Random Wednesday Morning Thoughts

  • Is the recession finally breaking?: Yesterday GM, Ford, and locally based D.R. Horton reported last quarter profits for the first time in a long time.
  • On at least three occasions over the years I've heard radio talk show hosts refer to Jay Novacek as being less than pleasant off the field. But I've heard none of that over the last couple of days. Maybe he's a good guy after all.
  • House fires are disturbing to watch. It makes you feel like you are at a funeral.
  • Watched some of Lost last night. I've got friends that love it, but I think that show is downright silly.
  • I've got an episode of Modern Family recorded. Gonna give it a try.
  • Who would have thought Rick Perry would be trouncing Kay Bailey like he is doing?
  • A group of musicians re-recorded We Are The World to benefit Haiti? Why make the rest of us suffer through that song again?
  • 10 Sexiest Super Bowl Commercials of all time.
  • While you were sleeping: 20 killed in Iraq. Let freedom reign. (I know I harp on this all the time, but I was in the minority in the very beginning thinking the Iraqi war was a huge mistake.)
  • I've got a very close friend whose wife was diagnosed with breast cancer last month. And the initial diagnosis and treatment sounds excruciating -- mentally and physically. It's difficult to come up with the right words of comfort.

The opinion that the Iraq war was a mistake is still just an opinion.

Modern Family is the best written show in years. Enjoy.

"Is the recession finally breaking?" If the carbon tax goes through, food prices are going through the roof. Growing and transporting cattle and vegetables are energy intensive. Think the hungry you talked about yesterday can afford to pay more for food?

A hard rain is going to fall.

Anonymous said...

The recession is not breaking for many Wise Regional Hospital employees as massive layoffs are taking place.

Sometimes it's best not to say anything. Just being there for your friend means a lot.

Speaking of Iraq, when Prez Obama and First Lady Oprah paid me to vote 6 times, they said we would be out of Afgan AND Iraq LAST JULY!!!!!!!!!!!!

How much was the white guy paying his voters?

My check has bounced.

Modern Family - it's funnier if you understand the family connections:

Rich guy Jay is married to Columbian hottie Gloria. She has a 11 year old son (Manny) who seems about 30.

Rich guy Jay has a grown son (Mitchell) and grown daughter (Claire) from his 1st marriage to character played by Shelly Long in one episode.

Grown son Mitchell is gay & is in 5 year relationship with Cameron. Mitchell and Cameron have adopted a baby from Vietnam.

Grown daughter Claire is married to Phil & they have 3 kids.

So the 3 families featured are all related.

It's hilarious!

Modern Family is THE best show on tv right now.
If you can't find the right words for your friend and his wife, which is normal, then offer to do something for them instead. Bring dinner over one night, mow their lawn, babysit their kids, etc. They'll know what you mean.

Modern Family note - tall skinny dork guy looks like Coach of your Dallas Mavericks.

It's Letter of Intent Day, this is one of the best days of the year. But, it doesn't compare to the 2nd Monday of the Month, that's when Kay Bailey colors her hair.

I'd donate money just to not hear that song ever again.

8:48 is right about just being there to support a breast cancer patient.

One good way is to support the Breast Cancer site. Each "click" goes toward giving poor women an annual mammogram.

And the breast cancer runs? That just might involve BG.

Anonymous said...

I don't get all the hatred for Rick Perry.

The only argument I hear from the Dems/Libs is about his hair.

Boy, it takes brains to be a Dem or Lib. I'll give you that much. ;o)

You sound like a TV idiot sometimes. You can't drop into the middle of most shows, especially one as complex as Lost, and expect to get it.

Recession over? The food produced in the developed countries uses the equivalent of 930 gallons of gasoline a year to feed a family of four. Take a hard look at this number and do your own research if you doubt it. Take your food budget and run the price of 930 gallons of gasoline as a percentage. Would you like a carbon tax? Is Obama stupid or is he intentionally trying to destroy this country?

there are still some crazies out there who think this iraq/afgan war is warranted.

I agree about the war in Iraq was and is a huge mistake. I believe any time war is declared the draft should begin with very limited deferments. Maybe then war would be a little less appealing and only declared if it is really necessary and not political.

Only a liberal weenie would ask if the recession is breaking? Of course it is, because Obammy says so.

There are still some crazies out there who joined the military not understanding that they might have to fight in a war.

I don't think GM, Ford and DR Horton's profits are much more than the fruits of major cost cutting efforts. The economy is still in the tank, and will be until the unemployment rate drops down under 7.5%, which is unlikely given the impending inflation that we face. If Obama can deliver that before his term is up he will get re-elected, if not he is doomed.

Anonymous said...

