Anyone else doing a double take today on the headline and the photo (which is unrelated to the headline)? And when the paper is folded in half - which is the way it appears to most the first time we see it - it will really stop you down.

I'm right there with ya! I was like man that guy needed to put down that camera and through that kid a line!!!
YES it did! I just saw it at the store, pointed it out and several other customers around me commented on the same. We wondered why the messenger would take and show a picture of a kid drowning instead to trying to save him.
12:53. Gee, thanks. I thought the clear pool water and the blue wall tiles were good clues that the picture might have been a kid in a pool, not a lake, but I wasn't sure until you confirmed it all for us. You're the best!!!
Every now and then (it seems like every couple of months), the messenger has an article about the awards they just won against similar competition.
If the messenger is winning then we really gotta see what some of these other papers are doing. You know it has to be some hilarious stuff and flat out stupid mistakes!
i dont think the messenger knew a kid would drown from our lake, i think its just a coincedence it happen that both of those were on the same page. if they kid had died in a car wreck, the story on top would had been about an accident and it would not be near was weird.
either way, above that fold is very funny stuff. i thought both stories were done well, but the placing of those two were tacky. i love my messenger, but they sure do some weird things.
4:44 it's obvious why the paper wins all those awards. the pictures front to back are amazing, they cover the big things that happen that the other papers in the county are too afraid to report on. i dont think today's paper will win an award because that front page was in poor taste. i did, however, notice that the guy they have that has to do all the sports for our 10 high schools (or however many we have), did the story on the drowning. he has a job i would never want. i dont know why he reported on that death, but kudos thats impressive to do that much for the paper - they must be very shorthanded or the subscriptions are down this month. speaking of the mess, last night at the boyd school board meeting they approved of the resignation of the a teacher who is the wife of the edtior at the messenger. is he leaving too?
It is our community's loss that Skip & Paula Nichols are moving to Washington to be closer to their kids & grandkids. Skip is one classy guy & he has done a great job at the Mess.
The Messenger has once again hit an all time low. I'll put this one right up there with Joe Duty taking a pic of the lady who lost her son in the accident in Bridgeport and the pic of the blood stained parking lot of the lady who was murdered at the Alvord truckstop. These people just want to stir the pot at other's expense. I've always wondered why they've won so many awards. AND I think most of Joe Duty's pictures are STUPID.
i agree with you, and thats why its funny to read some of these posts about how bout the paper is -- we are very lucky to have such a great paper. it could be worse, and be like the bridgeport or alvord paper.
Reminds me of the time The Nocona News did a story about Montague County's famous serial killer, Vicky Dawn Jackson, while the FBI was still in the "dig up the bodies" stage.
The headline mentioned the FBI digging up the bodies of potential victims at a local cemetery. If the paper was folded in the usual "leave it on the counter at the convenience store" state, right under the headline, it showed a bunch of Nocona public works good ole' boys standing up to their chests, with shovels in hand, in a water-filled-trench, trying to fix a broken water main.
At the very bottom of the paper was the picture of a hearse at the cemetery, that should have been where the other picture was.
I bought ten copies, and still haven't mailed one to Jay Leno yet. I was waiting 'til the trial was over, but since she chose no contest, I guess I could send a copy to him without worry that I would be tainting the jury pool.
8:18 - You must have something personal against Joe Duty. His pictures are "stupid"??? How can a picture be stupid? For whatever reasons, you're showing something more there than evaluating a picture - you're way too emotional.
I'm betting you're the same person that slammed him in a previous post. I've never known anyone (except here) that didn't recognize Joe's photography as something special. If he was an ordinary photographer, you wouldn't even notice his pictures as good or bad; they'd just be background & nothing more. We would never discuss the quality of his pictures.
And no, I don't know Joe well & I'm not related - I know him well enough to speak & that's about it. I'm just an admirer of his craft.
I must admit that Joe is a great photographer, it's just that he should have a little more compassion for victims families and friends!!! It's the WCM thats really sick for publishing them!!
The best thing the Mess had going for them was Nell Low who left after serving there over 10 years...they got lucky and picked her up at the County Clerks Office several months ago..at least when the Mess did something goofy like this, her smiling face and great attitude made all forgiven.
while comparing the two biggest papers in the county:
the bridgeport paper did not report the drowning victim, while the messenger did ... and the thing happened in bridgeport.
the reporters dont compare - one paper digs and researches and one just doesnt get to the facts.
this is just one of many examples while we are lucky to have the WCM.
***but the front page was a little much whoever designed that when page two could had been used for the swimming thing since that page had a different color photo on it
In the Bridgeport Index, the first line identifies the victim as a Hispanic male. Since when is racial derivation the most important item describing the person? Eventually we will probably find out the poor guy was an illegal immigrant living with other illegals. Or maybe not.
Gosh, what would we all do without critics!! It must be nice not to ever make a mistake! I'll admit I thought the picture was of the drowning victim, AT FIRST, but after reading it, I got over it! A mistake...move on!!
And, the Bridgeport Index accepts unsigned letters to the editor. At least they did several years ago when they let someone attack my character when she didn't agree with a decision I had made with my place of employment regarding her son. She was guilty of libel; I just didn't go forward with it, even though I know the paper is ultimately responsible for what they print. AND THEY LET THE DARN ANONYMOUS LETTER RUN!
skip is the second best thing to ever happen to that paper - the eaton's buying the darn thing was the best thing to happen. i just hope they go out and get another editor that has been around the block before. the only guys at that paper that have enough brass to replace him and take all the heat that paper recieves are mr. griffin and mr. morgan. goodluck in your new move skipper
The Wise County Messenger is a monumental waste of good trees. I realize it is a weekly paper but would it kill the editor to just once hold the dope/gossip to themselves until the facts are vetted and occasionally print a first-day story? The fact that a half-page photo of a child splashing in a swimming pool is featured above the fold on the FRONT page more than proves the paper is intended to be nothing more than a record of the mewling drivel of simpletons. More times than not the best part of the WCM is the insert.
As for Joe Duty's photos, the man has a gift that he clearly has crafted into a talent. Yep, I am snotty enough to like art, know art and collect art. Some of what Joe Duty shoots is art some of it is formulaic to such an extent that it is pedantic and prosaic. The photo of the child splashing in a pool is amusing it is not art nor is it appropriate for the FRONT page of a newspaper.
If Joe is reading this, I would like you to know; throughout the years, I have actually clipped and saved a few of your more outstanding shots. I have not even bothered to save WCM articles of my son. However, when I see your photos that are subpar I am actually disappointed and wonder; what was wrong and what did you intend to shoot and miss? I realize it is somewhat unfair to require perfection but your talent is at such a level that expecting perfection is not unreasonable. Keep up the good work. Without having the opportunity of discovering one of your outstanding photos I would have no reason and would not peruse the Wise County Messenger.
Yep, I just admitted to "reading" the WCM for the pictures. *;)
9:32 - last i checked, the paper comes out twice a week, which does not make it a weekly paper. so this explains your ignorance and why you only "read" the pictures ... because your knowledge limited and your education is no greater than slidell.
To 11:38... Thank you for catching my typo. You are correct, my statement should have read; "I realize it is a twice weekly paper..." One of these days I will proofread my comments PRIOR to posting.
As for where I obtained my education, you are mistaken. I am not a classmate of yours. Based upon your text and grammar you found Slidell's rigorous academic requirements too difficult to achieve and failed to graduate sixth grade. I certainly applaud your efforts at attempting to communicate. Hopefully with a few more decades of practice and further assistance from your grandchildren you will be able to write at the same level as that of a ninth grader.

