the ambulance is a county issue.

Golden video Barry. You should so send that to Fox4. Or sell it to towns for what firefighters should NOT do when a house is burning.

Laird , I think you've got the wrong Justyn.... Don't know about roof vent... Didn't see it in the video... Or the bunked out Chief.... Maybe it was chilly out???? :) I've don't work in Wise county but know some guys that do.... People who don't understand the fire service don't realize how much pride is taken in our profession and for people to bash a crew for something the general public doesn't understand is a kick in the crotch. Was this fire worthy of a page in an IFSTA manual??? I don't know, but I'm sure they did the best they could with what they had.... To the anonymous antagonist....."Touché LaFloure" .... You played the part of a douche to a T.... Now , head down to the firehouse and ask how you can start volunteering ....I'm sure you'll need some community service hours in the future.....
