Random Wednesday Morning Thoughts

  • The Messenger's Sports Editor ran in the naked race at the Wildwood Bluebonnet Nudist Resort over the weekend and writes about it in today's paper. (But they forgot to include his byline at the beginning or ending of the story, but I'll do it for them: Richard Greene.)
  • But somehow he wrote the article, which wasn't bad, without describing the physical characteristics of anyone he saw.
  • Speaking of races, I thought Wise County was crazy but Kaufman County just took the cake: Some group wanted to do a "warrior run" this weekend (which sounds really funny), but the county got an injunction against the race since the promoter didn't obtain a permit under Texas' "mass gathering" law. And to make it even crazier: They issued an arrest warrant for the promoter for promoting such an event without a permit.
  • The new Arizona law requiring suspected illegals to "show me your papers" has a very Nazi ring to it.
  • But here's a funny cartoon depicting how cops will decide who they will detain.
  • The Ticket guy that posted "dirty Mexicans" on his own personal Twitter account was fired last night. For a station I love, that is hypocrisy of the highest level. There's a weird arrogance exhibited by the station over the last few years which might end up, in the long run, killing it.
  • That was a ton of grandstanding by the senate committee "investigating" Goldman Sachs yesterday.
  • This is really a product from Sears?
  • Vermont got a foot of snow yesterday.

You're late on that one Barry. Seth Meyers has already pointed out that the new AZ law is fascism.

Barry, you might be right about The Ticket, but I don't think so in this instance. I think they were just looking for a reason to fire Mike Bacsik. He was horrible.

I don't know why so many people have a problem with the AZ law! I love it! And I bet if you ask anyone from Mexico who is here LEGALLY (who has gone through all the hoops and red tape) they would agree that others need to do the same! Come on people! Illegals are called that for a reason! If you want to be here, then do it the right way!

Anonymous said...

We all have to "show our papers" in one way or another in today's society, what's the problem?

Anonymous said...

The immigration problem is probably unsolvable because Congress has dallied these past 15 years because their masters (corporations and small business owners) profited from the cheap labor............and of course we did too in yard service, construction cost etc. At any point, they could have made it illegal and punishable to hire them.

They might start with ammending the constitution so that just being born in country doesn't make you a citizen........thus doing away with the heartbreak of breaking up families when deported.

They might make work visas easier to get so there is little to gain by using a coyote to bring you over.

We might even make the military a much more prevalent entry to citizenship and kill to birds with one stone.

Not sure who wrote the "product review", but they need to go back to elementary English and start over! I'm thinking it's one of those written in another language and in the translation, it didn't quite come out correctly! Proofread, proofread, proofread!

I agree that stopping people on the street and asking for papers is not-a-good. But asking for identification when renting a house or apartment, or applying for a job does not strike me as anything but making sure that you are conducting business with a law-abiding individual. And if you discover that the person is an ILLEGAL alien, then the authorities should be notified, thus generating more business for defense attorneys.

Sears must be outsourcing the writing or proofreading of their ads to a non-English speaking country.

I'm so tired of all the crap being thrown out there about the law in AZ and the stupid protesting saying it's racism & nazism. Folks, all that happened was the state of AZ basically adopted the federal laws of immigration as law at the state level. Thus, making it a violation of state law, now, to be in AZ undocumented. Thus allowing state and local authorities (police, sheriff, DPS) to be able to inquire about ones legal status. Whereas, before an illegal coming into AZ was only breaking a federal law, but the damn feds haven't done anything about it forever. So, it's about time the states started taking matters into their own hands. I hope Perry has the nads to do the same thing.

Anonymous said...

An arrest warrant?! Really?? That sounds like a civil matter to me, but I'm not in the legal or law enforcement profession

How long did it take you to find that Sears product? Are you satisfied with your purchase?

It may have been grandstanding by the senate yesterday, but somebody's gotta hold the Wall St sharks accountable. The only problem is that politicians on the Hill don't have the credibility to point fingers at some other group and say they are irresponsible, shortsighted, or not looking out for the best interests of their clients/constituents
As a group, Congress has become a joke, but nobody is laughing. It's just a sad, sick joke

I am so proud of my governor, too, because he built such an awesome fence to keep ILLEGALS out. And he is doing everything in his power to keep the ILLEGALS from screwing up our economy. Our governor is the best! Go Rick Perry!

