Yeah, just like you thought Obama or Clinton would slaughter their Republican opponents in your little poll last week. That kinda fell off your radar screen without comment from you, didn't it? It just goes to show that, just like in the '04 presidential election, Democrats are good at creating "noise" that distracts us from the way most Americans really think. You say that the last election wasn't even close? But for a few disputed districts in Ohio or Florida, Kerry would now be president. When your Republican candidates' pandering and flip-flopping is understood by the general electorate, the results will likely be a Democrat president and a much bigger margin in the congress. Wise Co will continue to be dark red, but remember that the rest of the country gets a vote, too.
Mz'edpoint, Where have you been? I've seen the results of all of Barry's polls. You can draw your own conclusions for the very unscientific results, but why chastise Barry for making an observation and expressing his own opinion?

This is actually a very important point that gets lost in the war "debate". You have a lot of people on one side saying "get out now" and then you have a lot of people on the other side saying we need to stay as long as it takes to "win".
"Get out now" I can understand. What I haven't been able to understand yet is what constitutes winning in this situation. As nearly as I can tell, we are fighting against a fractured, nebulous "enemy", with a number of distinctly different goals and motivations, who wear no uniforms, have no tangible bases of operation, and no identifiable leaders that we can kill, capture, negotiate with, or accept surrender from.
In this particular aspect at least, this conflict is worse than Vietnam. At least there we were fighting against one main group, whose goals were clear, and whose leaders we knew.
At this point it should be clear that Iraq, to the extent that it can be thought of as a single integrated concept, is not going to ever follow the plan we had for it -- that is, to adopt a workable, U.S.-style democratic form of government. If we could agree on this understanding (though probably we can't), I think we might all come to the conclusion that "winning" in any conventional sense is impossible. And IF we could come to that conclusion, we might could all start talking about revising our goals in a more realistic way.
But of course, if we did that, then we would actually have to engage in some deep analytical thought on the subject rather than screaming "warmonger" and "surrender monkey" at each other.

hhl: Winning in Iraq means finishing our permanent bases and staying until, under duress or not, the Iraqi parliament votes to give the big US oil companies 70% of the profits. I think this is stupid. Honestly. Because I'm one of the few anonymous bloggers who happens to not like MzChief's comments, I tend to get singled out. The nice thing about Barry's blog is that he has a lot of people who have diametrically opposed viewpoints.

Again, I don't feel that I have to defend the fact that I write a blog that mostly no one here (or anywhere, really) reads, and post daily comments on other people's blogs during my breaks and lunch. If MzChief actually had content on her site, I'd probably read it and comment because I like to hear the "other side," which is why I bother to peruse the comments on this site.
