This dress is actually a design that is part of our American history. The design dates back to the 1840's and was developed by a wealthy plantation owner and his wife for their slaves. The females slaves were made to wear this dress while working in the fields so they could not hide watermelons underneath their clothing and pretend they were pregnant! This practice of sneaking watermelons nearly devastated the watermelon crops in some areas of the south until this dress design was made widely available! By the late 1840's watermelon theft had been nearly stamped out!
Her family must have been considered watermelon stealers from way back. Otherwise, why in the world would someone want to wear that in modern day. Good Lord.
