For a reason bordering on insanity, I normally have Rush Limbaugh on in the background in my office. Did you know that he just said, "The Democrats are trying to destroy America!" Really. I was shock. Absolutely shocked.
Anyway, that's not the point of this post. When the news came on at the top of the hour, I heard a story about a new study on Hunger in America where a lady, in a sound bite, said "One in 8 Americans now suffers from hunger."
Whoa. I'm not sure I believe that. I can believe that 5 out of 8 Americans suffer from obesity, but I don't know about 1 out of 5 starving. That just sounds crazy. Even for a liberal weenie like me.
(I tried to Google the source of the study and the best I can come up with is this story that says 37 million Americans needed emergency food last year. That would be about 1 in 10 Americans which still sounds high.)

Hunger In America

There is a study that shows 91.7% of all statistics are made up and the remaining 13.2% don't add up. You can see the study here. There is another supporting article here.
It's likely the latest "Hunger Study" conducted by Feeding America. That just came out. While I don't dispute the study's findings, it reinforces how important the organization's work is, and how they need more money. That always gives such a study a whiff of a self-serving odor. But it does seem like a lot of hungry people.
I don't believe it either. Glad I live in America and glad I'm not hungry!
Continue your research dear
The DMN has a localized version of the story on its Web site: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/0202dnmetfoodbank.db320ea9.html
Hunger isn't a liberal or conservative problem. It's an American problem.
Hey Barry, I sent a pic of the Decatur house fire to your work email!
You're one of the few folks who work and listen to Rush.
Statistics like that depend largely on one's definition of "Americans".
Mmmmm. Hamburger...Mmmmm.
Double Fake

Barry loves Rush!
I might call you a liberal but Im not gonna call you a weenie.
There is a LOT of conservatalk that makes me say "Whoa, Im not sure I believe that" either.
We've ALL got to keep an open mind and listen for things that dont add up.
But I'll leave the pontificatin' up to you!

Of course Americans have refined the art of "playing the system" but if you worked at WARM or Spirit of Christmas, or the benevolence committee of a church, or taught at an elementary, you would be amazed at the number of people getting by on almost nothing......and I am positive they are hungry.
You can do your own survey. Look how many senior citizens are working the fast food places and I am positive they aren't there out of boredom.
I positive if we were to discontinue all forms of aid, welfare, homeless shelters, etc., the problem would go away. Survival of the fittest, some people are genetically engineered to fail and when they do we should let them suffer the ultimate consequences. If society had this attitude you would damn sure see a lot more determination from those so called "hungry" in America.
If 10-12 % of Americans qualify as "hungry", what percentage of those smoke and/or drink? Or are overweight? Hungry is a relative term, folks.
2:38-- If playing on a blog 7-10 hrs daily qualifies as "work", then your statement is accurate
We are so damn hungry that the dollar menu was created
Hunger is relative....visit a 3rd world country!
I'm hungry!
Contact Jan Pruitt at the North Texas Food Bank. This lady has devoted many years for the needy and hungry. She can give you the stats first hand.
(Our children went to high school together).
I have no doubt that there are many hungry people in America. Unfortunately, too many of those are poor children who cannot fend for themselves (you know some of those that might have been aborted by their useless parent if allowed). Second, we have far more obese and grossly obese citizens than hungry folks. I'm surprised to find very few children under 12 who are overweight. But adult Americans are clearly fatting themselves to death.
I have been on a diet since New Years day...I have lost 32 pounds. I am hungry. I wonder if I am included in the stats?
Americans as a whole are much more overweight than anywhere else I know of. That's just bad for them, our future and for the planet. If you're one of the fatties, QUIT eating so much!
