"When Northwest ISD leaders set their starting teacher salary at $44,159, they touched off a statewide bidding war for new teachers. The district north of Fort Worth set the bar high for the upcoming school year with what may be the state's highest salary for new teachers." (Dallas Morning News

Last year a qualified teacher tried to get a job in a Wise County school district; however, the teacher was not able to even get an interview. Why? Because the teacher lived out of town and no one knew the teacher personally! The teacher was lucky, she got a job in another school district making thousands of dollars more!
The same school district did not do so well after the test scores came back?
Decatur, Bridgeport and other school districts won't be able to hire the best teachers until they raise teacher's pay. Bridgeport ISD will need to consider applicants based on merit and not just consider teachers they know in the community.
Good for Northwest ISD... I guess since they built the big new football stadium; they can now raise teacher pay.
There is sometime more to the story !! One question that begs to be asked, Why does Northwest have to pay so much more then everyone else ?? Are they bragging about the tons of money they get from Alliance or are they that bad to work for ?? Just questions that beg to be asked.
Building a big new football stadium can be a very prudent decision, in the right situation. In Birdville ISD, for example, 3 high school teams use the one new stadium, which also has assembly space and fine arts space built into it. Three soccer teams use the stadium, as do three bands, track and other athletic teams. Throughout the year the stadium is leased for other events. And the Birdville ISD is able to host regional competitions; making revenue at the gate, not to mention the revenue from football games which helps pay for other school activites, not just athletic. One large, multi-purpose facility can replace multiple, outdated facilities that need mowing and maintenance. I do not have a child that plays football. I believe more in academics and the arts as the foundation for a kid. But I realize that football pays the bills for a lot of things that a school wants to do, and spending a few million on a stadium that generates savings and new revenue can be a smart move. There is NO reason that Bridgeport and Decatur ISD's couldn't get together and accomplish something. Or the two cities, for that matter. I know, blasphemy.
OMG who is this that thinks that Bridgeport and Decatur can do ANYTHING together....HA!!

I would still like to see the cash flow on a stadium like that. You could buy a lot of water, fertilizer and maintainence for what one of those $15 million stadiums cost (with interest)
I don't see it.
Maybe just maybe !!
Bridgeport, Chico, Alvord, Boyd and Paradise could build a new stadium and share it !!
Then Decatur would have a place to play there one annual playoff game !!
A few years ago Northwest put Fieldturf on their field for a cost of $945,000. The cost now would probably be about $500K or so.
Dick Bivins Stadioum in Amarillo went to the new Fieldturf for their football stadium, and their maintenance costs went from $75,000 (water, man hours, etc.) to just oiver $500. All the worker would have to do is pick up trash and drag a "horse blanket" over the field once a week.
The lifespan of the new turf is about 15-20 years, so the investment would pay for itself in about 10 years for another 10-plus years, right?
I just checked on Decaturs' website for their pay schedule and they don't hit $44,000 until they have been teaching for 18 years.
Wow!! $44K for a new teacher with a college degree. What do you suppose they pay a pipe jockey in the oil patch or one of those brilliant rock truck drivers? Who has a bigger impact on our society? If the teacher is qualified and dedicated to the job - they should be appropriately paid.
12:44, 12:25 here. Yes, the cash flow and net present values would be impacted significantly by the specific situation. In Birdville's case, the facilities they had were so inadequate compared to the new one, and plus with the three schools benefitting, the net new revenue for extra tickets, etc. made a big difference. Plus they can accommodate visitor crowds from Southlake Carroll, Denton Ryan, Keller and throngs of "new money". In Bridgeport and Decatur, and possibly Northwest, if there would not be a significant increase in attendance or use over what exists today, then might not make sense. Definitely case-by-case.
Hey, Bridgeport and Decatur COULD do things together if they wanted to. If Dallas and Fort Worth can get together to build a multi-billion dollar airport....
Danny, ask for us a raise at Bridgeport, you get everything you want! How about a little help for the rest of us.
Don't start the Danny bashing...please! My concern is deeper: Is it appropriate for a Bridgeport School Board member to post comments on a local sports/football website and even make comments about coaches? I DON'T THINK SO...WHAT DOES EVERYONE ELSE THINK?
I think you should stop being such a net nanny
Hey Anon 8:00, are you Mercy Me from that other place? lol
I know several Bridgeport teachers who probably should go to Northwest -- maybe they could learn to teach.
you asked for an opinion. no, i don't think a board member should be putting any info out in a chat room, fourm, blog whatever....
bad form!
First of all, I never have understood why a teacher's job is any different that any other job. There are more perks to being a teacher than with an average job. Teachers get the summer off! An average job doesn't get the summer off! We would all like to complain about what we make. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that a teacher will get paid according to the school district. Poorer, smaller school districts get paid less therefore, teachers are paid less. Quit bitching that teachers are not paid enough in their own district! This is wise County. If a teacher thinks that he/she isn't paid enough then get your qualifications together and move to a larger district. Same goes for an average job. Duh.
Anon 11:15
They pay more in Northwest because it's a bigger school and it makes more money. Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't Northwest carry Rhome, Newark, Southlake, Northlake, and probally a few other towns. Besides, have you driven around Northwest School District and seen all the new homes and business being built. Come on.....
so since teachers get a few weeks off in the summer, we should not worry about the quality of their teaching? This is our futures, our children we are talking about. EVERY school district should strive to attract the best teachers.
btw....southlake is in the caroll school district
Anon 11:52
Of course we should worry about the quality of teaching! I am not saying that. And, of course we should strive for better teachers!
When a person is passionate about what they do they are not worried about how much money they make. Money is not the issue. Giving the kids the best education possible is what's important.
Come on.... reality check. Do you honestly think that our small town schools have the funds to pay big bucks to teachers?
A teacher chooses his/her profession and then chooses where he/she wants to teach. They have the option to go anywhere in this world they want to. But.......for instance they choose Chico and then wants to complain because they don't make enough money. They know what they are getting into when they hire on.
All I can say is...... If they want more money, then they should have been a lawyer, right Barry?
Uh....reality check yourself. The various idiots I ran into at TWU all happened to be....drumroll please....Elementary Education Majors!
There are many highly intelligent people who would be more qualified to teach our children, yet they are drawn to careers that will actually pay them for the time they have spent in school, learning and training.
And since when do some school districts have more per kid than others? Last time I heard, the state determines that schools get a set dollar amount per student attending. That number is the same everywhere. Ever heard of the Robin Hood Plan? They take any extra you have if you are in a wealthy school district. It is up to the schools to decide how to budget that money. If they make poor decisions and waste money, then less is there to pay teachers.
You insinuate that we should stop "bitching" about low quality teachers because it is just the way it is. Why should we accept that? We should just lie down and let our children be taught by those that are less qualified just because we choose to not revere our teachers the way other cultures do? Maybe that is why some other cultures have higher average IQ scores. Japan blows us out of the water....then again, they put a bigger emphasis on education, and we should just quit "bitching" about it and accept it I guess.