The youth of military age do not have the music to bring the Iraq War to an end. Take a look at the song by Pete Seegar that forced an end to the Vietnam War. It will make you cry.

Two thots:
1. Has Kay Bailey been this stupid and/or incompetent all along or did it just hit her? How can anyone make Perry look good?
2. Has anyone else found "Men of a Certain Age"? I really enjoy these 3 guys and their efforts to survive modern life.

Anonymous said...

10:08 - Right on! In addition to drafting all levels of our citizens, I'd require congress to actually budget war costs. That means taxing us now for the costs - not just shoving the bill to our children.

I guess I should not give all the credit to Pete Seeger. Bob Dylan was also a force in ending the Vietnam War. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFtdjFoeNic

Wise Regional may have some issues, but the Cardiac Care Unit is EXCELLENT. Growing up in Decatur I would have never believed that we would have such a great facility or quality of doctors and nurses. My husband was in there in October and we could not have asked for better care.
The main problem is the ER and they way it is ran and the quality of doc's there. I understand this is all contracted out. Maybe the board needs to re-think that decision.

Iraq invasion/war IS a mistake. We had no reason, valid reason, to go there........

Having just gone through the experience of having a spouse diagnoised with and treated for cancer is something you cannot put into words.
The initial feeling of shock is unreal, then watching the effects of chemo and radiation is unbelievable. I hope no one else ever has to experience this again. Sadly, they will.

A question: What would the situation in Iraq and the rest of the Middle East be if Saddam Hussein were still in power? I'm interested in seeing some of the responses.

My opinion? Imagine Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on steroids.

Mr. Mike Honcho said...

IMHO the war in Iraq has proven to be a huge mistake. At the time the decisions were made to invade, I agreed with it, based on the evidence presented and misplaced belief that the war would be as "easy" as the first Gulf War.

I do not believe that the Bush administration falsified information or lied... it was just a huge breakdown of the intelligence system combined with hypersensitivity from 9/11.

I respect the fact that you have a blog and can trumpet the death total each night. I wouldn't do it, but different strokes for different folks.

Re:Gov. Perry... Education Failure. Not sure if KBH will do any better, but ready for someone else to take a crack at it.

Re: Jay Novacek... met him once at a local party. Seemed very nice to me. Not sure how many local media guys I would say that about.

LOST is an epic. Not a sitcom. And it is a fantastic epic.

11:56, it is working better than it would have with Sarah Crazy Palin. By the way, you are not very good at plagiarism. That bumper sticker was already printed when Obama finished his first quarter in office. You and your kind expect TOO much TOO soon. Without even contributing anything more than a NO on everything that he tries to do.
Hate to get ugly here but you and your ilk are a pathetic bunch of sore losers who want to take the ball and go home.

Anonymous said...

so with it being national signing day, did any of our wise county boys get to sign to go play ball in college?? anyone??

Anonymous said...

f you don't like our Hospital....take your whiney butts somewhere else! Try Bridgeport(Greedy, greedy, greedy)! , I'm sure the"Doctor" owned facility is better care! Plus, Decatur has some of the best docs and nurses I've ever seen. I'm sure there's bad bad experiences for some, but some people can never be happy or satisfied! Nothing's worse than a chronic bitcher!

Anonymous said...

12:25, Are you saying that Couric would have to take an ever bigger pay cut and more people would have lost their jobs at CBS News if Palin had been elected? That's a pretty weak attempt at defending Obammy. That's like saying Joe Biden is working hard at trying to revive the economy but he's only the VP. I still haven't seen a bumper sticker that says, "Ask Katie Couric how that hope and change is working." I'm still waiting on your annointed one to visit all 57 states.

Fact check: Obama never promised to be out of Afgan by July only Iraq.

It is a mess, but tucking tail doesn't seem like a long term strategy either.

I vote for more satalites and drones!

Senator Kerry has a valid point: who wants to be the parents of the last kid killed in Afgan.

Anonymous said...

12:25 You just keep believing that. I guess that's what helps you sleep at night. As a matter of fact, you get all the sleepy eye you need right now cuz in November you pathetic no brain Democraps and Libers will not be able to sleep!

wordkyle said...

108 - What exactly is Kerry's point? (Actual quote, John Kerry, 1971: "How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?") Was the point of the Iraq war a mistake? Only if you're willing to address what the situation for America and the world would be with Saddam Hussein still in power.

You want an answer to Kerry's question? Use a ouija board and ask the last soldier killed on June 6, 1944 during the Normandy invasion. 2500 dead Americans at the end of that day. No way that can be called anything other than a mistake, right?

I can tolerate (and have) a lot in my elected officials. One thing that I CANNOT take is arrogance. Mr. Perry has had that in spades since assuming the office. Not as State Rep, not as Ag Commissioner, not as Lieutenant Governor, but after he moved to the Governor's office - big head, big hair, big ego. He needs a big old bowl of humble IMHO.

