Two Issues Of Race

(1) A DWI trial just started in Wise County where the defendant is African American and, not surprisingly, there was not a single African American on the jury panel. (2) Former Jacksboro mayor Jerry Craft has just written a book about his experience being the only white player in the West Texas Colored League. Kind of a "reverse Jackie Robinson situation." (Thanks, Allen.)

I feel for the defendent in this case. Racism is a HUGE problem in Wise County. "To Kill A Mockingbird" - one of the greatest books and movies of all time.

This reminds me of when SMU switched from black horses to white horses back in the SWC football glory days.

Heck, I remember one season ol' 'Mustang' was black most of the season and then a white horse was used for the last two televised games.

not a raciest but I cringe when I see black people in wise county because I don't think they realize what they are getting themselves into

I feel for the defendent also, because even though it's totally wrong and color shouldn't enter into any decision, chances are good that it will. Not fair. Of course I'm the one who if sitting on a jury would be sympathetic to the defendent 9 out of 10 times anyway.

I don't get the whole African-American thing. Shouldn't whites be referred to as European-Americans by this criteria.

If you demand African Americans...(people who have never been to Africa) be on juries if the defendent is black...should white defendents only have white jurors or Asians only have Asians...or Hispanics only have hispanics? What is the correct mix? Who decides?

If I get in trouble can I count on Danish Americans to be on my jury?

One of the all-time greatest truths uttered in a movie.

"If you just learn a single trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view. Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it." - Atticus Finch

Words to live by.

There aren't that many black people in Wise County.

Can I have a Scotch/Irish American jury? No? Good, they would probably hang me anyway. :-)

I want people who like Banjo's on my Jury...I mean, if I ever get into trouble or somethin.

If you have a predominately African American jury it will always be hung.

1:51 - you missed the point completely!!! No one said anything about having 100% of one race. That is ludicrous. There is not ONE black person on the jury.

Can anyone name the first Mexican American, Asian American, or Indian American to play in the major leagues?

Good luck trying to find a darkie who understands laws and stuff.

Basing "race" on continents...I am a North American-American. Does that need to be hyphenated?

I have NO doubt that any nigger can get a fair trial in Wise County. Just no reason they could not.

Does anyone remember back to the 1960's when the Southwest & Southeast Conference athletic teams wouldn't allow "colored" players - and wouldn't play teams who did. That wasn't that long ago. We've come a long way but there's certainly a great distance to go for a color blind society.

Atticus, Jim, Scout, Dill, Calpurnia, Tom Robinson........where are y'all? We need you!

Anonymous said...

"there was not a single African American on the jury panel."

What's your solution? Import them like Dubuque, Iowa did?

Anonymous said...

6:35, why do we need a color blind society. There are differences in the races and they should be seperated. If you look around, you will see that the white race has always been the leader in inovation, production and leadership. Even the Japanese only took our invention and produced it cheaply. Show me a society other than the white who are leaders at anything.

Good Lord! There's a negro sitting there in front of God and everybody. Isn't someone going to say something?

Your comment indicates there to be only ONE racist in Wise County. Are you sure that's accurate?

OR, the county sucks because you're illiterate?

I wonder if there is a secluded place in heaven for prejudice whites only? Oh yes never mind I think they call it hell. Hate will not inherit the kingdom.
