Our legislators are geniuses. The two districts with exemplary campuses will be receiving "Robin Hood" money from the four newly "rich"/soon to be "rich" districts. Apparently more money is what is needed... wait, that doesn't makes sense. That's okay, neither did the first sentence.
As a Bridgeport taxpayer I'm not exactly excited about the district's unimpressive rating. However, I also realize that the rating system is heavily influenced by the amount of minorities and how much they have improved - not what they actually score. The rating system is stupid and our district is not very impressive.
I wish I could move, but nobody would buy this shithole. At least Chico Elementary is somewhat above educational flotsam, so I have a few years before it becomes bad.
Who am I kidding, I better start home-schooling now.
Please consider the info at www.standup.org it's about every child in this country having an equal opportunity for an equally good education, do our schools measure up to the best? I think not
umm, i think based on decatur's status, you should put these in alphabetical order!! that means alvord goes first...then, well you know the rest. at times like these i'm glad my child goes to alvord..just GLAD that i don't have a girl who will be coached by Enis in high school!!!
Rankings are more a reflection on parents than any other group. A kid in school that has his mom and dad at home, a nurturing family environment....not spoiled rotten but supportive and loving...and has been taught right from wrong; that's who's doing well. And other kids to their credit do well despite bad situations. But the school that do poorly overall are the ones with more kids that do not have the basic support system. And teachers are TIRED of having to deal with it. Give any professional teacher a class full of kids as described above, and you'll be exemplary. No question.
Let's see. Bush let the 2nd most liberal write the most expensive education bill in history and this is what you get. Can you finally admit that money is not the answer. School vouchers and personal responsibility and good parenting is the answer. It would also help to close the borders so that teachers would not have to spend valuable time teaching these illegals english while the other students play with their pencils.
Greta, I bet you just pissed off all the teachers. How would you like to teach 30 heathens that don't want to be in your classroom? The problem is bad parenting, the teaching curriculum, and having to deal with people that don't speak the language.
I love the liberal mindset. Let society raise the children. Parents have more important things to do. Kind of reminds me of the toilet paper book Hitlary put out called, "It takes a village".
It's funny how private schools turn out better students. Parents that care about their kids education and teachers that don't have to teach little idiots. Can you say school vouchers? Whey does the NEA not want competition? Why do democrats fight against school vouchers? Dumb down the kids and you create a democrat voting block.
From 1982 to 1996 ,students improved their achievement in mathematics and science as measured by the NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress.)
From 1983 to 1999, SAT scores increased during the 1990s From 1983 to 1999, ACT test scores are up.
From 1984 to 1997 the percentage of students taking Advanced Placement (AP) exams has nearly tripled.
US students receive more instructional time than students in the seven European countries.
From 1993 to 1997 overall school crime rate has decreased.
Public school teachers are better educated than private school teachers.
Since the early 1980s, many more students today are going college (53% to 67%).
Since early 1980s, more students completing a Bachelor’s degree (26% to %31%).
Since 1972, the number of women earning degrees has significantly increased (9% to 41%).
In 2000, Texas had higher average grade 4 mathematics scores than the rest of the nation according to 2000 report by National Science Foundation.
Texas scores big on 1999 TIMSS Math Assessment: Texas students scoring in top 10% internationally = 13% Texas students scoring in top quarter internationally = 37%
I am not saying that it is society who should raise children. We are talking about EDUCATION here. A teachers job is to educate.
I do agree children are heathens today. A parent cannot discipline their children anymore without getting CPS called on them. Children are running the home now days and that is wrong.
How has Decatur HS gone from Exemplary to Acceptable in sucha short time? Look at the teachers who have left/retired, look at the emphasis on PALS, BUDS, FOOTBALL, etc, etc, etc, and look how many hours a week the princiPAL spends away from the campus!
11:59 anon: The same fool who implemented the very educational programs that are causing our students to fail now. It takes several years for the deterioration to set in. The good results you are seeing in the NSF report are from dear, dear Ann.
Tx, You missed the point. It was Ted Kennedy that Bush let write the most expensive boon doggle education bill in history. There is your proof that the democrat plan doesn't work.
Ok, that was three. The ruling parties are the same because they are in power. Hold on a sec, I need to put on my tin foil hat to recieve my instructions from the muthra ship.
Its all blah, blah, blah.
What is the terror alert color today? How much is your dollar worth? What is the price of Halliburton stock? Who sold missle technology to the Chinese? Should Dallas blitz more on second down?
All important stuff. The bottom line is neither party really cares about you, they care about them. Rant over.
Kinphish, Color code is Yellow, the dollar is worth a dollar, Halliburton stock is 33.60, down $8 from it's 52 week high, Clinton sold missile technology to the Chicoms and nuclear technology to North Korea and Dallas should blitz more on third down.
AHEM! Though I am not trained to be and educator, twenty-one years ago while a Bridgeport High School teacher took an extended leave of absence I was asked to substitute teach at Bridgeport High School. I taught for 4 months and at that time came to the decision that no child of mine would ever attend a public school in Wise County. I home schooled my son for the entirety of his pre-university education. He scored a 1550 on the SAT with a breakdown of 800 verbal and 750 mathematics. He was offered free rides to 3 state universities and 1 private university. In all the years of home schooling my son I believe I spent no more than $6,000.00 for educational materials, including a $2,300.00 computer 7 years ago.