PS - Best elected Texas public servant in last four decades - retired Senator Bill Ratliff. Never lost his common sense when he hit the Austin city limits.

wordkyle- You are comparing A battle in WWII to the Iraq mess?? I would think there is considerable difference in the two. I don't remember Saddam Hussein bombing Pearl Harbor. You and Dick Cheney need to understand that democracy can't be forced on people and should cease being Americas chief export.

wordkyle said...

203 - Your figures are off, but even so, if one's opinion is that the wars are necessary to protect America from terrorism, is every single government expenditure which led to the federal debt more important than that protection? What does your common sense tell you?

215 - At what point did Germany bomb Pearl Harbor?

Anonymous said...

War is war 2:15. Don't be such a dumbass.

2:03 so it's OK to spend millions trillions billions whatever has been spent on big business that should have failed and filed bankruptcy.

What's the difference?

And don't start the mumbo jumbo about military being killed. WA WA They shouldn't have joined the military if they didn't want to die.

12:49 FYI, Bridgeport's North Texas Community Hospital IS NOT "doctor owned" as you imply. It is a not for profit facility owned by institutional bondholders across the US. It is a 1st class healthcare facility which provides folks in this area a wonderful alternative to Wise Regional.

Wordkyle,

You are an idiot! To compare World War II with Bush's Iraq war is just studpid even for you.

And by the way, if you visit that Normandy cemetary you will get an erie feeling of just how great the cost.

An yes, some (notice I said some) of the cost that day was due to a mistake........late bombers needed to silence the German guns.

It wasn't however a mistake in the decision to go to war. If anything, we waited to long to enter it.

It's national signing day and our Wise county kids can not get signed for football because the schools don't have artificial turf. Have you not been keeping up!!!!!!!!

wordkyle said...

334 - Until you started with the insults, you had some valid points. I'm not saying you're correct, but at least it shows some logic.

Of course, take the nuclear threat that Iran poses, bump it up several notches, add in several years of distribution to terrorist groups (along with financing and other support,) embolden terrorists because of a nearly two-decade lack of American response, and you have a nice recipe for disaster with Saddam Hussein still in the picture. This is at least one likely scenario. There are others.

wordkyle said...

351 - Historians may have a higher opinion of Bush and Iraq in 65 years than you have now. Distance adds perspective.

Not to burst your bubble 11:46, but the cardiac unit at DCH is an express lane to the Funeral Home.

I went to DCH 3 years ago with chest pains. The wired me up, ran a bunch of tests, kept me overnight and sent me packing with a clean bill of health. To be safe I followed up with a cardiologist in FtWorth as soon as I could get in. It was a good thing I did because I had already suffered 1 heart attack and was on the verge of another with 2 arteries blocked. I was on the operating table less than an hour after I walked in his office for the first visit.

You need a top notch cardiologist that knows what he's doing go see Dr. Kanti Gandhi at North Hills Hospital.

NHH saved my life, DCH was going to let me die AND they screwed up my bill.

Barry, I'm 40 years old and have historically voted for Democrats all of my adult life. While there are no Repbulicans that have inspired a shift to the right for me, the Obama administration has scared the hell out of my husband and I. Obama and the current crop of Democrats reigning have created a scary and bleak future for those of us that have to work our asses off for what little we make and have children. I used to enjoy reading your blog but now I find myself annoyed after reading your political commentaries. You are out of touch with the masses. Your comments used to smack of a wealthy bachelor that wears rose-colored glasses; now, they are just self-righteous and ignorant.

wordkyle is again making up hypotheticals and presenting them as probables. But to answer his question about Germany and WWII - the USA declared war on Japan (Germany's) ally. Then Germany made the ultimately bad decision to declare war on the USA. That's what led up to the Normandy invasion. I'm also surprised that no one has defined the Cold War period. In fact the entire Viet Nam war was conducted during the Cold War and more than a few died there.

wordkyle said...

342 - Ahem, permit me to quote myself:

Wordkyle, 4:32 PM: "....This is at least one likely scenario. There are others." Not quite like I'm saying "This is definitely how it would have been," is it?

However, that is the assumption of anyone who, at this point, calls the Iraq war a "mistake." Someone with that point of view makes a definitive claim about how Iraq and the Middle East would have been under other circumstances. All any of us can do is make educated guesses which we have no way of validating.

(P.S. I don't think you told anyone anything new regarding Germany and D-Day. With the outrageous casualties, such a maneuver during the Iraq war would have been considered a catastrophe and a defeat that called for an immediate retreat, plus possible impeachement for the Commander in Chief. At least that's how Democrat leadership and the media would have characterized it.)
