Random Wednesday Morning Thoughts

  • There was a lady call into KLIF this morning who had been a teenage mother and "grew up in Bridgeport." She said the only sex education she had was "that film they showed us in sixth grade." I know what you're talking about, sista.
  • I had no idea that the new starting quarterback for Alabama, Greg McElroy, played one incredible year for Southlake Carroll.
  • Since redesigned, the Star-Telegram's web site doesn't seem to be updated as often.
  • A Fall movie I'm interested in: The Invention of Lying which stars and was written by the great Ricky Gervais. It also has Tina Fey in it.
  • Romo's new girlfriend. (I'm certain I profiled her about a month ago but can't find the link anywhere.)
  • You would think even her biggest fans would get tired of Oprah. She is an immediate power down for me.
  • PeopleOfWalmart.com
  • Today's Messenger has almost no coverage of this weekend's Wise County high school football games. I don't know what happened with Robert Morgan (and I won't let you speculate), but they are struggling over there in the sports department.
  • KFed, who was able to defeat me in my quest to be Mr. Britney Spears, is huge. Not like in "huge star" but just "huge."
  • I would think even Fox News fans don't believe it's "Fair and Balanced." It's simply news presented from the conservative perspective. Why lie about it?
  • My jogging routine changes but I've been going with the outside/early morning routine. And by "early morning", I mean "still dark." But I've got the oddest experience working: Every time, about two miles away, I meet a guy walking the opposite direction. And although I meet him at the same location every time and wave, he never responds.

Too bad you think so little of Oprah, considering her influence and generosity.

Watch out BG - she may tag you for one of her shows.

Would you turn THAT down?

To Barry...
You are over 40 and jogging before God and the sun is up, the guy knows you are crazy so of course he does not respond to your wave.

Will you admit that the other networks are not "fair and balanced"? I am thankful that I at least have a choice not to have to watch the media that is bias in the other direction. This way each one of us can watch what we want. I have not turned on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, etc. in eight years. I understand they don't have too many viewers.

By the way, following the election of Obama the words "weapons of mass destruction" disappeared from the English language. Also, I have not seen Cindy Shehan mentioned since the first of the year. I saw on Fox that she was at Martha's Vineyard demonstrating against Obama's war. Why was she so much news when Bush was President and not now?

I like FOX. It reminds me of Paradise where all the girls are pretty.

Anonymous said...

Until two years ago I seldom watched Fox News until the presidential primary. Fox News was more fair and balanced in reporting the Democratic Primary than CNN and MSNBC! That was a turning point.

Fox News has liberal pundits but they are the only ones brave enough to report on S.T.O.R.M. (Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement"! Why is that important? Because one of the liberation leaders is one of Obama's advisors heading up Green Jobs in the White House.

How many can ignore this like they ignored Obama's crazy pastor "black Liberation theology? It is to do away with evil capitalism.

Fox News is conservative in reporting and what does that say about all the other news networks in not reporting what is really going on. That is what really scares me when the head of the FCC is another crazy.

Oprah has taken a big hit with her fan base when she went with Obama over Hillary. Race over sister hood cost her fans, including me.

i think fox is fair and balanced. your just so used to the extreme left on the other networks that is seems more conservative.

Facts News gives you just that. The facts, along with direct, sourced quotes or audio or video.

The other networks report things without backing them up. Much of it couched as information everyone should already know.

They give Obama hours of free time to present his ideas, and then will not even allow the other side to BUY minutes of advertising time. Sad.

Facts News reports Obama's ideas, but then allows debate about the ideas.

And yes, Facts News does cover both sides of every issue. The Libs always have a chance to respond. It just becomes sad when the Libs usually cannot respond to the facts presented.

I'm all for people having their own opinions, but why does it seem like every person that mentions "change" in their comment has a stupid little line to go with it? "The inevitable march of change?" Wow. Is their an inevitable march of ignorance as well? You should start one.

1) Oprah puts out a significant amount of misinformation on her show...several of the guests have been bogus...not to mention the weird new age religion that she has make up.

2) I heard Robert Morgan lost so much weight that he disappeared.

fake Walter Cronkite said...

There are a number of good comments above re: Fox News, I'll add a couple: Fox 1)includes a liberal viewpoint much more often than the others include a conservative viewpoint; 2)provides a much clearer demarcation line when moving from-or-to editorial comment and journalistic reporting. I watch the others occasionally just to see what they're talking about, but the obvious distortions they present destroys their credibility.

Anonymous said...