I got pulled over for a burned out tail light and had to show my drivers license and proof of insurance. The officer then called in and checked on my status. I guess he is a nazi. And the laws that permit an officer to do this is Nazism.

I think that maybe the Sears site was hacked. (unless you can verify your order, Barry) The spelling and grammar look like a potential virus email or the Nigerian scam.

Rep. Debbie Riddle of Tomball said she will push for the law in the January legislative session, according to Wednesday's editions of the San Antonio Express-News and Houston Chronicle.

Everyone entering (or re-entering) the United States, including American citizens, is required to "show his papers" (i.e., passport.) Legally entering, that is.

It's an argument weighing potential abuse by law enforcement agencies against a very clear and present danger in Arizona. What's nonsense is absolutely ignoring a dangerous situation completely (i.e., the federal government's solution.)

How does the Mexican government handle illegal immigration in its own country? They detect it by asking for identification papers, and punish it through incarceration and deportation.

I am amazed they found 4-5 senators, that Goldman Sachs didnt own, so they would get a little tough with them. They do own Obama (1 Million in Campaign Donations) so expect Rahm the Hitman Emanuel to have them very much calmed down today.

8:40 There is a law on the books which allows for a $10,00.00 fine per occurence for knowingly hiring illegal aliens. The trouble is it's not enforced.

Okay, real world check & more personal info that Barry's blog world doesn't really need to know:

My dear departed grandmother was a native Texan, born at home in Jack County. Never drove. In her latter decades, closed her checking account and did cash only. Never registered to vote (it's a man duty). Darker than normal skin tone (Cherokee heritage). So shy around people of authority & power that she would lock down completely (not utter a word). So say we are pulled over in AZ in car in which she is a passenger. She only had a Social Security card, her marriage certificate, and a statement of live birth (not a traditional birth certificate), and her Medicare card, none of which she carried on her at any time for fear of losing. Any bets on a gung-ho deputy in rural AZ trying to curry favor with his boss by hauling in Nana to sort out her back story? Before you say it would never happen, re-read the law. Total discretion given the peace officer in interpretation, identification, and application. With this law in place in 2010, left un-modified, I would never drive Nana through AZ if she were alive today. We need to desperately fix immigration, but this law doesn't pass the smell test.

Again, your mentality is questionable

10:10 You are correct. Use of the terms 'Nazi' and 'Nazism', by proponents of all political stripes, has come to be a ruse intended to shut down, not encourage, rational discussion of issues.

I met Simon Wiesenthal once, in Vienna 1974, and think I have a fair grasp of what real Nazism is.

Arizona law is good for the citizens of the state and this country. Unfortunately it is also good for all the attorneys who will be lining up at the trough to start filing lawsuits. Barry you should move to AZ.

Wow, talk about a lack of respect:

The Messenger's Sports Editor ran in the naked race at the Bluebonnet Nudist Resort over the weekend and writes about it in today's paper.

In the article it specifically mentioned the race was at WILDWOOD. In your own blog last week you even showed a picture of the T-shirt the nice lady brought you that said WILDWOOD on it. I guess bringing in close to 500 people and thousands of dollars to the Decatur area isn't even worth getting our name right.

Talk about screwed up laws. A US citizen can be arrested, in Texas, for promoting an event that does not take place due to not having acquired a permit but a foreign national/alien who illegally entered, remained and worked in Texas cannot be arrested by TX law enforcement, for violating US federal immigration laws. Sounds like AZ has taken a step in the right direction to being able to LEGALLY enforce US immigration laws.

1. Travel to Argentina, Chile, Germany, France, Spain, England and/or Scotland and drive and while driving get pulled over for ahhh....uhhhh...ahhhh...let us say...going the wrong direction down a one way street/driving in an outdoor mall/failing to yield/running a yield light and you can bet your last dollar/peso/euro/pound that the officer will ask to see the driver's and passengers' passports and ask about the purpose and length of stay in their country and may even ask the name of your hotel. What can I say, Hubby and I have a propensity for driving infractions while visiting other countries. In Egypt, Kuwait, Pakistan, United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Turkey and Tunisia a random cop may walk up to you and ask if you are a visitor and ask to see your passport and visa and grill you about the purpose and length of your stay. This happens most frequently when you are off the well beaten tourist path. Why should ANY member of US law enforcement be denied the RIGHT to ascertain the legal statues of ANY foreign national/alien in the US and arrest an alien for violating US immigration laws?

