When George Bush took over in January, 2001 (with a Republican Congress,) the national average price of a gallon of gasoline was $1.45.

At the end of November, 2006 (when Democrats took over control of Congress,) The average price of gasoline was $2.22 -- an increase of 77 cents, or 53%. (Annual average increase of about thirteen cents)

The average price on June 2 was $3.93, an increase of $1.71, or 77% in the 18 months since the Democrats took control. (Annual average increase of about $1.14 a gallon.)

Why has the price of gasoline gone up so dramatically since the Democrats took control of Congress? For almost five years, with a Republican Congress, the price rose, but slowly, despite the onset of a war. In contrast, with the same President but a different Congress, prices have shot up. If one wanted to place blame, wouldn't you start with the single most significant factor that changed?

Data here.

The government should step in and declare war on those countries that produce oil. Might as well, we are already at war for the wrong reasons.

And Bush's "Cult of Personality" failed when he went begging to the Saudis for more oil. HAHAHAHAH

Has anybody noticed that Grandy's is gone?

CAN YOU PROVE IT IN A COURT OF LAW? said...

Just returned from Maui where I paid $4.43 a gallon. If you want to blame anyone...blame a tree hugger. We've got the oil just not the refineries to process. It takes 10 years to build a plant but the danged tree huggers have prevented the companies from building. We have plenty of oil so dont blame Bush.

Luckily Grandy's is still open in Boyd and still using the sacred grease from Decatur.

Mmmmm, tastes like 1999!

re: canyouproveitinacourtoflaw

It takes 10 years if Brown & Root is the contractor. 18 months if anyone else does the job.

Bush is not to blame. Bush is the doormat for everyones feet to wipe off the war (which everyone wanted after 9/11), gas prices (which is supply and demand get rid of your SUV or truck that gets 11 mpg), and the Cuban Missle Crisis (had to throw that in for shock value, good morning to ya). Please, it takes many to tango.

And hey 9:10, at least he is trying, he is a lame duck for goodness sake. He is on the way out, he could just say WTF all my oil buddies are banking let it go. However, he tried and the Gas Nazi said no soup for you. So, back up off Bush.

I bought a Kia (38 mpg) two years ago. People made fun of me for buying a Kia.

No one makes fun of me anymore. Funny how that works.

What is the Bushs' background? Oil?
Why would they want to cut their own throat......dah

9:51, you are full of it. Refineries ate running under capacity because of the efficiency upgrades that have been done. Quit spouting old talking points.

This is the best thing that could have happened. People won't change because it is the right thing to do. Now we see the death of the SUV and less miles driven all in one month.

wasnt it John Kerry and Al Gore who said in congress back in the 90's that gas should be around 5 bucks a gallon to help save some owl or some snail darter shit. looks like they got what they want

The days of $2.50 gas sure brings back some good memories now.

Anonymous said...

You people didn't listen. Hillary said that when she was coronated, that gas prices would come down.

The days of 29.9 cents a gallons sounds real good for us old timers

Wordbile & the rest of you Wise County Republican Puppets .... Lets talk about the morons quote ...

"Through Sheer force of personality, by creating enough political good will with oil producing nations they would increase their supply ...."

Huh ?????

This dumb ass has use HATED all over the Globe ... Shit I think even the Dahli Lamma or what ever his name is even hates him . Mother Teresa hates him too and she is dead!!!

Let me guess guys ... the whole world are left wing liberal weenies and they just dont understand him? Please ...please tell me the countries standing in line with American flags and pictures of Bush asking him to save the nation ... ROFL

The Congress makes the laws of the land, not President Bush. Laws are what affect gasoline prices. Laws prevent American companies from drilling off the Flordia Keys. But guess who is preparing to drill in that part of the world - the Chineese and Cubans. Does that make you understand how stupid the Congress is. Anyone know who in Congress sponcered the legislation that prevents Americans from going after that oil?

Awww... 10:59:

I'll make fun of you... HAHAHAAHA YOU DRIVE A FREAKING KIA???!!!