Oprah has increasingly shown her racial tendencies, which has turned many (myself among them)off. I used to like and respect her, but now she's one of the worst racists I've ever witnessed.

As for the absence of sports coverage, that'll be less paper I'll have to throw away prior to brining the Mess into the house, as that's what happens to the "sports" section at my house....trashed before opening.

How the hell do liberals have a chance to give their view of anything when Sean Hannity can't shut his mouth long enough to let anybody talk....Whatever!!! Boy there sure are a lot of Rightie nutjobs on the blog today. Why don't all you guys just go watch Sean or Rush, or that idiot Glenn Beck and leave us intelligent liberals alone. At least we can spot corruption when it stares us in the face and see bias when the Network in question has so many hate mongering pundits that I have been disgusted at times by the lies that go unchecked on that station.
In my opinion Faux news has no more credibility than Nixon who was "not a crook" or George Bush who now admits, 5000 someodd American deaths later as well as over a trillion dollars that there might not have been weapons of mass destruction.
That being said, I applaud BGs random thoughts this morning. Much better than the 2 skanks he put on yesterday.

Denney Crane said...

When looking at the overall picture of "fair and balanced" news media in America, I don't see fair or balanced at all.

So when you want to rag Fox about being fair and balanced, you're welcome to set the example and talk about MSNBC's biased reporting.

I've noticed, as in this morning, when politicians don't stay on subject or lie, they call them on it; something very few other networks attempt.

You wonder why Fox's ratings are so high? People are tired of listening to bullshit, plain and simple. One reason you watch and listen to them as well.

Strange. i have the same experience about 43 miles into my morning jog.

10:13 - your memory is wrong.

The person on Oprah Winfrey's show was not Barry Green - it was Patrick Morris, who was the District Attorney for Wise County at the time of the Ricky Lee Green trial.

Come on, there isn't an attorney or public official in Wise County who would turn down a chance for such notariety, if Oprah's producers called for them to make an appearance.

Barry would probably break a leg running to the airport.

I've found C-Span I and C-Span II to be the most fair and balanced. Those who have the time can tune in on live proceedings in the House and Senate (a lot of that is pure BS) and partisan, but it IS live)...

C-Span is currently doing interviews with doctors, technicians, administrators, financial folks, ER doctors, ICU administrators, and others...... and asking very good pertinent questions of these folks about the health care reform situation.

Folks can go to C-Span.org and scroll to health care to get these interviews.

Amazingly, most of these folks are quite READY for health care reform. They are NOT politically motivated - just coming from the realities of being involved on a daily basis with folks who are insured, un-insured and Medicare recipients.

It's totally worth viewing, and whether we agree or disagree with these viewpoints, we can at least hear perspectives from folks in the medical fields and better educate ourselves as to how to address these issues with our own personal healthcare professionals.

In response to the lady having only a film in 6th grade for sex education. The problem is only going to increase because the State of Texas has deemed health class unnecessary and students are no longer required to have any health classes (except for thos with that on their current degree plan).
So sex education in any way is out and imagine what kids will do if they receive no guidance good or bad. I hope parents are really talking to their kids about these issues.
Just saw on the news today that teen pregnancy is up again in Texas.
It's a good thing that teachers are so limited in what they can teach (TAKS) that we can disregard all other areas of education. (in my best sarcastic tone)
We all know that what we do as adults was taught to us in Math, Science, history and English. Right?

Anonymous said...

This is what the liberal media is good at. They find doctors, technicians, administrators, financial folks, ER doctors, and ICU administrators who agree with them and put them on the air. They want to give the impression that everyone in these professional groups agree with the proposed socialization of the American medical system. Some of us did not just fall off a turnip truck down in Georgia.

11:29- the interviews on C-Span did NOT reflect a unified view on health care reform. Many of those folks disagreed with some aspects of it and gave those reasons.

I do not want a liberal OR conservative view. I want MY view and have it based upon hearing both sides.

One of the things that came forth from these interviews was the HUGE need for medical professionals to have electronic record keeping. I've sat in waiting rooms and seen very very sick patients filling out an inch stack of paperwork before they could see the doctor. That is stupid when at the flick of the mouse, that information could be collected by a PCP and sent on down the line to others.

My doctor brings his medical laptop into the office and can check immediately my records for comparisons.

"outfoxed" is a great documentary on Fox News. It really pulls back the curtain on how republican talking points get pushed from the top (Rupert Murdock?) down to the on-air folks.

All mainstream media is nothing more than corporate-owned entertainment shows. They exist primarily for producing revenue through advertising dollars. In the old days, network news was expected to lose money. Not anymore.

