This political cartoon will appear in this weekend's edition of the Wise County Messenger. I've always thought their political cartoons were a little odd for one of the most conservative counties in the nation, but this one is Jump The Shark crazy.
(If you've been out of the loop this week, Arizona passed a get-tough-on-immigration statute. The cartoon depicts the Arizona flag with the star portrayed as a Klansman.)

Between the comments posted on the People magazine cover story and this - I clearly see the ignorance I live among. Is there anyway possible to get the "fine" citizens of Wise County to update their calendars from 1963 to any time in the 2000s.
If I remember my social studies correctly that's the Arizona state flag. Do you think that some of readers of the Messenger even took social studies? Not really sure it's going to come across as intended. Oh sorry, was just reminded this is the "bible" belt, it will come across exactly as it was intended.
Man, what is the deal with your hatred of Wise County lately? It's obvious that you have some sort of personal insecurity. I just can't tell what is causing it...yet. But your insecurity is becoming more and more transparent as you project your anger toward Wise County residents and conservatives.
Hey 8:56...how do you know all those comments were made by Wise County people? Hypocrite, practice what you preach.
Get out of Wise County while you are still an ignorant liberal.
9:32.. this is 8:56, I stand corrected and you are right I do not know that the comments were made by Wise County people, for that I am sorry. However, I do believe that we don't need to use racist, ignorant terms to make our points. I also believe that every single one of us has the right to our own opinion even if I as an ignorant liberal doesn't agree with it.
I live and work in Wise County (though not originally from here as you've already guessed), I too am sick to death of my tax dollars paying for the illegals and having to select 1 for English. But I do not believe that encouraging hatred (and that is what's happening) is a way to solve anything and it just makes us all look ignorant.
So, please, I welcome your rebuttal...
Sorry, 10:07, for coming off strong. I don't agree with people using racist, ignorant terms either. I'm just getting tired of people (Barry Green included) stereotyping Wise County residents. Are there racist people that exist in Wise County (that include Whites, Hispanics, and Blacks)? Sure. But they exist everywhere...all over this country. Not only is there prejudice that exists in our country but having spent several summers in France with a good friend and her family, it exists there, too. My friend's family is extremely bigoted toward black people. I saw several incidents where hostility toward certain races occurred. So, race issues don't just exist in Wise County or the Southeast portion of the US, it's everywhere. Racism isn't always white on black/white on hispanic, either. And it is truly sad that such ignorant people abuse their First Amendment Right of Freedom of Expression to express such worthless opinions. But please know that there are many of us that reside in Wise County that subscribe to papers and periodicals such as the New York Times, The New Yorker, etc. for a more global perspective of things. So, just be careful about the sampling you take from Barry Green's blog. Look at the author, himself. His bias is so obvious, it almost falls off the computer screen when I read it.
Good Evening.
The Messenger is very liberal since new ownership took over. More liberal than when Skip Nichols was Editor! The newspaper needs some balance, more than just human interst stories. Tha cartoon is way, way out in left field; however, it matches the views of the owner/publisher, I guess or it wouldn't be in there!
Aren't political cartoons supposed to be entertaining or funny? The crime with this one isn't ignorance or racist. It's just not entertaining or funny.
They need to hire Chris Butler back.
i dont have a problem with the cartoon. What it says is the truth. I wish all of the illegals would get boarded on a train and sent back home. I'm sick of paying for them and all their freebies.
White Power
SEND ALL THE MEXICANS BACK!!!!
can anyone please help me find the association that helps in the advancement of white people..?
Arizona has to do something to keep the drug cartel from taking over the border state and to stop thousands from seeking protection from the drug dealers and murderers! Who will want to live there if they can't stop illegal immigration.
Perhaps someone needs to explain this to the folks at the Messenger.
Since when is it racist to attempt to identify people who are violating US laws? It is estimated that 56% of illegal aliens are foreign nationals of Mexico and an additional 22% of illegal aliens are from Central and South America thus, it makes perfect sense for law enforcement to focus their efforts, when attempting to identify illegal aliens, on people who appear to be from Mexico, Central and South America. If a blond haired, blue eyed white man robbed a bank, law enforcement would be ridiculed if they included Blacks, Asians, Hispanics and women in their search for the bank robber.
Focusing on Hispanics when attempting to identify illegal aliens is not racial profiling it is CRIMINAL profiling. Why are soooo many AMERICANS soooo unwilling to have law enforcement identify and deport illegal aliens?
With the mighty circulation of the WC Messenger, this will no doubt turn the tide of public opinion. Frankly, the Messenger needs all the help it can get...and they cannot help but be a bit liberal. Anyone who caters to any people who break the laws of this country is cutting their own liberal throat.
I LIKED THE SPEEDY GONZALEZ CARTOON BETTER THEN THIS ONE