Who cares if it gets 38 mpg? My Suburban looks cooler and has one of them GPS thingys in it and all kinds of gadgets that I never use like heated seats (in Texas?) and many, many other buttons and switches. Plus, the gas tank on it is so big that I can't even fill it up anymore because most gas pumps won't go over $100!

Who's laughing now, huh Kia boy???

Wait...

Suburban for sale. Motivated seller.

Since I'm just a cavewoman, your capitalistic world scares and confuses me, but come on you dolts! Get a clue.

The rising price of gas these days is the result of: futures trading, on the New York Mercantile Exchange and global markets. As for the Nymex, think greedy, conniving stock traders, or better yet, just watch "Wall Street" or "The Boiler Room" to get a taste of the kinds of sleazy bastards who contribute to the high cost of gas at the pump. And don't forget Grandma. Since Al Gore invented the Internet, lots of little old Grandma's are trading commodities and futures like never before.

And I'm pretty sure when certain "potentially catastrophic" things, such as a tropical storm forming in the Gulf Coast, or anywhere in the world, that "might turn in to a hurricane", that then "might damage off-shore oil platforms or sink oil tankers" occurs, it causes the futures prices to go up, among a bazillion other worthless excuses. Remember back in April, when oil prices rose $2.46 in one day based on reports a ship under contract to the Defense Department fired warning shots at two boats in the Persian Gulf that may have been Iranian, and then the Navy said, "Well, we're not sure what happened? I bet you don't, but oil prices rose $2.46 a barrel that day. Oh, and let's not forget the sleazy bastard who drove the price of oil to $100 just so he could be the one to do it! That's just implorable.

Shiate, futures prices probably rise every time your Aunt Ethel cuts her thumb while slicing pork bellies to make bacon. And, the price of pork bellies probably plummeted on the commodities market because she cut her thumb.

And, I'm pretty sure that the "fortunate ones" who have investments, 401ks, pensions and the likes are being invested in oil and gas companies. If not, you should probably be pissed, and quit your bitching about the high price of gas.

Then, toss in the weak US Dollar. I'll let Wordbile and Jarlip fill you in on those reasons, but in the mean time, think budget deficits (can you say Iraq War?) and trade deficits.

About the only thing you and I, the little people, can do is reduce our gasoline consumption....lower demand should equate to lower prices, but somehow, I'm not sure we will see that outcome. I believe the greedy ones are taking all they can get before the next POTUS takes office.

In suburban Chicago, we're at $4.25 while the city is closer to $4.50. Why is the midwest the highest? Makes no sense. Maybe shipping costs? But all the corn comes from here for the ethanol we add to all IL gas. WTF?

Ya'll member that secret classified meeting Cheney had with all the oil companies, and was asked what did they discuss? Cheny replied with a pretty much "none of you damned business."
Well, we now see the business end of this meeting.

Glad Word got that all cleared up. The reason gas prices are so high is that Democrats made it so. Yea, that makes sense. It has got people in Europe talking about how high petrol is in the USA. Now I understand, it is all the Democrat's fault because they love to oppress the citizens and cause them undo hardships, because they are the mean spirited party and Republicans are "Compassinate" and love filled. Conservative's always work for the "regular working American" and Democrats do everything they can to hurt the Blue Collars. Conservative's encourage the wealthy to share with the poor, whether from tax derived help, or direct "adopting a poor family" program. Jesus loves those Sweet Republicans. Jesus really loves George W. Bush and his followers. Reminds Him of Himself. But of course, Jesus does not want W. to be nailed to a cross. However, maybe a burning Bush.....might be... well, it is up to GOD!

1136 - In your fit of pique you stumbled into the truth. Democrats do have a policy to enslave blue-collar, middle class Americans. It's called "depend on the government." Through their policies, Democrats take away citizens' sense of self-reliance, responsibility, independence, initiative and self-esteem. They have rendered fathers unnecessary - thus the growth in single mothers on welfare since Democrats implemented the seven trillion dollar "War on Poverty." Winnng that, are we?

Every time Democrats want to reduce our take-home pay, they hurt blue-collar, middle class workers.

Liberal Democrats measure success by how many people the government "helps."

Conservatives measure success by how many people don't need government help. That's why McCain is having trouble with Conservatives -- he's campaigning as a Liberal Lite.