Throwing more money at education is NOT the answer. The way to assure that children are given an excellent education is to have excellent educators and truly involved parents working to provide the educational tools children need to succeed in the real world. The public education system within the United States is a JOKE! When you have coaches holding positions such as Principal, Vice-Principal and Superintendent there is NO hope for there to be any improvement of the educational quality of a district.
The sad part mzchief is that you didn't get a tax break either. I commend you for home schooling and there is no way I would send a child of mine to a public school either. Ever notice how many home schooled kids win spelling bees and geography bees?
Tx, I thought you ate your babies. Please post more pics of your tattooed daughter. Are you schooling her on lesbianism? How does the national debt affect your pathetic life? That was a great six point plan Pelosi and Reid came out with the other day. If that's all you have, Republicans will continue to control. Don't pout, there is always 08.
I love how homeschoolers comment on how well their children do on SAT and stuff like that. I also think its great when they are cheered on by others.
Because, you know, public schools don't really get to choose who they teach. Many parents don't have the resources(i.e. money, time, etc.) to home school. Private schools get to set their tuition which in turn allows them to choose who they get to teach.
Of course all this nonsense that MZCHIEF talks about with Athletics and such is true. But what do you expect from a public institution that has the "will of the people" pressed upon it.
For instance, imagine what would happen the day the Bridgeport or Decatur ISD Superintendent and School Board propose doing away with the Athletic program at those schools. How many voters...how many people...how many taxpayers would show up at the school board meeting threatening a lynching? and how many would show up cheering for the Supt. and Board?
Its just like the Decatur HS Open Campus Lunch issue. I have heard from so many people how they wished the lunch would be closed...but they didn't show up the night the district had their open forum. That is democracy. Listening to the will of the people.
All this being said, I believe we place way too much emphasis on athletics and particularly football. I believe Decatur High School should have a closed campus lunch.
But the reality of the situation is that there is an apathy among taxpayers and voters when it comes to these issues.
So, to sum up my point. Not all kids can be home schooled. Not all kids can be private schooled. Vouchers won't help Decatur ISD or Bridgeport ISD be any better because only a small percentage of students would ever take advantage of them and go off to Denton or Fort Worth to be schooled.
Public schools are public schools. They are run by the public. Considering all the crap they have to juggle between Athletics and Academics, I think Wise county schools have done a great job! Congratulations!
5;24 anon: I would love to see the end of athletics in public education. It has no place there! Athletics could and should be handled by another, separate agency like the YMCA or something.
I worked in a Wise County school and the waste of human potential and the waste of taxpayer’s money horrified me.
Public education has MANY serious problems that need to be addressed. However, we still need a public education system because, as you said, “Not all kids can be home schooled.” Private schools are no better. We need an educational system that functions more effectively and efficiently.
It is in our best interest as a society to have a well-educated populace.
Now watch Jimbo have an aneurism over that one. ; )
You just showed your true colors there Sharon Sheehan. You talked about all of the waste of taxpayers money. And who would be the ones wasting it? School board, suprintendents with open ended credit cards, and athletic programs. Yet somehow it's Bush's fault. Get your talking points in order before you start blaming the wrong person. Waste more, tax more. How's your daughter doing?
5:56 anonahole: Bu$h has so damn many faults that his disaster of NCLB that led to the deterioration of our public schools is just a small drop in the bucket. You have some kind of nerve mentioning waste of taxpayer money. What is it now…$400 Billion down the sink hole in Iraq where we never found any WMDs and where they had NOTHING to do with 911. WTF ever, Jimbo!
Hey Tweedle Dee, You're the one that brought up the waste of taxpayer money. You just can't place the blame in the right direction. WMD's are being found in Iraq but you wouldn't know it if you watch CNN(Clinton News Network). But what can you expect from someone that wears a tinfoil hat.
I'll tell y'all what is jacked up about the whole education thing:
We lag behind most other industrialized nations with our educational system, yet our president and all the other "family values" republicans would rather worry about a few queers getting married. The priorities are not in the right place.

These rankings are the report card for districts. Exemplary=A
Recognized=B and Acceptable=C
Does your child go to a school that has a report card you're proud of????
I'm putting the for sale sign out and moving. Been here a long time - culture ?? Wise County Reunion. Time to say "bye bye".

Texas children left behind...
Texas is #49 in verbal SAT scores in the nation.
Texas is #46 in average math SAT scores.
Texas is #36 in the nation in high school graduation rates.
Texas is #33 in the nation in teacher salaries.
Texas was the only state in the nation to cut average per pupil expenditures in fiscal year 2005, resulting in a ranking of #40 nationally.
Heck of a job by the "education prez."

It's teachers who are the problem - They're teaching skills suck.
Again, if you are passionate about what you do you will be the best.
