So I was reading some riveting story online at the Messenger's site about a bunch of Newark folks rioting or something about access to a boat ramp. Just when the story was getting good and I'm about to find out whether the boy really does get the girl, my eyes smash into that red banner that tells me I've got to subscribe to find out what happened.
Is this a new policy? Or has it always been there.

Messenger Limiting Online Articles?

no one really buys the damn $.75 Decatur Messenger so they look at it online. now you cant look at that without being charged.
It's been there for a bit - I don't know how long - I guess I removed the messenger from my weekly reading list about a week or so ago when I saw it...
To bad, but I'm guessing we'll see more and more of this with online media as they struggle to find a suitable revenue stream to replace what they've lost.
You would think they could afford to let us read it with as many ads around EVERYTHING on the site.
I'll continue to read this blog. Anything worth reading about that goes on in WIse County is on here anyway.
They just started doing it about a month ago, that I noticed..Sucks big time..What next BG, are you going to start charging too?

i have an idea lets all boycott the online section of the messenger and make sure that all of the advitisers know it when the ads go away then they will realize it was not nice to take it away and give it back to us free
I read the WCM last week and went to find the article online but it wasn't there.
Seems like a good way to sell papers. Dangle the carrot and see how bad we want the paper.
Although, this is not setting a green example... well, maybe US currency green.
The Editor they have is a joke and the paper has become a joke as well. Phil Major needs to wake up!
we only read it for the sports and they rarely even cover sports anymore, so no reason to pay for the paper online.

reading the 911 rewrites is not news. hell they dont even have to go and find those things, they are given to them by the PoPo. are reporters people that go out and find the good stuff we cant read anywhere else?
and they cherry pick the calls to the cops and only publish a small fraction, just the one's they think are amusing..never the really serious calls.
I wouldnt use that paper to litter the boat ramp at the Newark Beach!

OK but seriously- if the Mess lets us all read it for free online,which I admit, I've done for quite some time now, then how do you expect them to make their bills each month? After all, someone's got to report and write and shoot the photos. I would expect them to get paid, too, you know. Really???
anon 10:26 - the problem is they dont write stories, do investigative stories, cover sports or give us real news now and we pay them yearly for our subscription. maybe they should not have a fleet of wcm cars since they never show up at anything and save money there
