Random Friday Morning Thoughts

  • North Texas won a football game last night. North Texas! And looked good doing it.
  • I fear the lightening strike.
  • I had a conversation with a guy yesterday that wouldn't shut up. I tried a dozen times to wrap it on the phone but he kept going. It was one of those where I took the phone away from my ear and just stared at it about a foot from my face.
  • Traffic has been rerouted in Decatur because of some construction close to downtown which brings a lot of cars by my office. I asked my law partner is we could put a big purple inflatable gorilla on our roof.
  • Fox 4's Dan Godwin interviewing Mike Judge was kind of awkward. (And I'm not sure if the new movie "Extract" deserves to be associated in the same breath as "Office Space". Then again, I haven't seen it.)
  • Is it "I've said my peace" or "I've said my piece"?
  • If I see a young attorney's obituary in the Texas Bar Journal, I always try and find out how he died. Anybody know what happened to Stephen C. Ackley?
  • Texas Tech star Michael Crabtree is the only drafted player not to have signed an NFL contract. Idiot.
  • If Obama were to make a personal visit to Decatur ISD, would there be parents that would keep their kids home?
  • Observation from the Cowboys game last weekend: White people like the Jason Witten jersey.
  • After the Boise State/Oregon last night, a player threw one of the most violent sucker punches ever. Then he went into the stands. If that kid isn't suspended for a couple of games -- maybe more -- I'll be surprised. (I'll try to find the video.)
  • Obama's Approval to Disapproval rating is 55% to 39%. That's a landslide if it were election returns.

I retract my UNT statement from yesterday. I have no idea how they did it, but WTF!

White people like Jason Witten because he's um..you know...white. White people used to like Tony Romo until he got all sexed up by dummy Jessica Simpson. White people don't really like Jessica Simpson because she's well, and idiot. And it looks like she has way too many teeth in her mouth.

So, basically, it's a race thing.

Ok all you haters, bring it on.

What, no comments on the House and Senate approval ratings. Most presidents have a high approval rating in the beginning of their terms, I pray he can do a good enough job to keep it that high because that means the US is stable and confident.

Anonymous said...

Gallup is more than generous.

Check out Rasmussen:

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/obama_administration/daily_presidential_tracking_poll

27% strongly approve, 38% strongly disapprove.

From the link:

Overall, 48% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President's performance. Fifty-two percent (52%) now disapprove.

Keep it real.

Anonymous said...

Of course they would keep them at home!!! Go see a black man? Get real.

Anonymous said...

Yes, the more people really see of Obama, the more they disapprove! Without a track record, he looked good, didn't he? Now, another story................ And yes, people in Decatur would have kept their kids at home if Bush had come. That's the way it works!

Anonymous said...

Orbama's approval to disapproval rating...what the heck does that mean.

Means 55% approve and 39% disapprove? Or his approval rating has slipped from 55-39? I think the latter is more accurate.

Recent polls show his approval rating in the low 40's. Wow...he's slipped to 39% now? Must be that brilliant idea to address the nation's school children during class time.

BG,

Should have looked a bit further in the Gallup poll:

http://www.gallup.com/tagbox/Gallup%2bDaily.aspx

From Gallup:

President Obama’s average job approval rating fell to 56% for the seven-day period ending Sunday, from 59% the previous week -- the largest one week decline in approval of Obama seen thus far. Obama’s current three-day average, 54%, is the lowest of his administration.

Further from Gallup:

More Americans disapprove (49%) than approve (43%) of Barack Obama’s handling of healthcare policy, hardly changed from views expressed in mid-July. Americans are evenly divided on his handling of the economy and give him more positive than negative marks on foreign affairs and education.

It is, "I will give you a piece of my mind!" When you want someone to know how you feel about something. I don't think you would give them your entire mind.

Yet, "I want some peace of mind" refers to when you would like your mind to stop working so hard and be at rest occassionally.

There ya go!

I agree with 8:25. White folks like Witten because he's the best white player on the team. I don't see it as racist. Just because I chose the Witten jersey doesn't mean I hate Marion Barber, Demarcus Ware, etc.

Does anyone know what Abe Lincoln's approval rating were in the South when he was trying to abolish slavery? The point being, when a real leader is trying to do something that's in the best interests of the country, he can't worry about approval ratings. I think most Wise County folks would agree that ending slavery was good. If Obama will toughen up and pass real healthcare reform, he will be viewed favorably by future Wise County citizens. Just my 2 cents.

Piece

"I've said my piece" would connote, "I've said all I'm going to say, all I need to say" etc.

Peace denotes 'absence of conflict' and I think to make sense in this saying a LOT would have to be assumed for it to make sense and I don't think context would always help even.