For real independent news, I encourage you to watch Amy Goodman of Democracy now. Our fellow Texan Bill Moyers is excellent on PBS. Glenn Greenwalds's blog on Salon.com is an absolute necessity. And finally, libertarian Scott Horton with AntiWar.com is great. The first three lean left, but will slam the democrats without mercy when the facts warrant it. Good day to all!

From The UK Telegraph: Doctors in the UK are being forced to speed up the dying process.

Experts who care for the terminally ill claim that some patients are being wrongly judged as close to death and guidance introduced across England alow fluid and drugs withdrawn. Many are then put on continuous sedation until they die

The experts say this approach can mask the signs that a patient's condition is improving.

Sounds like Obama's program. England has wonderful health care. Right?

Go take a tour of a VA hospital sometime. Or even better, go over to Bridgeport to the nursing home on the west side on a Saturday or Sunday and visit some residents; look around while you're there and see how government funding purely from Medicare and Medicaid really works... then you tell me about government run health care.

Anonymous said...

"I would think even Fox News fans don't believe it's "Fair and Balanced." It's simply news presented from the conservative perspective. Why lie about it?"

You've become so desensitized to the liberal drivel delivered by the drive by, MSM, that anything presented with less than an all-out liberal slant appears conservative. Fox News is still slightly left of center in their reporting - you merely perceive it as conservative because it is in such stark contrast to the truly liberal left media you've seen since the Viet Nam war and uncle Walter.

Anonymous said...

I have never toured a VA Hospital, but would like to. I have, however, given countless hours to local nursing homes in community service and found most of the residents clean and as happy as they can be with the numerous health concerns.

So, Denney, just what would YOU do with an elderly relative if you could not afford personal/private care?

My children are raising their children. I've told them to put me in the nursing home when I can't do for myself anymore. This would be best for them and for me.

We don't have the money for private care and our kids don't either. What else could we do?

Denney Crane said...

6:31 AM,

I applaud your countless hours of community service in local nursing homes. God bless you for making a difference.

Things have changed tremendously in the last several years. Please take 30 minutes this weekend and visit the nursing home on West Side in Bport. Afterwards, I will be glad to listen to you tell me how well the system works. I'm not asking you to do anything I haven't already done.

Please keep in mind that what I share below are my choices and opinions. I don't judge or condemn anyone's choices and opinions if they differ from mine.

You ask, "What else could we do?". I have no idea what you can do, but I can bring my parent(s) into my home and care for them until God takes them home; unless it is medically impossible. Even though they never asked me, I will make whatever sacrifice necessary not to make an institution responsible for their welfare; this includes my in-laws.

My family and I have already taken care of one elderly family member until God called them home. I will do the same with my remaining parent, in my home if necessary or medically possible.

My parents brought me into this world, nurtured and raised me, worked and sacrificed for my education and were responsible for allowing me the opportunity for a successful career. As the parent/child relationship reverses, the least I can do is do is take care of them when they become unable to care for themselves.

Please keep in mind that I'm not talking about an assisted living, retirement home.

Anonymous said...

Denney, I appreciate that you can and do want to bring your elderly parent into your home when that time comes. This is the way it was done before nursing homes came in.

Yes, the nursing home on west side isn't so hot. I was forced to put my dear mother there in the mid eighties because Trinity didn't exist and all homes in Decatur were full. The west side home was really bad in those days and I was incapable of caring for her needs that were numerous health concerns.

Things are better there today and in all nursing situations. Many elderly advocates work diligently to keep a careful watch and families are more intensive to check on loved ones.

You sound like a really caring man. What a blessing that you can and will care for your remaining parent at home.

I care too, but just cannot physically, emotionally and financially care for a loved one at home.

And were it not for Medicare, my dear mother's life savings which were meager would have been spent for nursing care in her last years.

This is the story for millions of Americans and the elderly among us are concerned that Medicare will be tampered with. Hopefully not. Without it, I would be ruined too. But that is another story.

Thanks for sharing yours.

The N. Koreans today advised the UN that they are ready to move forward with the final steps to produce weapons-grade plutonium. They further advised that they would talk more, but not if any sanctions were applied.

Many criticized the Bush administration for pursuing the "hard line" with N. Korea. Think the Obama admin can sweet talk the North Koreans before some city in a neighboring country is vaporized just to make a statement? You do not "negotiate" with a mad dog---you shoot it. Failure of this admin to enact a surgical military strike now to destroy the N. Korean nuclear capability will go down as one of the most costly and monumental foreign policy blunders in the history of mankind.
