Serious Flashback

When I was a kid, I'd stay up late every weekend to watch rasslin' from the Sportitorium in Dallas. There were names like Fritz Von Erich, Killer Kowalski, and Yahoo McDanial (the resident Indian.) But in the obituary section of the Morning News today is a name I haven't thought about 30 years: Bronko Lubich. He was always the referee.

Great times for sure.

Remember when Fritz finally pulled the spoilers mask off?

He was not always the referee. Do not forget the greatness of hearing "Your referee tonite ... "Bulldog" Danny Fletchiss"

Peace Out and long live the Mongolian Heart Stomp

And Ivan Putsky - had my picture taken with him back in the early 70s

Saw Rick Flair at a convenience store in Ft. Worth this weekend (or at least it was an "old" look-a-like)

The Indian was "Wahoo" McDaniel.

Don't forget the Pride of Montague County - Johnny Mantel. And the Missing Link - used to ram his head in the turnbuckles. Wasn't there the One Man Gang - big fat guy?

You need to take a drive down "Fritz Lane" in Lake Dallas.

CF is correct, Bronko started off as part of a "Russian" tag-team combo. Can't remember the other guys name. Their big gag was Bronko had something sharp loaded in the toe of his boot. At the beginning of each match, they did this Keystone Cops routine when the ref tried to check his wrestling boots for "illegal" contents. Sometime during the match while the ref was being distracted by his partner(or an cue, take your pick) he would kick the mat a couple of times with his toe to "load" his boot, then he would kick his opponent in the head and cut him open. I think Fritz pulled it off of him in one match, and used the boot to cut Bronko on the head. Later in life, Bronko switched to refereeing.

Double Fake George "The Animal" Steel

PS A shout out to all my old friends - Freebirds with Michael Hayes, Terry Funk, Johnny Valentine, Jimmy "Superfly" Snooka, Mad Dog Vachone, Andre the Giant, Mils Masqueras, Ernie "Big Cat" Ladd, Adrian Adonis, Gov. Jesse "The Body" Ventura, Iron Sheik, Sargeant Slaughter, Ted DiBiase, Harley Race, Killer Karl Kox, Mr. Ito and Taru Tanaka

The reason people in Wise County make love doggy style is so they can both watch wrestling on TV.

And your official timekeeper, Dan Coates.

Red Basteen almost unmasked the Spoiler. Spoiler actually lived a few blocks from me when I was a kid, I went to a party there once, real name was Don.

I actually met Michael Von Erich at a Bridgeport/Lake Dallas game. It had to be 74-75 somewhere back then. Kerry was playing for Lake Dallas.

I was goofing off under the stands or something and met this guy doing the same thing. We hung out for a while then someone ran up and said Fritz Von Erich was at the concesson stand. The crowd went nuts. I turned to this guy I just met and said "Let's go get his autograph!" The guy said "Naa, that's no big deal. He's my Dad." I knew right then and there that I had just met my bestest friend ever. Wound up with Fritz giving me a ride home after the game in his Lincoln Mark IV.

Life has been a long slow downward spiral since that night.

5:10, that was FUNNY!
Ya'll have not mentioned Zebraman, or Crybaby, or (spelling?) Dukiemonga. I went to school with a kid that had pretty much every autograph by the names mentioned in this "Serious Flashback" post. Bulldog and Fritz had a deer lease at the Jackson Ranch near Chico one year, or maybe more. After hunting one morning, went in for coffee at El Chico Lodge and talked to Bulldog Danny for a while. Another time I was there when a young Fritz Von Erich family came in, and one of his kids started pointing to a picture Mr. McCloud had hanging on the wall of Fritz and saye "There's Dad!" It was a picture of Fritz holding his "Rassling Champ Gold Belt."

Remember "THE CLAW" and be afraid.

Actually, I think it was "The Iron Claw" that Fritz used to render his opponents helpless.

the good ole days when wrestling was entertaining and not a soap opera, in the mid to late 80's they did go around and wrestle at local high school's I lived in Keller at this time and Kevin and Kerry Von-Eric lived there also my mother worked doing alterations for the public more than once they were at my house I have even worn the famous white cape with the yellow rose on the back, I haven't thought about it much until now those were the good times every Friday and Saturday night at 10:00 pm the whole family would sit and watch wrestling and us kids would pretend to be our favorite wrestler.

Man, these are somne GOOD OL' flashbacks!

BTW, when I worked at the Mess a few years ago I interviewed Gentleman Chris Adams in connection with a wrestling show to be held at Bridgeport High School. He lived in Runaway Bay, and he agreed to follow me to my HOUSE! We talked for a long, long time while his young daughter played on our swingset in the front yard. He was completely friendly and we talked about allot of things. I'll never forget that...
BTW #2: I grew up watching all of the Funks from the panhandle (Umbarger, near Amarillo), and it was wonderful! Some other names from that are were Nick and Jerry Kozak, Cyclone Negro, Bull Ramos (Apache Gringo was his sidekick), Dick Murdoch, and others.
Whgen I was about 11 we moved to a bigger town and got cable, and I was introduceed to the D/FW wrestling. Man, those were GOOD times!
Thanks all, for the memories...

I remember working at the McDonald's in Decatur when I was a freshman back in the early eighties and that rassler, with the crazy hair, would come in, grab a bite and head out to the nudist colony between Decatur and Alvord. CRAZY

Too bad all but ONE of the Von Eric kids are now dead. (I believe their real last name was Atkinson).
Michael, Kerry, Kevin, and who was the other? I think it is Kevin who is the only remaining son.

I always said that Atkinson diet would kill ya.