Interestingly, search the two phrases separately on google "piece" comes out on top but, only barely at 99,000,000 and "peace" at 82,000,000.

I looked for historical context in writing without success but, I'm willing to bet it would be "piece" and "peace" is 'worming it's way in' like "nail" for "knell" which you've discussed before.

Decatur ISD made the same decision about the president's speech as HEB. What the heck was the Sec of Education or the White House thinking about when they scheduled the speech for 11:00 for Texas public schools? Kids start having lunch early and would be eating at that time. The speech should have been in the morning, before or after lunch.

Since the president has better things to do than visit DISD, it is a silly question only meant to get comments Bud Kennedy can beat us all over the head with and paint all us as racists, rednecks and backward people!

And who cares about some stupid poll anyway? The fact is his poll numbers are going down over his policies. He was a brillant campaigner but he just can;t lead or govern. That is very scary for our country.

chupacabra said...

From upenn.edu laguage log:"I'm wondering whether the idiom

"to hold one's peace"

leads people to assume that the opposite idiom should be

"to speak one's peace"

instead of the more correct "to speak one's piece"

Do people write: "I'm going to give him a peace of my mind" ? Most of the hits that show up for that are making a deliberate pun, like "just desserts" as a name of a pastry shop.

You would probably find an eggcorn for "holding one's piece" as well, if the confusion were working the other way around. Try to peace that one together. "

Obama approval rating depends on what poll you look at.

Rasmussen has it 47 percent approve, 53 percent disapprove, among "likely voters". Face it, people are jumping off the Obama band wagon like flees jumping off a dead dog.

I'd love to see the results if the election were held today. Consider this: Obama won by only 7 points against a second-rate Republican candidate, with a dispirited Conservative electorate who had been unrepresented in Washington for several years. Obama won by being vague and making grandiose promises. Today Obama seems to be a second-rate politician who breaks promises and who wants to advance his big government (statist, if you prefer) agenda. Oh yes, I'd looooove to see what would happen if the election were held now that the public knows Obama (and his intentions) better.

9:23, I doubt we would change our beliefs based on the opinions of others, but TIME will certainly change beliefs, when the final outcome of this regime is further loss of personal freedoms.

you might also note, that what you were attributing yesterday to Wise County's ignorance in wanting to show the stupid indoctrination speech, it is now also NOT being shown by Plano, Southlake, Denton, etc. The list goes on and on...may end up not being shown anywhere, which would really be a riot!

The tragic thing about opinion polls on the president or congress is that the results go right down party lines. If he's/they’re your party, you approve. If he's/they're the other party you disapprove. If you ask the respondent to actually back up their opinion with reasoned facts - they draw a blank or parrot their party’s line.

Most Americans are woefully ignorant of the FACTS of any situation. And our democracy is the worse for this ignorance.

What planet DO these people come from. (All credit to Barney for that one)

mzchief said...

To Barry...
The correct word is PIECE as in, "part." "I've said my piece." has nothing to do with the "peace" meaning "tranquility" mentioned in the phrase; "if anyone knows of any reason why these two should not be joined in holy matrimony, may he speak now or forever hold his peace." in some marriage ceremonies.

Hubby, who is white and from OK, so dislikes Witten he threw away the 8 free reusable Witten grocery sacks Albertson's, near Trophy Club, gave us when they were forced to use them after they ran out of plastic grocery sacks earlier in the day. Hubby asked if Albertson's had something else to put our groceries in, the clerk said; "We have tons of these, no one wants them." I guess that means not all white folks like Witten or allow race to influence their choice of football heroes.

There will always be the 30% of the Loony Leftist Liberals who have crawled up Obama's .....nose and will believe everything The One does is nothing short of manna from God but the more details the thinking public gets about the CHANGE Obama, his crew of czars and the Imperial Congress want to force on taxpayers the more Independents turn their back on the schemes dreamed up to create an Obama-Nation.

But I believe the last unemployment rate under Bush was only 4.8%. You may have heard, it is higher now. Like double that.

Neither he, nor the democrat Congress, did anything about out of control lending practices, which caused the housing bubble, and started the trouble.

Hi Mzchief. The fact that you admit to marrying someone from Oklahoma shows that your decision making ability is shaky at best.

However, I'll admit that 30% of the US will support Obama unconditionally ("the loony leftist liberals"). There is an equal percentage of the country that supported George W without question ("the retarded right-wing rat-farts"). I assume you belong to the latter group from previous posts. I use to belong to the former. Not anymore, but not for the reasons you would have.

Membership in either group is wrong. All leaders regardless of party should be constantly scrutinized by opponents and supporters alike. We pledge allegiance to the flag (and to the republic for which it stands). Never put your allegiance in an elected official, or else prepare to get screwed.