Why is it when people from outside Wise County send a child to Wise County to visit relatives they seem to end up dead!
Yellow journalism at its finest.
*YiKeS*
Does the Wise County Messenger have an Editor or at the very least a proofreader?
YIKES! THEM BAASTARDS
That is NOT the picture of the kid drowning, FYI. Perhaps you should read the cutline below the picture of the kid jumping into the water...
Good lord.
This county is a hoot and it isn't even trying!! I love it!

Dear 12:53,
Well, duh.
Mzchfffff, How did you learn about God?
12:53
You must be from Chico because they just don't grow em that smart in Alvord or Decatur. Maybe the Messenger has a job for you too.
Every now and then (it seems like every couple of months), the messenger has an article about the awards they just won against similar competition.

GO JACKETS!!!!!
I've seen just about everything from the good ol Mess. It works tho. Has everybody talkin bout em.
It is our community's loss that Skip & Paula Nichols are moving to Washington to be closer to their kids & grandkids.

UGH!!
Skip wouldn't report the truth if it hit him in the face
I saw this at the store a bit ago - I thought "Did they preview the front page??"
They blew it on this one.
WSM wins all those awards and so forth. Hmmmmmm.
FOX must have some kinda ties to the Messenger with this kind of layout.

Hey 4:44, have you checked the competition 11 miles to the west? That ought to answer your questions?
And 8:18, Joe Duty's pictures are awesome, and he's a great guy. Get to know him before you knock 'em too hard.
And, no, I don't work for the Mess - never have, but I KNOW what the competition is!
Do I think they goofed on the front page - yep, sure do, but I still have faith in them!

What did ole Skip do down at the Messenger anyway?
all skip likes to do is report that bad and hide the good.
if he is leaving, tomorrow won't be soon enough

Joe Duty's photos are one-in-a-million, and so is he. Get to know him before you judge his book by its cover.