2. It is absolute BS to blame employers for hiring illegal aliens. Believe it or not, in Texas, a prospective employer CANNOT ask an applicant if the identification information provided by the applicant is bogus. An employer CANNOT fire an employee for having provided bogus identification.

3. All of my French Jewish mother's grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins were murdered/exterminated, after the Nazis invaded France, and I can assure you, the recently passed law allowing Arizona law enforcement to LEGALLY address the issue of 400,000+ illegal aliens in Arizona does not come close to having "a very Nazi ring to it." Claiming the AZ illegal alien law is even remotely close to the atrocities committed by the Nazis is liberal hyperbolic rhetoric at its worse and absolute BULL SHIT.

mzchief- an employer can run a SS# and finds out if it is a bogus number. This absolutely grounds for dismissal and in fact the employer should contact AG's Office.
I worked for several construction companies that put out a weekly list telling us to have "Pedro" try another no. This is ABSOLUTELY Knowingly Hiring Illegal Aliens. A federal offense.

Goldman Sachs needs some adjustment. How did GS make a billion dollar profit while the rest of the large banks lost money? Because they cheat. They tell clients to buy while at the same time, GS is selling the very same security. Who can trust GS in the future? Wall Street is corrupt.

mzchief said...

To guinjames...
The current system that checks SS#s is only, according the the Feds, 70% accurate in identifying bogus SS information and incorrectly claims 20% of the time that correct information is a no-match.

Firing someone for providing bogus information is not a "with cause" reason to fire someone and will not keep them from being able to acquire unemployment compensation. Employers can and have been sued for wrongful termination for firing an employee who was incorrectly identified as a "no-match." The ONLY thing an employer can LEGALLY do when they receives a no-match letter from the SS Admin, informing the employer that there is an "inconsistency" with the employee information, is for the employer to pass the no-match letter to the employee and inform them to contact the SS Admin and clear up the problem.

Note, there is NO information provided by the SSA as to what the employer is to do to resolve the no-match issue with the employee.

Incidentally, the Texas State Attorney General has NOTHING to do with an individual attempting to fraudulently use a SS# for employment purposes.

To anonymous 1:58...
Here is the TRUE LUNACY of the situation with politicians attempting to blame employers for hiring illegal aliens....
The EEOC WILL file suit against employers who fire employees for LEGITIMATE no-match issues regarding the SS# the illegal alien provided the employer. The EEOC files suit claiming discrimination based on national origin.

"Some legal experts say firing workers based on no-match letters runs afoul of current law. Marielena HincapiƩ, program director at the National Immigration Law Center, said that because the final regulation has not been issued, employers who follow it could be sued for discrimination and unfair labor practices."

It did not take long but did take longer than I thought it would for a Texas lawmaker, to promise to push through the Texas Legislature a law similar to the one passed by AZ. Republican Rep. Debbie Riddle of Tomball claims she will introduce the measure in the January legislative session.

mzchief- I have worked for companies who were prosecuted by ICE for "knowingly hiring illegal aliens". After paying the $10,000.00 fine per occurence (as provided for in Federal Law) they quickly fired the rest of the emplyees that could not prove citizenship. Let me assure you this "broke them of sucking eggs".
I expect you have little knowledge of firing practices in the construction business.
I have also been asked to provide transportation for such employees and informed management I would not transport their questionable employees in that Federal Law provides for the confiscation of my vehicle for knowingly transporting illegal aliens for compensation.

Ahem...You assume much with FEW facts. My Mr. owns his own international engineering and construction firm that frequently hire US and foreign nationals for work within the US and foreign countries. I am well aware of what is entailed in the process of hiring/firing construction personnel, whether they be skilled or unskilled workers.

There is a VAST difference between a company that KNOWINGLY hires illegal aliens and one that inadvertently, due to false documents or seriously flawed means of verification, hires an illegal alien. My point was that employers are screwed if they fire employees who are illegal aliens and are screwed if the do not fire employees who are illegal aliens.

I notice all you have offered is your insignificant individual experience whereas I have provided VALID links to support my assertions. I do not doubt your claims but even you are capable of understanding that employers are damned if they do and damned if they don't when it comes to firing employees who are illegal aliens.
