Everyone Gets A Trophy. No One Is A Loser.

The 5A division of Texas high school football is sending FOUR teams from each district to the playoffs this year. Incredible. But as I was looking around trying to find the worst records of some 5A team that was headed to the playoffs, I came across a couple of 3A teams that should never, ever be in the playoffs with those records. That would be Andrews v. Levelland. And what's up with that Fort Stockton bye?

It's all about money. The UIL can make a ton of extra cash by adding that 4th team to each districts playoff selections. It's a whole extra week of games.

The reason Fort Stockton gets a bye in the first round is due to there not being a District 2 in 3A football. Only seven 3A schools play football in the Trans Pecos region, and the UIL didn't want to create a three team district, which would have made it impossible for those schools to put together a full 10 game schedule, so they created a seven team district in football in Dist. 1 and left Dist. 2 void. In basketball, however, three of the schools, who compete in Dist. 1 football, move to Dist. 2 where they join Presidio, a 3A school which doesn't play football. The situation isn't much better on the south Texas plains around Lubbock where only eight 3A schools play football and there are two four team districts. If you are familiar with the history of the region, you would know that the populations of most west Texas towns are dwindling at a rapid pace and has resulted in many former 3A schools dropping one, or in some cases, two classifications, or having to consolidate with another school, and if you look at the 3A schools that do exist in the region, many are former 4A's that have dropped down in class due to their own declining enrollments. Andrews, Fort Stockton, Pecos, Monahans, Lamesa, Sweetwater, Snyder, Canyon, Borger, Dumas and Kermit are just some that come to mind.

Reminds you of the time Decatur went 3-7 and made the playoffs because Boyd played an inelligable player. They went up to Vernon (BIG MISTAKE) and got their everloving arses handed to them on a silver platter in weather not fit for man or beast.

And then the Levelland/Andrews winner will move into the second round. The coach will get a big raise for doing so well in the playoffs. Maybe Henson could get hired out there so he could make the playoffs with 2 wins!

Excuse my ignorance, but does the UIL get some kind of financial reward for football games, or is it the individual schools? I do not know how that works. Bigcat can you tell me?

You have parents to thank for the everyone gets a trophy. Parents think their child's self esteem will be harmed if jr. doesn't get enough pats on the back or someone else gets more. What will happen to jr. when he is faced with "real life" and there is no one there to protect his precious self esteem. That is why there are 30 players on the all-district teams. Everyone gets to make it. So where is the honor??????

As someone who lives in Levelland and covers the team on a regular basis, I think you're a bit cynical about things. First of all, there isn't anyone around here who thinks the Lobos (Levelland) are God's gift to football. The team played a really tough schedule and did the best they could, but they just lost more than they won. And as the above post said about all the troubles with 3A schools, we were in one of those four-team districts. We had to win just one game against Brownfield in orer to make the playoffs.
However, none of this is the fault of the school, the football team or anyone else except the UIL. None of the coaches in these districts like the alignment - even if it means they can make the playoffs with a 2-8 record like ours. However, these teams are just playing the hands they were dealt. I can tell you, all of these coaches REALLY hated having to line up SEVEN non-district games.
Make sure you are directing your ire at someone besides the kids, coaches, school or town.

And remember, the year the Bulls went to the state semifinals, they were 5-5 at the end of the regular season...

As a matter of fact fuball, the UIL does get part of the take on every game in the playoffs. If my memory is correct, it is either 10% or 15% of the total gate. Same thing applies during the basketball playoffs as well. This is where the UIL gets the money to operate its office in Austin. As for the four team districts, I know that has to stink for the schools that are thrown into one of them and the difficulty in finding non-conference games, but the travel time needed to come up with six team districts in west Texas is unrealistic. To do it would require schools like Graham, Vernon and Burkburnett to have to join districts around Lubbock since they would be the closest 3A's to that area even though they are around 200 miles away. The sad part is, just think about how many former 3A schools there are in the region. Just around Wichita Falls alone, you can count Henrietta, Nocona, Electra, Seymour, Quanah, Jacksboro, Olney and Childress, and three of those, Electra, Seymour and Quanah, have fallen two classifications to 1A. In class 2A Region I, which doesn't include any of the WF area schools mentioned above other than Childress, the numbers increase. Altogether, there are at least 36 schools in region I that used to be 3A out of the 53 2A schools in the region. That's 68% of the schools, and it's only going to get worse. Can anyone name more than one or two schools in all of west Texas at any classification that has actually grown in enrollment in the past 20 years. Midland Greenwood, Canyon, Lubbock Cooper and Wolforth Friendship are about the only ones I can think of and they are all within 10 miles of Amarillo, Midland or Lubbock and have become bedroom communities for people that want to get out of the city, but still be close to their jobs.

I still think one of those west Texas schools needs coach Henson. Won't one of 'em make him an offer?
